Searching for Shadows

Rate this book
She’s trapped by fear.

Veronica Martens once soared boldly through life as an Air Force pilot until a brutal assault shattered her spirit. Now, she’s a prisoner in her own home, paralyzed by agoraphobia and haunted by the ghosts of her past. She’s lost her wings, independence, and will to live.

He thrives on terror.

Horror writer Connelly Davis needs to recharge his creative batteries. So when Veronica’s father asks him to bring her back from her self-imposed exile, he packs up his laptop and leaves the city for Steam Valley, California–the home of his most famous monster, The Shadow Stalker. Surely, he’ll find inspiration in the mist-shrouded redwoods as he helps his childhood best friend.

A dog who has known nothing but fear.

Despite Veronica’s reluctance to see him, Connelly is determined to rescue the unbreakable girl he once knew–the girl he secretly loved. He bands together with Redwood Coast Rescue and their newest troubled K9, Rebel, to help Veronica find her strength again. But there’s just one problem—Veronica never wants to leave her house, and Rebel refuses to stay put.

As Connelly fights writer’s block, he delves deeper into the mysteries surrounding the town and discovers a chilling connection between a string of recent murders and his newest book. And if real life continues to follow fiction, Veronica will be the killer’s next target…

Will they emerge from the shadows, or will darkness consume them all?

Searching for Shadows is the fifth book in the Redwood Coast Rescue romantic suspense series by Tonya Burrows, but can be enjoyed as a standalone. If you’re a fan of slow-burn friends-to-lovers romance mixed with heart-racing suspense and the unwavering loyalty of a K9 protector, you won’t want to miss this gripping addition to the series.

Say hello to your new book boyfriend: Connelly Davis.

Connelly is one of my favorite heroes that I've written to date. He's just so sweet and patient. He's a little nerdy but can turn into a badass when it's called for. I'm sure you all will adore him as much as I do!

Phobias

I learned more names for phobias than I can remember from this book. I believe that phobias are a small part of every person. I'm glad that Vee and Connelly had each other.

Searching For Shadows was phenomenal. I tore through the book. I couldn’t turn pages fast enough. Tonya Burrows did an amazing job with the fifth book in the Redwood Coast Rescue series. I love this group of vets that have come together to help with rescues of people and dogs. Veronica and Connelly get their second chance romance, and the search for the Shadow Stalker continues. Veronica’s past trauma has turned her life into one driven by fear. The therapy group was helping, but she can’t leave the house to go. Connelly has always been there for her, but she is pushing him away. Can he finally convince her to give him a chance? Connelly is a horror writer, and that plays a big part in this book’s rollercoaster ride of a plot. The twists and turns were awesome. I didn’t see the end coming. I could not put this book down. I missed some sleep, but it was worth it. You could read this book by itself, but it is so much better as a whole series. You want to read the whole thing! I can’t wait for the next book!!!

Was she even there? Connelly leaned his head against the door. "You don't have to face your fears alone, Veronica. Let us in. Let us help you."
Silence stretched on, punctuated only by Rebel's questioning whine and the soft rustling of rain on leaves.

Connelly Davis won't give up on Veronica. She's been his best friend since they were kids. Yes, he wants their relationship to be more. Most of all, he wants her to be unafraid to leave her house. He wants her to be able to live again. Her trauma is killing her. He wants to save her.

Veronica doesn't want to be saved. Living inside of her own brain, the sadness, depression, fear - it's all she has known for a while now. She used to be brave and daring. Those days are gone. She misses her friendship with Connelly, but still can't overcome what she has been through.

The Shadow Stalker is out there. He is feeding off of fears and can't wait to bring fear to Veronica and Connelly.

What an amazing book and 5 stars all the way! I devoured every page. I recommend getting cosy and ready to settle into one amazing read! Once started you won’t want to put this book down.

