The life of Tolka by Niveditha Preeth and Nitin Chopra is not just a story of how two Indians faced the wrath of the Ukrainian war but encapsulates the bloodshed, danger, helplessness the country Ukraine is going through and while Dr. Nitin was able to find his steps back, the people of Ukraine and many other people weren't able to to include not just people but the author's own loved animals. This book is a big reminder of how war leaves nobody and while one would like to compare the situation to the recent pandemic,it still remains an “organised murder.” While reading the book I was reminded of the war between Israel & p@lestine and it just reminded me of the graphics of women, men and children who lost lives or families because the country owns ammunition whether it's Israel or Ukraine, war remains the war where the tremors and trauma felt of this incidents never leave the country, the nation as was seen in its beautiful way by the author in this book. This book is a wake up call to realise the weight of war that's happening and the wars that can happen in future. How sure are we in the same situation that we won't fall on our own? War doesn't see time. It's like an attack of a wild boar. It will attack you, tear you apart and leave you there to die. You are lucky if you survive or it's just death, death everywhere. Pick up this book to read of the innocence lost of the author while their place which also became a home was being torn apart and how did they save themselves and leave you thinking with the question “safe but till when?”The book is an account that should be read for the author's experience,to understand war and the seriousness of it. If you have not faced a war zone area, it's imperative to read this account because it's right now, encompassing the emotion of so many.

"The life of Tolka" by Dr. Nitin Chopra and Dr. Niveditha Preeth is a memoir of Nitin Chopra a.k.a Tolka who was an Ukraine-based Indian medical student who experienced the 2022 Ukrainian invasion. This story is based on something that actually happened, a war, which happened not a few hundred years ago but a year ago and this is the reality of the world. My heart goes out to each individual, each and every child that has gone through it and is experiencing it. Truly humanity has failed. Every chapter starts with a picture making it surreal.

For Tolka, Kyiv was his home, where he studied and became a doctor. It was February, 2022 and he had heard of the rumours of the Russian invasion and it soon became a reality. It is so saddening to read honestly, imagine reading news and headlines of a war and being the victim in it. We can feel through the writing, what Tolka was going through, the panic, anxiety, confusion and the absolute terror.

The book had flashbacks with Tolka going back to when he first came to Ukraine and how it became his home. They were like the light parts of the book as compared to the dark reality that he was going through. Life had become so unpredictable.

I wonder what if people start look beyond having power and occupying regions and instead started feeling empathy and happiness? Can world ever be peaceful?

I suggest this book to each and every one of you, it needs to be read because with how the world is going, no one knows when what could happen. It's well paced and one can finish in one sitting easily.

The life of Tolka is a narrative of the author's survival through the most trying times he ever had while living in Ukraine during a war. Even if we've all heard about it and experienced fear from watching the news, we will never be able to fully understand the emotions of those who experienced and survived this.
I can't even begin to fathom the level of despair and fear I had while reading this book, let alone the devastation it must have caused the author to be present and witness it all.

There were those insignificant times when the author smiled at the tiny things, offering optimism despite the terrible circumstances. Each chapter begins with quotations and illustrations that illustrate how war is nothing more than the destruction of things. It never yields a favorable opinion.

The idea of hope—a fragile yet powerful force that carries the protagonists through the darkest hours—is central to the story. The author deftly examines how people gain strength from their ties with one another, finding solace in the friendships formed in the crucible of strife. It demonstrates the tenacity of the human soul.

Authors remarkable narrative skills and ability to elicit empathy make this a riveting and unforgettable read. Readers will find themselves contemplating on the lingering echoes of heroism, sacrifice, and the unrelenting quest of hope in the face of seemingly insurmountable circumstances as the protagonists navigate the ravages of war.

The most heart breaking moment for me was when author saw the pedestrian bridge where once he had a birthday party with his friends and now it was all covered with blood and dead bodies. I applaud the author for his bravery and never giving up hope during those difficult times. And I'm grateful to them for writing this book and motivating others around you that there is always hope.

