The premise of this story really excited me and the opening delivered the comedy, surprise, and a colorful Zoe.
What I enjoyed most about this story was Zoe and Karrie's tight-knit friendship. It's more about female friendship than romance, with Karrie's dozens of cursed dates being the backdrop against which their friendship is cast.
Zoe's POV was my favorite, though early on I struggled to know which of the two povs I was in. Eventually, the chapter header artwork began to make sense.
While Zack is a side character love interest, he's decently colorful and interesting--and of course, handsome. He pairs just as well against Zoe as he does with Karrie in creating suspense and humor.
For me, Zoe wins most-interesting character. She's funny, quirky, witty, and murderously fun.
Zoe and Karrie are polar opposites in their styles and appearance and personalities, adding to the dry, subtle humor each murder creates.
The ending brought a nice and unexpected twist that really had me holding my breath and smirking at the same time. The story isn't even close to horror, so you can't take the murders too seriously. NOTHING is handled too seriously, yet the comedy struck me as fairly low-key.
I didn't get the LOL moments I was craving, and docked one star for a bit of an ambling middle. I can't quite put my finger on why it didn't resonate, but the humor at best, pulled a few side smiles.
Zoe, Karrie, and Zack work to solve the mystery of Karrie's murdered boyfriends, while we, the readers know who murdered half of them. But the other half... everyone on page and we desire to know.
I entered the book expecting humor closer to "Arsenic and Old Lace."
This book contains a good bit of crude language, which I knew about before diving in.
