Welcome to the Basement: An Upside-Down Guide to Greatness

Rate this book
If Jesus is the chief cornerstone of everything God is building in the world--what floor do you want to be on? In Welcome to the Basement, podcaster Tim Ross shows readers how they can achieve true greatness in the upside-down kingdom Jesus is building.

When Jesus came to earth, his first-shall-be-last teachings turned the world upside-down. So it's no surprise that when some of the earliest Jesus-followers started spreading the Good News, they were accused by the powers-that-be of having "upset the world" (Acts 17:6). They were labeled disrupters and troublemakers because they were preaching a new king, a new kingdom, and a new way of life.

Christians today are still called to upset the world. In Welcome to the Basement, Tim Ross gives both a rallying cry and a practical guide for becoming great in God's kingdom. In a conflict-ridden world that values celebrity, visibility, and self-promotion, Jesus invites you to join him in "the basement," where ordinary acts of intentional love, service, empathy, and kindness have extraordinary power to welcome people into Jesus' kingdom of peace, joy, and life to the fullest. Readers of Welcome to the Basement will

discover that they are God's masterpiece, called to a great identity and a great mission;  learn to receive God's unstoppable love and grace that is always reaching out to the lost and hurting;experience for themselves the good that God has for them--because only people whose lives have been turned upside-down by God can become true world upsetters; andgain step-by-step guidance for identifying the people, places, and pieces that they've been called to disturb, disrupt, and shower with God's love.

Sometimes the humblest acts of goodness have the greatest power. And sometimes the lowest floor of the building is where the real party is. Jesus is the cornerstone of a new kind of kingdom--will you step into the good things God is doing in the world?

When it comes to making the life of Jesus practical and how he sets the example for my life, this book is it. Tim draws you in immediately and the questions at the end of each chapter, are thought provoking. I would recommend this book to anyone whether born again or not. I am enjoying each chapter and excited to finish and share it with my family, friends, colleagues and men group.

I disliked this book so much. I'll be frank. There didn't seem to be much depth to the content, the "chapters" felt entirely too short. I'm actually still reading it and I'm only going to finish for the sake of finishing. I did appreciate the promptings at the end of the chapters, but the book/content itself felt like a lot of fluff to me. Very disappointed as I was looking forward to this read.

Tim Ross has created an eye opening, heart filling gem that serves as both nourishment and a balm.

As I read this book so many things in scripture were simplified. I found myself and past experiences in some of the examples he shared. I loved this book and will gladly read more from this author and follow his podcast. I highly recommend this book.

I had the privilege to read an advance copy of Welcome to the Basement courtesy of Nelson Books and NetGalley.

I eagerly anticipated this book's release, being an avid follower of Tim Ross's podcast, "Welcome to the Basement." Despite not knowing what to expect, I found myself pleasantly surprised.

Tim Ross's ability to touch on a diverse range of topics in his podcast is mirrored in the book, and I particularly appreciated the concise nature of each chapter. His knack for drawing comparisons with current culture made the reading experience feel familiar, almost as if I were listening to him speak on his podcast.

While the book didn't diverge significantly from the content of his podcast, it delved deeper into specific subjects. However, the breadth of issues Tim addresses in his long-form podcast format can't fully translate into a shorter book.

One aspect I truly enjoyed was the ease with which I could digest each chapter. Tim's thoughtfulness in including notes after every chapter, akin to a workbook, was impressive. Tim excels at providing depth and clarity on commonly misunderstood words, offering precise definitions and demonstrating their relevance to modern Christianity. His emphasis on reevaluating our usage of these words resonated deeply with me.

I admired Tim's unapologetic approach to religion, regardless of its popularity. His ability to seamlessly connect biblical scripture with contemporary culture was impressive, as were his relatable personal anecdotes that found relevance in everyday situations.

In essence, if you're seeking a refreshing take on culture without the monotony, or if you're interested in exploring religious themes in a non-traditional manner, this book comes highly recommended.

I was fortunate enough to attend a book signing event to have my copy personalized by Tim Ross. Although this term is overused, I truly feel this is a perfect example for being ‘unputdownable’! Tim shares a different perspective of what it means to be a Christ-follower, and I could relate well with his writing style.

After listening to several dozen of ‘The Basement’ podcast episodes, this book felt like I, the reader, was the guest sitting on his couch during an airing. His brevity and getting straight to the point was also nice for note-takers such as myself.

Overall, I’d recommend this book for literally everyone and have bought several extra copies to share with my family. It has inspired me to strengthen my walk with Christ, which helped lead to a personal breakthrough.

This was the best investment I’ve made in my life, and recommend everyone reads ‘Welcome to the Basement’ for an eternal lifestyle change. You won’t regret reading this book, and I hope you also choose to ‘Press B’!

Welcome to the Basement: An Upside-Down Guide to Greatness
by Tim Ross
This book opened my eyes to things I never thought about as a Christian.
While 'The Basement' is rich with insights, I've chosen to highlight the aspects that resonated most with me as they reflect my spiritual journey.
First, I was very hesitant to read past chapter one when he said litty. It is so easy for little things to distract us when God has a more significant message for us.

While many strive for the top, Tim Ross challenges this traditional thinking, suggesting that God calls people to the bottom. His use of the word 'upset' throughout the book has left me questioning: Is the top really the bottom, or is the bottom the actual top in a spiritual context? While reading this, it made me think about how, in Matthew 7: 24-29, God talks about building on firm foundations in Him. It also talks about how the crowds were amazed at Jesus' teachings and how they thought He was unlike their teachers of religious laws. Tim also touches on how we need to follow the word, not religion.