I had such deep sympathy for the Ukrainian people because of their kindness and compassion. It also dawned on me that the terrible aspects of war extend far beyond the news broadcasts.

The narrative moves at a breakneck pace that reflects the stress and urgency of Tolka's search for safety. The protagonist's predicament keeps the reader on the edge of their seat, forcing them to turn each page. The story resonates with universal themes of human perseverance and the effects of war on the individual, even if it is anchored in the particular circumstances of the Ukrainian invasion.

It feels like your heart is racing as you read this terrible book. There's a strange sense in the air, and the words on the pages make you jump. There's something unsettling about every sound, and even quiet has an air of dread.

"The Life of Tolka" is a heart wrenching collection of terrible experiences faced by an Indian medical student in Ukraine while Russia tried to invade Ukraine. If we look into history each time a war happens, it only causes destruction and not any progression. When some people are adamant for glory and power, the common people is left to bear all the sufferings and flee to atleast same their own lives leaving his hometown and everything which belongs to him behind.

The book unveils many hardly digestible truths about civilians who gets stuck in war zones because of the selfishness of a few greedy people. It is not a cool experience to keep running here and there holding life in your hands.

It also reminds us about what we see in news during wartime is nothing more than an opera to rise their ratings. The peace conferences which takes place in different parts of the world is another kind of business.

The memories of good times in that happy place adds to the pain and sufferings. The trauma experienced by common people is not easy to wash away even after the war is over.

🏳️ Heart touching narration.
🏳️ Each chapter begins with a quote against war and an image(or a collage) which shows the devastation that war brings.
🏳️ The goodness of Ukranians and their warmth made me feel so much for them. I also realised that war and its negative side is a lot more than the news telecasts.
🏳️ The physical and emotional trauma faced by civilians.
🏳️ From the beginning I felt really connected with this book. May be this is the best book I have ever read which throws lights on the ugly darkness of war.
🏳️ The epilogue is thought provoking. It added some valuable thoughts to my mind about war and peace.
🏳️ But I am not going to say that I love this one or I enjoyed this one. Every single chapter made me think deeper with tear filled eyes.
🏳️ It is time to open our eyes, give voice to our opinion and stand against any kind of war instead of waiting for it to reach our premises.

📌 "The Life of Tolka" is a unique book in every aspect. It touches the reader's soul in a heart breaking way instead of a soothing one. May none have to go through these hardships ever again because of war and may these kind of books never have to be return. May peace bless this world...

We all have heard about the Russian-Ukraine war destruction on news and social media but there was one side that wasn't showed enough- The side of students. This book written by Nitin Chopra an Indian medical student who live in Kyiv where he shares his soul wrecking experiences that he faced during that time.
The moment he heard loud noises at night he knew it wasn't something normal. There were many people who must've faced this situation and he took stand for them and tried to share everything with us.
War never was and never is the solution and this is shown beautifully as everytime a new chapter starts there is an image related to it or a quote showing how hurtful war can be.
If you are ready to cry while reading every single chapter then this one is for you and it'll change your opinions about your taken for granted life forever.
The way this book keeps going on was truly amazing and also undoubtedly beautifully written by the author. The author has a beautiful way of portraying what they've imagined in their mind, and they've done it beautifully.
This is a book literally changed the way I used to think my life's problem, and now it all seems to be very little as compared to theirs. Trust me You'll fall in love with this book as well as it's characters. From my side it's definitely a must read, you'll enjoy it for sure.

I have never read memoir before and as a virgin memoir reader who read this troubles of an Indian stuck in Ukraine during the conflicts, it is gut wrenching. When the book began and the description about everything resembled every dystopian sci-fi books I have read. The fiction is blurring to a reality in a very near future.

