Rate this book
In the summer of 1914, sixteen-year-old Evan Sinclair leaves home to join the Great War for Civilization. Little does he know that, despite the war raging in Europe, the true source of conflict will emerge in Ottoman Palestine, since it's from Jerusalem where the German Kaiser dreams to rule as Holy Roman Emperor.

Filled with such historical figures as Gertrude Bell, T.E. Lawrence, Winston Churchill, Faisal bin Hussein and Chaim Weizmann, Wages of Empire follows Evan through the killing fields of the Western Front where he will help turn the tide of a war that is just beginning, and become part of a story that never ends.

I received a free copy of Michael Cooper’s masterfully written, Wages of Empire via the Niche Reader and was pleasantly shocked at the level of detail and research of the early years of WWI, which the author brought to life via vivid characters both fictional and real, in a unique region so pertinent to today’s events. The author takes readers through the complex realities of the Kaiser’s empire building focusing on Israel, Palestine, Ukraine, and the decay of the Ottoman Empire. The author’s unique voice delves into the personal relationships of families sandwiched inside the Austrian Hungarian Empire, Russian, Ottoman and British empires, enlightening readers to the little told history of how WWI impacted those living in Palestine and Jerusalem and regions outside Western Europe. He masterfully captures the era using gripping tension and extensive research of a region I had never studied previously. Through the strains of a grieving father and his youthful teenage son, this era of WWI comes to life through the author’s breezy prose and dialogue illuminating a period/region of time every student of history should study. A reader doesn’t have to be a fan of historical fiction to enjoy this well-researched tale that explores the universal pressures of war on both civilians and those that must fight it, families just trying to survive the maniacal dreams of kings and kaisers and the hazards and horrors of their leaders’ grandiose ambitions. I was immediately transported to an era and place in history which helped me understand the struggles facing this region today. This is a beautifully written tale covering three continents during a horrible period in our world history. An enlightening fictional tale springs from every page in the unforgettable details of the consequences of empire building on ordinary citizens and their futures. Cooper has made this era and those that lived in this place and time come alive. Five stars all around. I cannot wait for the story to continue in his next book.

History comes to life as the intricate weave of power plays, hopes, dreams, and oaths knot together in the thorns of war.

This tale takes a look at a sixteen-year-old, who desires to fight for all that's good in WWI, but it also goes way beyond this single character's aspirations and struggles. The author has clearly done his research and offers a solidly based dive into the time frame. The leaders, families, and leading influences in Europe during WWI seep into the problems surrounding the dissipation of the Ottoman Empire and create a tight knit tale, which hits personal and emotional levels while still incorporating the political and cultural difficulties these areas faced. Well-known figure heads of the time add a solid foundation, while fictive aspects glide in between to add excitement, tension, and, for all things, heart.

While the factual side will draw in history fans, the story fills in the important human aspect, which is so often forgotten in dryer history books. Especially the relationship between the father and son stabs the heart and creates a close connection with the story. The vast array of individuals involved (from political heads to sworn protectors of their religious beliefs) presents a detailed landscape. This also means that it takes a little more thought while reading this novel than a lighter, quick read might. But for more engaged readers, this tale promises richness and so much more.

While it is sold as a read for the young adult audience, I do see adults enjoying it as well.

Thanks to The Niche Reader and Koehler Books for a free eARC of this book!

I am not at all familiar with WWI and the characters and motivations involved therein. Hence I was thrilled to have a crack at this Historical Fiction and immerse myself in the world there-of.

While the book was indeed a fast-paced and fascinating glimpse into the peoples, places, and times leading into the war there was far more "tell" rather than "show". There are a few action scenes but considering the subject material I expected way more - especially considering the main character, Evan Sinclair, is practically on the front lines towards the end. Much of his travels we are told about after the fact instead of following him on them. My only hope is that the next book will delve into this more deeply.

It is also possible since there are so many deferent characters in the book who all have several chapters, the author did not want the book to be too long. Still, my personal preference would have been, tell me what's going on with those characters while having me ride along with Sinclair.

Additionally, I felt the character and storyline of Montagu Walker to be the 2nd more interesting but not well written about. Digging in the Holy Land led by a Nazi "clairvoyant" to excavate the Temple Mount? More please!

As I said before, my hope is the 2nd volume will have more "meat". Perhaps this book was more of an "exposition" as in the beginning of the play to set the stage for the reader.

Wages of Empire by Michael Cooper takes readers on an immersive journey through the turbulent landscape of World War I, providing a fresh perspective on the contest for control over Palestine. Through the captivating odyssey of sixteen-year-old Evan Sinclair, propelled by youthful idealism into the turmoil of the 'Great War for Civilization,' Cooper skillfully portrays the nuances of personal transformation amid the uproar of battle and global politics. Seamlessly interweaving historical personalities such as Gertrude Bell and T.E. Lawrence, the author, permeates his narrative with authenticity and depth, enriching the reader's engagement. From the grim trenches of the Western Front to the strategic significance of Ottoman Palestine, the novel navigates the intricacies of war with finesse and insight. Through a diverse cast of memorable characters spanning continents, including figures like Kaiser Wilhelm, Cooper crafts a captivating mosaic of human experience. At its core, Wages of Empire delves into timeless themes of family, ambition, and the determined human spirit, transcending the limits of historical chronicles. With its masterful prose and meticulous research, this novel emerges as both a gripping tale of intrigue and a poignant meditation on the trials of war and the enduring decency inherent in humanity's darkest hours.