This series is getting better and better, the more we read about the Redwood Coast rescue the more I love them.m all. Connelly and Veronica made my heart melt, they so deserved to find their way to one another. Veronica was so strong and I love that Connelly saw this and showed Veronica to believe in herself. Veronica was one tough woman, I loved her. Rebel was a great addition and well done Zac for knowing this.

Along this journey of healing was the underlying mystery of the shadow stalker. This story has been building and had me hooked! So intriguing and exciting. I’m also hoping that we have found Sawyer’s future partner? I loved his role in this book. I can’t wait though for Cal and Ellie’s story next. Overall a brilliant book with suspense, friendship and healing.

Let’s not forget about Rebel! I want this dog for myself.

All in all, I was reading this book on the edge of my seat. I couldn’t put it down, until I was finished. The mystery, the suspense of this story gotten me very excited for the next book in these series!

I knew when I started reading Veronica's story that I would love it! I adore Connelly and love that he never gave up on his Vee. They have been friends since they were kids. Veronica is so strong and has been through so much and it weighs so heavily on her. She pushes Conn away so much but thankfully he is persistent. Rebel and Alfie get her through some of her fears without her even realizing it! The amazing power of dogs! I can't say enough good things about this series. Katie Reus is a master at romantic suspense. This is honestly such a great story, and I love the ongoing story that has been going on for a few of them but this story really gets into that and we finally get that all wrapped up. Can't wait for the next!! Bring it on Katie!!

This author knows how to churn out a page-turner! She successfully threw me a couple of unexpected swerves in this romantic suspense. I love when you read a book and think you have it all figured out and then learn you weren’t as smart as you thought! This book had a great storyline and the right mix of romance sprinkled in. While it can be read and enjoyed as a stand alone - I have binged read these in order…..it has been fantastic!

“We all have things we’re afraid of. Your fear is valid, but it can’t be the only thing that defines you. You’re stronger than that. You survived something horrific, and you’re still here. That’s a testament to your strength and resilience.”

Intense, action-packed, and seat gripping suspense!
Searching for Shadows is the fifth book in the Redwood Coast Rescue series. Each book can be read as a standalone but once you read one, you will want to read them all. They are just that good! I really love this series and always look forward to the next book. We met Veronica at the beginning of the series, but she was always in the background, and I was very curious about her story. Connelly didn’t show up until recently, but he was a mystery also. I could not wait to discover their connection to one another.
“We’ve been dancing around each other for too long. So it’s a risk I’m willing to take because the alternative is so much worse. The thought of never having you, never knowing what we could be... that scares me more than anything else.”

After a brutal assault, previous Air Force Pilot Veronica Martens is haunted by the memories. Eventually, her agoraphobia keeps her from even attending therapy until her childhood friend Connelly shows up.
Horror writer Connelly Davis’s writer's block is keeping him from drafting his next book. So, staying in the small town where Veronica, the woman he loves, will provide him with a change in scenery. When he realizes there is a connection between his books and a serial killer, he works together with Veronica’s friends, the Redwood Coast Rescue to find the killer. Can they find the killer before Veronica becomes the next victim?
I loved how patient Con was, he never gave up on helping Veronica no matter how many times she pushed him away. It was wonderful to see Veronica finally overcoming her fears and being part of the Redwood Coast Rescue family again.
I was hooked from the beginning of the book, and I could not put it down until I finished it. The suspense kept me reading and I never suspected who the Shadow Stalker was. I have enjoyed reading the series; in fact, I have read the books many times. I cannot wait for the next book which is Cal and Ellie’s. Theirs should be explosive with all the sparks they have been having between them.
I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I really enjoy this series. It is usually hard for me to follow the same people throughout a series over 5 or 6 books before I start to burn out or lose interest. I like that these pick up the story going on in the town as it moves through different couples so you see the events through a different perspective. Even though it is fiction it is moving to see wounded warriors of all kinds find some peace after such devastating trauma has almost destroyed them both physically and mentally. I cannot wait for the next book.