The selflessness seen in the people in the hard times provides a bit of comfort. Like how the old man helped them initially reminded me when I was stuck in Chennai during the floods and the unknown neighbours helped us. The pictures in the booked made everything seem even more real. And the memories of same places before and after the conflicts is an internal whirlpool and I emphathize with the author. This book shows how alien and dangerous one can feel in a foreign land. But the compassion of people is what unites everyone despite the differences

This book had so many beautiful lessons. We see humanity dying at one end and it’s also being revived in another end. The world does balance everything. While reading some descriptions were too horrific for me and I decided to skip those pages. Then it hit me , I have the option to skip reading this horror but somewhere else in this world people are facing this horror without choice. This memoir is a must read and it beautifully makes the readers emphathise and sympathise with the chaos.

A memoir from the time of war between Russia and Ukraine..

Trauma doesn’t end once the violence does; it lasts forever in the minds of the sufferers who visualise those moments over and over again’

Book- Life of Tolka
Author- Nitin Chopra & Niveditha Preeth

One of the most painful book I have ever read.
The book narrates the life of the author when he has been through the WAR between Russia and Ukraine..

The emotions he has experienced cannot be described in words..the fear, hopelessness, death, massive bloodshed, starvation, loneliness and despair….

The author has penned the storyline interlinked every past joyful memory with the now war land view making it more etched to memory…

I never imagined the war situation even in my dreams that it would this devastating….

Reading this book left me with tears…

Thank you Nitin Chopra for sharing your most excruciating experiences with us and making us to realise the value of life and peace..

"The Life of Tolka" is an immersive and harrowing narrative that thrusts readers into the heart of chaos, offering a visceral exploration of a world plunged into darkness by the 2022 Ukrainian invasion. The author masterfully crafts a relentless journey, transforming what was once a haven into a battleground where the symphony of gunshots and raining missiles brings forth devastation and death.

The protagonist, Tolka, an Indian medical student based in Ukraine, becomes a witness to unfathomable horrors, navigating the ruins of his second homeland as it crumbles to ash and rubble. The eloquent portrayal of a peaceful nation torn apart highlights the poignant contrast between the serenity of the past and the turbulent unknown of the present.

The narrative doesn't merely focus on the physical destruction but delves deep into the psychological impact of war. The beautiful memories that once defined Tolka's connection to Ukraine are shattered, leaving behind lifelong trauma. The author skillfully weaves a tapestry of despair, forcing Tolka into an involuntary odyssey for safety, testing the limits of his resilience and humanity.

The language employed in this saga is evocative, painting vivid pictures of the stark reality faced by Tolka. The use of metaphorical elements, such as the nation's identity shaping the protagonist, adds layers of complexity to the narrative. The dichotomy between the indomitable spirit striving for survival and the looming chaos seeking to consume is a central theme that resonates throughout the story.

As Tolka grapples with the crucible of war, the narrative prompts readers to question the fragility of humanity in the face of such catastrophic events. The depth of character development allows us to witness not only the physical struggles but also the internal conflicts, raising profound questions about the nature of resilience and the human spirit.

In conclusion, it is an unmissable testament to the human experience in the crucible of war. The author's poignant prose and nuanced exploration of trauma, survival, and resilience make this a compelling and emotionally charged narrative.

Review :
This is a memoir of two people who has experienced the horror, the hopelessness of war in first hand , when he was a resident in Kyiv. And I like how the authors structure the book, to make the readers to understand those situations, to feel the agony in it's raw form.

The book starts with the author having a nightmare of a very disturbing scene. But when the author wakes up, he tries to shake it off as just an absurd nightmare. But how the very next moment it becomes a partial reality and how "the city's future, including the author turned upside down". How"it not only destroys the entire country but also trample over the dreams and lives of innumerable people along with it". As the author says - "War not only takes lives but also the hope, positivity, and innocence of the survivors ".

And in this heart wrenching book in every chapter through the pictures and sharing the stories of his experiences the author portrayed it intricately.