Loved it. “Wages of Empire” shines a spotlight on a part of World War I that this reader knew very little about – the struggle for control of Palestine. Michael Cooper deftly lays out separate strands of memorable characters across the globe – from Kaiser Wilhelm to a Red Cross volunteer - to bring this chapter of history to life. Vivid life. Cooper elegantly intertwines the multiple strands he has created, making for a read that is both a gripping page turner and a carefully observed character study. One strand in particular, that of a grieving father and his idealistic teenage son, touched me deeply: the feelings experienced by Clive Sinclair and his son Evan are universal. You don’t have to be a fan of history to enjoy this book. Cooper’s novel, while very well researched, also explores themes that go beyond this particular chapter of history; and that is, the universal pressure and stressors put on families during the hardest of times, and the potential hazards and triumphs of ambition. And Cooper does it all with relatable, distinct characters. Beautifully written in a voice - and details - that capture the era, “Wages of Empire” is a must-read.

Once again, Michael Cooper presents an outstanding book based on historical fact interspersed with richly defined characters. With extensive research and his personal history of the region, the author brought to life the events that occurred as WWI unfolded in Europe, setting off a series of domino effects that encompassed all parts of Europe. Not only did this conflict affect many nations, but Dr. Cooper writes how the “waging” of war also creates conflict among families and also inner conflict. The main character, Evan, a young man from Cedar City, Utah, is drawn to this conflict, despite his father’s wishes. The book is filled with conflicts between sons and fathers, yet also self-discovery and growth. Dr. Cooper weaves a wonderful tale of history, destruction, and lessons to be learned. An important book relevant for today.

Only two stars awarded to this book ,it was so disjointed you had a job to follow the characters and i thought the main character was not developed enough. Also everybody except for kaiser bill and his cronies were the only evil ones in the story, the good old british were faultless and perfect as were all the other nationalities. To me it was very nieve writing and it spoilt the book for me, the next book is called crossroads of empire and i hope mr cooper really improves his writing. It reminded me of ken follets CENTURY triolgy which was EXCELLENT , and i,m afraid our mr cooper has a very long way to get to that standard if ever. So we shall have to see how the next instalment transpires , as some teachers say room for improvement.

A Rollicking Story of Danger, Loss, and Love; Set during the Outbreak of WWI

A boy, seeking to strike a blow for liberty, jumps in over his head.
A man, fixated on finding lost treasures, sacrifices everything including his soul.
A young nurse finds love in the bloody fields of Flanders.
Guardians of ancient secrets risk their lives and those of their loved ones to fulfill their oaths.
“Wages of Empire” is a fair telling of a critical time in the history of Palestine, one that reveals the decent humanity of each individual—be they Muslim, Jew, Christian, European, Arab, or Turk—in the face of war’s hurricane.

Strap on your boots and grab your history books, because Wages of Empire is one wild ride through the Great War! Evan Sinclair thinks he’s heading into battle for king and country, but surprise—he’s actually smack in the middle of a high-stakes chess game featuring spies, world leaders, and one German Kaiser with major empire-building dreams. The action? Non-stop. The history? Juicy. And Evan? Let’s just say this kid sees way more than his fair share of war and political scheming. If you like historical fiction that punches you in the gut and makes you think, don’t walk—RUN to grab this book. 🏃‍♂️💨📖

I'm not familiar with WW1 and the different aspects of it as it was before my time. However, my interest is personal as I know my grandfather served in this war. There were a lot of locations, characters, and politics to keep track of and the format I downloaded didn't help. I didn't like epub at all. It was interesting if you could keep track of everyone but I was very disconcerted when it ended and said it would be continued in the next book. I wanted a conclusion. I received a free copy of this book via The Niche Reader and hope they offer the next installment and I get selected again.

This is the 2nd book I have read by Cooper. Much of the story is I know from my own personal reading as I try to understand the current Middle East situation with Israel and the Arabs of Gaza. He seems to get his facts straight and doesn't promote any political angle. I enjoy his writing, as tame as it is (YA) and am constantly looking up historical figures and terms. He does give a nice glossary of characters at the end of the book. I can't wait to get the next book in the series, Crossroads of Empires.

Wages of Empire is a panoramic view of the opening days of WWI, and I sincerely enjoyed the story weaving through the lesser known elements of the Kaiser's interest in Jerusalem, the Ottoman Empire, and the Arabian connection. This is the kind of historical fiction that I love staying up late to read.

I received a copy of Wages of Empire and I liked it as it talks about the early years of WW1. The author really put some research into this book and with the characters coming to life in the story as well.  There is a father and son relationship in this book and the book goes into the war time and also is a bit of historical fiction. I really like that the author covers a bad time in history and makes it into something amazingly written. I would read more by this author to see what happens if he does another book:)