This series keeps getting better and better! It’s an emotional, suspenseful and romantic read!
Awesome strong characters and the plot is very well written and suspenseful!
I really loved how Connely with help from Rebel tried to help Veronica get over her traumatic past. And at the same time protect her from the shadow stalker!
I don’t want to give away spoilers so you have to read it and find out how the story develops. You won’t regret it!!
I can’t wait to read the next book in this fabulous series!!

Love and redemption

A lovely story of love, redemption and perseverance. Vee and Connolly have known each other since childhood. They are both strong and accomplished, but Vee was broken by trauma and rape. Connolly comes back to her with love and a determination to see her recover and rejoin the world. He and the gang from Redwood Coast Rescue all get Involved and the story gets tense. I enjoyed it.

OMG, this series!

Searching for Shadows is Veronica and Connelly's book--we saw both of them earlier in the series--and theirs is a former best friends who had a falling out, learned to trust each other again (which was mostly Vee letting Connelly back in) and then (finally!) became *more* story.

And I was here for it!

Seeing things from Veronica's POV at the beginning is rough--she had already been through so much, and then not only was her therapist, one of the few people she truly trusted, brutally killed but she also believed her longtime best friend had betrayed her to make a buck--honestly, it hurt me to read it. Connelly, Rebel, and Alfie had a long road ahead of them to gain her trust, but they all persevered and OMG it was worth it in the end. Seeing her able to take control of her life back and help save the day in the end? So. Good.

I absolutely love all the characters in this series--the men, the women, and their dogs are just all *chef's kiss* amazing. Once again, you don't have to have read the earlier series books to appreciate Veronica and Connelly's story, but in order to really follow the "Shadow Stalker" drama you really should. Plus, every single MC and secondary character in this series rocks--so just do yourself a favor and start with book 1!

I cannot wait for Ellie and Cal's story--up next!

Reclaiming their freedom

My heart breaks for both Veronica and Connelly, both are trapped in a hell created by others. Veronica is crippled by fear and the memories of the trauma she suffered at the hands of others, of those she should have been able to trust. Not only does she relive the trauma every second, but after the betrayal of the Air Force she struggles to trust....anyone. Including Connelly. Her fears are palpable, debilitating and devastating, caging her within her house, but only she can break free.
Connelly's battles are out of his hands, he is stuck watching the woman he loves, being crushed by her trauma, hiding in the shadows and becoming a shell of herself, he is more than willing to help and support her through her recovery...but he cannot do anything until she is ready to accept his help. He is in limbo, waiting, tentatively pushing before being shut out time and again, his heart cracking a little more each time.
Emotionally charged but rewarding, Veronica fights to reclaim her life and they finally solve so many of the cold cases that have haunted the area, but solving them shakes the town at it's roots.
A fantastic read on Kindle Unlimited.

Veronica has been trapped for years by fear and the trauma she sustained by her sexual assault by men she thought were her friends. She came to Redwood Coast Rescue to heal and try to reclaim her life. But what she found was so much more.
Connelly moved to be closer to his best friend Veronica and to help in her recovery. He was also hoping to fix his writers block on his next thriller story but he also found so much more. With the Shadow Mountain Killer closing in on his next victim, everyone pitches in to catch the killer.
This was a major page turner for me and I have to admit I was shocked to find out the identity of the killer or killers.
Rebel stole my heart along with little Alfie.
Tonya Burrows writing was fantastic, when reading Veronica's panic attacks if felt like I was experiencing them myself. Can't wait for Cal and Ellie's story next!

I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. Veronica and Connelly go way back but drifted apart a long time ago. Painful pasts have each of them dealing with their own trauma, trying to fit into society but still always struggling. A great story that is wonderfully told, lots of surprises you never saw coming and of course many hints to future books in the series. Fabulous!

Great story

Veronica and Connelly’s story is truly a great love story of patience and love as Veronica fights her demons and a killer coming after her. Lots of twists and turns before you reach the HEA. This story can stand on its own but it’s richer if you read the previous books in the series and learn the “family” dynamics. Looking forward to the next book.