I like how the author in one part of the story sharing his devastating experiences while stuck in Kyiv in that very crucial situation and trying to survive with hundreds and thousands of other people, he's on the next part sharing the beautiful, peaceful moments he spends in their with full of dreams and hopes. Both the pictures are mirroring each other and presenting the horror of War.

But in the book there's a part too where even after experiencing all these horrors how the author again gains hope and faith. But also there's an acceptance of How even after being "safe", he still thinks of the question - "safe .... until when?" And how still the roaring noise of aircraft evokes terror within him, and how there's a long way to go , before the author gains his true safety.

This is a type of book, I think everyone should read to understand to take a stand against this destruction.

'The Life of Tolka' is a first hand account of the Nitin Chopra, a.k.a. Tolka Nitin of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The words gave me an imaginary ride of Kyiv's bombing and other such dire events from the authors' lens, and it was heart-wrenching to say the least. It's easy to have a cosy seat on the sidelines and just be aware of a war going on somewhere in the world, and go about sprinkling words of pity for the affected people once in a while . The book made me confront the uncomfortable and harsh truth that just couldn't be conveyed through statistics on news and articles. The writing is unfiltered, which took me on a roller coaster of emotions, from the ache of facing death alone on a relatively unknown land, being on guard twenty four seven,to the desperation and helplessness in war ridden situations. The descriptions were so detailed and on-point, I could literally imagine the scenes, which added so much more power to the narration of Tolka's experience. The book holds up the emotional and psychological devastation that war victims and their families are forced to go through, despite being completely innocent and having nothing to gain, but everything to lose. Nobody is exempt from its immediate and after effects, be it an infant, adult or an aged person. Wars are catastrophic, and never the answer to any disagreement between two or more countries, all it brings us destruction, hopelessness and devastation.
The book moved me in ways that I hadn't expected at all, and it's definitely worth the time spent on it. Reading about these first hand experiences made me face facts that I wouldn't have given a thought to otherwise, since being informed about a war over news and reading someone's narration who has faced it in actuality, are vastly different.

Initially, doubtful about an Indian author delving into the Russian-Ukrainian war, I found my skepticism overturned by the book. The author's portrayal of his second home was touching, recounting both the highs and lows that shaped his deep connection. It prompted me to reconsider notions of home and outsider, and I'm grateful for the reflective journey the book led me on. With its concise and well-crafted narrative, I hope this book finds a broader audience to shed light on the aftermath of war.

In "The Life of Tolka," the author takes us on a gripping odyssey through a world shattered by chaos, vividly illustrating the aftermath of the Ukrainian invasion through his own experiences. I commend the author for surviving such a harrowing war.

The protagonist, a medical student from India with strong ties to Ukraine, faces the disintegration of his world amid the conflict, forcing him to abandon the nation for his own safety. The book chronicles his struggle for survival against insurmountable adversities in a world marred by devastation and death.

The narrative is weighty, delving into the destructive impact of war, the immeasurable toll on lives, and the enduring scars borne by survivors.

In summary, this novel stands as a tribute to the resilience of the human spirit and the lasting strength of hope amidst unimaginable challenges. "The Life of Tolka" is a compelling, emotionally charged journey that prompts contemplation on the delicate yet resilient nature of the human condition.

War is cruel, and though there's always a side that emerges victorious, their victory will always be written with the blood of thousands of innocent lives. The life of Tolka is based on the Russian war on Ukraine, the former slowly invading the latter since 2014. This book is an autobiographical account of the author's life in Ukraine who considers it his second home. He starts his humble journey from India to Ukraine with aspirations of becoming a doctor. But what awaits him is a life-changing event with severe repercussions. The author tries to find peace and hope by fulfilling his medical duties during the war while reminiscing about his good old days.

I fell in love with the quotes in the book that were full of optimism and courage even amid the shambles. The slight repetition at the beginning of the book improved as the story progressed and as emotions took over descriptive language. The book was visually evocative, too, with its illustrations of Ukraine before and during the war.

