Clare Press proves to us that solutions to the biggest problem the fashion industry faces - pollution - have already been developed, and consumer action (selecting better, owning less, wearing more, repairing) is only part of the solution. Arguably more impactful is - smarter planning by the fashion industry so that appropriate textiles are used and the system does not routinely overproduce waste destined for landfill by 40% (avoidable, when a made-to-measure tshirt can be laser cut in 90 seconds these days as is currently done by Citizen Wolf), and - garment and textile recycling at a community level using advances in textile traceablity (Near Infrared Light is already being used to identify textiles at a fully automated textile sorting plant in Sweden). Wear Next presents you with tantalising predictions of the world's future when existing solutions are adopted more widely. Wear Next is a must read for anyone who wears clothes.
Everyone wears clothes, even if not interested in "fashion". This is an easy read book that covers the main issues in the future of fashion. It is written in the contemporary non-fiction style where the writer makes themselves the focus and explains with unnecessary detail who they spoke to and how, and writes "I asked XX person from XX company about XX" or "a pendant glistens at her neck", instead of just writing about the answer. Better done than most and makes you think.
A well written book that explores the future of fashion and how sustainability might impact what we do. It has a positive message that provides hope in the sea of negative information that often surrounds climate change. A great book for anyone interested in sustainable fashion.
