OMG!That's all I have to say about Shades of Wyoming. The book was pure awesome, it was slow, mysterious and great and the twists.
Julia Southern does not know where she is going, she has lost her zest for her life, her creativity and painting. Julia grew up wealthy but her life never seemed right after her father died, she had a disastrous marriage, lost her baby, moved back to her home-town but her mother always made her unhappy so moved to California where she spent the last five years in the fast lane, but after her closest friend died and Julia found herself thinking of death she just picked up her car and drove. Now, she is stuck in the middle of nowhere and needs to attend nature's call. So, she walks, encounters a storm, sees a cabin and then darkness.
When she wakes up it is dark and she finds a man, Ryder tending to her. Julia is dis-oriented but it is dark and she spends the night there. The next day she feels like moving on but her ankle is injured then there is Ryder, he's a paradox, one moment he is all courteous to her, gentlemanly and the other rude and aloof. Julia asks him why he stays in a cabin, which is rustic, out of the way, if he has neighbours but Ryder seldom answers. He cares for her, cooks and stays out of her way. He even saves her from the river. Ryder had this whole charm, he was courteous and man he could blush.
We find out that Ryder is wanted by the law and he is suspicious of Julia's purpose, where she came from, but still he doesn't put her out and even gives her his bed to sleep. They fall into a routine, he teaches her to fish and even takes her to the springs. Julia finds the peace she is looking for all her life there in the middle of nowhere. The scene where there is a rattle-snake inside was kind of hilarious.
The book isn't all high-out passion, they share a kiss once and then nothing, life continues. Julia finds herself falling for him but she hardly knows him, atleast not what he does.
Ryder tells Julia he comes from nothing, his mother was a prostitute, he went to live with Indians after she died, loved it there, then left and tried to live a white-man's life before he was betrayed. They both become lovers, but when Julia tries to get close just stop, but you could feel the longing on both sides. I liked how Julia seduced him when he was trying to teach her to shoot.
The book was subtle, an old world charm about it really. The shocker comes when they are running from Indians and Julia remembers something and finds out that she has almost travelled a century back, hence the battle between the Indians, the fascination with gold etc. Julia is shocked and wants to tell Ryder, but she loves him and wants nothing but to stay with him.
I wasn't expecting time-travel but it explained so many things and made me appreciate the book even more.
I loved the ending, it just seemed so perfect to me.