Kept me guessing to the end.

The 5th book of the Coast Rescue series, while it's a romantic suspense the suspense part was creepily perfect. Just enough but not too much.
Great installment for Veronica and Connelly. Love their story and looking forward to the next one because you know if there is a next book, what we think could be over isn't!

Oh this was fabulous! It was really interesting to learn more about Veronica and really what she had to suffer is so unfair , i hate that she was punished for being a victim and regret that those can't be punished, go in prison etc . then it's in the past.

Veronica is suffering and closing on herself even more since loosing her trusted psychologist who was murdered. But Connelly is not giving up on her...he wants to rescue his childhood friend he always loved in secret and for that he is asking the help of the redwood rescue to find her the perfect dog and what a surprise when Rebel a gorgeous very stubborn and independant doberman is selected as such. Together man and dog will do their best to protect Veronica and bring her out of her shell...despite the danger lurking around....

I loved how Connelly was willing to do everything in his power despite being told to get lost again and again he never gave up on her and he is so great for her, so patient and courageous as well.
Rebel was too funny, she sure was the perfect match and i was glad she could find her humans she deserves it as much as Veronica deserve happiness again

The tension and suspense were great, lot of very steamy scenes and action as well as funny, romantic and moving moments.
it can be read as a stand alone but this series is so great that i can't recommend it enough to read in order the tension is going up with each book and persistant characters who want to put the truth under the spotlight.
It's always a pleasure to see the other characters come together and i can't wait for Cal story ( and Sawyer^^)

to be recommended without any doubt

We all know Veronica from the previous books, who has been traumatized for years because of an incident during her Air Force days. After the death of her counsellor, she’s retreated into herself even more, not leaving her cottage and trapped in her head. Connelly is her best friend, or was her best friend until that fateful night and moves to Redwood to be closer to her. He doesn’t know how to help her, she refuses to see him and he desperately wants to break down her walls so she can be free again. With the help from the men and a dog named Rebel, the two slowly find their way back to each other. But the Shadow Stalker is real and has his sights set on Veronica and using Connelly’s books against him. The two will need to fight all the demons, inside and out, to make it to the other side.
I loved this book, the heartache that Veronica faces each day and the triumph of her facing her own demons comes through the pages and is so tangible, you can feel it. Connelly, patient, strong, unwavering loyalty towards the woman he has always loved, never leaving her side, sighing and swooning over the man who doesn’t give up on her. Plenty of suspense, trying to figure out who the Shadow Stalker really is and the mystery behind the legend comes to light. Not only that but Rebel and Alfie, the power of healing through the two canines who are loyal and give comfort to their human.
It’s not done yet, the mystery with Redwood, another unsolved case and I can’t wait to see how that turns out.

I love this series! And Veronica & Conn's book is one of my favorites. I love that the dogs played such an integral role in both the heroine's healing (from an unspeakable assault in her past) and in discovering the man stalking her and helping to keep her safe. Loved, loved, loved Connelly. At first he comes across as a brainy hero (and he is), but he has a lot more going for him when it comes to search & rescue, helping Veronica heal from her severe PTSD and agoraphobia, and in unmasking the fabled Shadow Stalker mystery. Possibly the best mystery of the series thus far. I appreciated, too, watching Veronica's journey back to the fighting spirit she once was. Realistically, she'll never be the old Vee from before the assault. But the new Vee even helped in the climactic search for one last victim. (No spoilers here. ;)

One of my favorite things is the "team" and how the S&R/therapy team support each other and come together when needed. I think we saw a glimpse of Sawyer's story, and we certainly have a glimpse into Cal & Ellie's story in the epilogue. This story really embraced the women becoming friends, too.

My only disappointment was several typos, especially in the last half of the book. Another pass from an editor would have fixed that. But overall, I highly recommend this series. I find the characters irresistible!
