This is an oldie (2000) Harlequin title spruced up with a beautiful new cover. I love the updated cover that reflects the setting for part of the book, the northern California coast, beautiful area. The story has a lot going for it. I really liked the characters and the way Sala wrote their backgrounds, it made relating to them and their motives easier to understand. This book is marketed as a "Romance" but it reads more like a "Romantic-Suspense" and a pretty good one at that. Even being an oldie, it holds its own and is a really good read.

David Wilson, aka Jonah, is the head of a super-secret covert government organization, SPEAR. Someone is trying to disgrace him and take him down, make him out to be a traitor. He needs help and the only one he can trust is Easton Kirby, a burned-out agent who has worked as a hotel manager for 10 years and has no interest in returning to active agent status.

Jonah sends Alicia Corbin, a beautiful, genius agent who has no idea of her appeal, to convince East to take the assignment. She is no feme fatale and has no idea how to handle this assignment. When East and Ally meet, sparks fly but neither is prepared for that. The kidnapping of East's son forces him to go all in on Jonah's mission and finds himself going all in with Ally too.

The first book in the A Year of Loving Dangerously series. The series is written by several different writers but the first and last book were written by Sharon Sala. East Kirby was a SPEAR operative but "retired" and is now managing a resort for SPEAR personnel. Jonah, SPEAR boss, has a traitor in his mists and needs East to help find out who he is. He sends Alicia Corbin to persuade him. But Alicia is no Femme Fatale. When East's son is abducted, East and Alicia join forces to get him back.

It was a pretty good read. Not great but good. The main characters weren't as fleshed out as I think they could have been and I didn't really feel the chemistry but I still liked it.

SPEAR operative Alicia "Ally" Corbin has been given her next assignment. She must persuade former SPEAR operative Easton Kirby to come back into the fold and help their mysterious boss, Jonah, find out who is trying to ruin him. East is done with the spy game and has no intention of going back, even if the tempting Ally would be his partner in the field. But when East learns that his son has been kidnapped by the same person who is threatening Jonah, he and Ally must work to rescue Jeff before he becomes a casualty in this war.

This is the first book in a multi-author series called "A Year of Living Dangerously". This book gets the series off to a good start. I enjoyed seeing East and Ally working together to figure out where Jeff was being held. My rating: 4 Stars.

This is the first book in a 12 book series by several different authors. I assume the main mystery (who has targeted Jonah) will not come to a conclusion until the last book. I am not interested in the other books. I will read the last book which is by Sala. I will forget about the others.

One inconsistency I found was Allie's education. In one place it was stated that she entered high school at 10 and graduated 2 years later at 12. She told East that she graduated at 10. A little editing was needed here.

I liked the book as I do most of Sala's books. That was the only reason I read it and plan to read the last in the series as it is by Sala. I do not like the cliffhanger aspect in that Jonah's mystery was not concluded. However, the book did have a good ending for Allie and East.

East Kirby and Ally Corbin are forced to work together to protect the secret spy organization they're both part of. Then the hunt gets personal when East's son gets kidnapped in the process. An enjoyable read.