What I enjoyed about this book is the position that he knew when it comes to the historical relationship to Christianity and church that people have with those 2 pieces. You also have those of us who grew up in the church and those who may have grew up in the church, and had a moment of separation , or those who never had an encounter with God in that setting.

What Tim does good is establishing the fact that God is at the center of all things and a center of our existence is our hearts. To do the work that Tim mentions , there has to be a level of confidence in knowing God isn’t limited to just one space, one group, one idea, or one method of reach and technique.

I employ anyone to read this to not just do the work, but be called out in the way we may view how we show God to others in our lives, and address any gatekeeping.

Perhaps I'm biased because I'm a dweller #Duh. I've always loved Tim's direct approach to the subject at hand, all of which is directed towards being authentic with oneself and with God. I did the audiobook knowing he read it was not disappointed. His inflections and chrckles throughout the text was both engaging and refreshing. The content, addictive. I will have to reread this again soon, because I feel like one will need to soak the principles in, rather than skimming them (as one might tend to do for a quick read or listen). I appreciate the short and succint chapters that allows contemplation within them and between them. I'm glad I went to the basement!

I wanted to love this book because I greatly admire and respect Tim.
He's such an important voice in my current faith walk.
I wish he were around when I was a teenager. Maybe I wouldn't have felt like such an outsider in every situation I found myself in (at church, at school, etc).

The book isn't bad but it doesn't pack the punch I wanted (expected?) either.
Perhaps it's because so much of this he's already said on The Basement.
The book was somewhat underwhelming although very important.
I think perhaps this book is better suited for a newbie to The Basement.
Either way, the message is important and needs to be heard everywhere.

Welcome to the Basement by Tim Ross is for this season. It was so personable, practical, and profound. I felt as though we were having a conversation with Tim and considered myself a virtual podcast audience member. Transforming and upsetting your life starts internally. Tim allows us to be vulnerable by doing a deep dive into how we feel, what we think, and what should change. If you are looking for words of wisdom, humor, discipleship, and motivation, head over to “Welcome to the Basement”. I feel encouraged and ready to take the leap into my next…now.

The truth in this book is refreshing. The teaching and the simple way to actually apply the teaching and recognize shifts in your own life are what I felt was very impactful. With thought-provoking questions at the end of each chapter, it's clear that Tim's desire is not just to write a book, not just to teach this way of life He has been living for decades, but for each and every reader to think through, pray through, receive from the Holy Spirit for yourself, and take action to apply and live out the truth of God's Word here on earth in your own life.

This is an absolute must read!

This book is a practical guide to being a follower of Jesus. Tim Ross breaks down discipleship, life with Jesus and culture, and living out the truth of God’s word. These pages are filled with wisdom and insight, and each chapter ends in a way to provoke the reader to think about their own life and the practical application for them.

The writing is fluid, captivating and thought provoking throughout. You won’t want to put it down until it’s done.

This book is a simple and poignant call to arms- or should I say, call to open our arms- for ALL followers of Christ. Take Tim Ross' hand and let him lead you through the acceptance and vulnerability of what it means to be a disciple. It shines the light on the reality of our brokenness and gives us real life examples of how to flip things on their heads to bring our pieces to the only one who can truly mend us.

Welcome to the Basement is a fast read that sounds just like Tim Ross. I can actually hear his voice as I read. In normal Tim Ross fashion it is engaging, funny, practical, enlightening and full of Bible. The teaching is sound and easy to follow with a nugget in here for everyone. I would recommend this book to all ages and stages in their walk with Jesus.

This was excellent.

Invite people to the basement. Love it.

He broke down what it means to be a Christian in simplest terms. It was funny at times and serious on others. Just love it.

I also love the fact he read it himself. (I read the audio book) He is a great reader and I love hearing his voice.

This book is an amazing read to give you more joy and ease in your faith. It makes being a believer in Jesus very easy and simple instead of complicated by laws and the fear of sin. Tim Ross is a sweetheart, I met him personally at a book signing and everything he says he endured himself. Wonderful read. This is one of those books you need to read and pass on.

I feel like this book could have been written by sitting and listening to my husband and I's conversations over the past couple of years.
I love how God confirmed so much through it and what discipleship truly means. I read it as an e-book, but it has journaling so I would recommend getting a paper copy. I hope to get a paper copy, review it, and journal my thought in the available spaces.

4.5 stars! I really loved the practicality of this book and the way that Tim (almost called him Pastor Tim lol— he writes about how he doesn’t like the redundancy of that) always eloquently writes about the pursuit of relationship with God and discipleship. Such great reminders to stay grounded in our pursuits. The practicality of his tenets are so refreshing.

Read this as a foundation for a series on humility and it was fine. I didn't hate it, although I did really disagree with some parts of it. I also really liked some of it. Ultimately just not that memorable though, I found myself not even using it as a reference for the series. Very strong millennial pastor / youth pastor trying too hard vibes but still overall enjoyable.

This was a really good book! It took me longer than I thought it would for me to actually finish it, but once I got into it again it was hard for me to put it down.

I definitely recommend this book to others - it really is pointing to the foundation of who Jesus was and how he behaved. I wish more people saw it this way, but I'll start with me.