Like everyone else, I was also initially sceptical about the book as an Indian author writing about the Russo-Ukrainian war felt unauthentic to me. But the book proved me wrong. The author's feelings towards his second home were heartwarming as he recollected his best and worst moments there explaining why he considered it such. It made me reconsider the concept of home and outsider, and I am thankful to the book for making me reflect on it. It was to the point and neatly written, and I wish this book reached more audiences to understand the aftermath of war. But sadly, those who think war is a device for victory aren't mindful readers.

"The Life of Tolka" is a poignant memoir by Dr. Nitin Chopra, known as Tolka, documenting his experiences as an Indian medical student in Kyiv during the 2022 Ukrainian invasion. The narrative unfolds the stark reality of war, juxtaposing Tolka's peaceful memories of Ukraine with the chaos and terror that ensued during the invasion. The book is a compelling blend of personal anecdotes, flashbacks, and the brutal impact of war on individuals and communities.

The story revolves around Tolka's life in Kyiv, where he pursued his medical education. The plot takes a dramatic turn when the rumors of a Russian invasion turn into a horrifying reality. Each chapter begins with a picture, adding a surreal element to the narrative. The book masterfully weaves between Tolka's initial days in Ukraine, the escalating tension, and the eventual chaos of war. The flashbacks provide a glimpse into the light moments of his life, contrasting with the darkness of the invasion.

It is especially relevant for readers who have not faced a war zone, offering a visceral understanding of the emotional toll and devastation inflicted on innocent lives. "Life of Tolka" delves into the aftermath of the Russia-Ukraine war, painting a poignant picture of the destruction and suffering endured by the people. While we saw snippets of the happenings in news and social media, the authors offer firsthand experiences and hardships, weaving a narrative that is profoundly touching.
The simplicity of the language makes the book easy to follow. The narrative skillfully oscillates between wartime accounts and reflections on the past, family, and the authors' second home.
Reflecting on the once-beautiful and warm sanctuary, the devastating transformation triggered by the world-shaking bombings provokes an almost tearful reaction. What was once pleasant and serene turned into chaos within minutes.
Amid discussions of pre-war trips, the vivid portrayal of scenic locales evokes a sense of nostalgia and I felt as though I was walking along the author enjoying the places. The revelation of Tolka Nitin contracting COVID and undergoing quarantine before returning to his second home adds a layer of somber reality.
The aftermath of the bombings is depicted with chilling detail, prompting readers to imagine the harrowing experiences endured by the authors, their state of mind, and the collective trauma shared by friends and relatives.
The emotionally charged storyline swept me through a roller coaster of feelings, with tears threatening to spill from my eyes at any moment.
The words are sincere and carefully crafted to evoke the right emotions without resorting to exaggeration. The narrative underscores the profound impact of war on innocent civilians, resonating deeply with the reader. The book becomes a testament to the power, resilience, and vulnerabilities inherent in human nature, illustrating that actions have repercussions that extend far beyond individual lives.
The inclusion of pictures and quotes at the beginning of each chapter enhances the book, providing an additional layer of depth. The cover picture serves as a poignant reflection of the contents within.
"Life of Tolka" has left an indelible mark on my heart, earning a well-deserved 5/5 stars. It not only exposes the various facets of human life but also showcases the authors' brilliance in translating those experiences into words. I highly recommend reading this book; it has the power to touch your heart and soul in profound ways.

“In the Life of Tolka” presents a poignant and impactful story set amidst the backdrop of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. This narrative deeply delves into the challenges endured by Indian medical students, showcasing their struggles with the trauma. The book eloquently captures their journey, offering a gripping portrayal of their experiences amidst the turmoil of war.

The story vividly portrays the havoc and hopelessness that warfare unleashes, depicting how homes evolve from havens of safety into arenas of conflict where gunfire and relentless missile strikes overshadow every aspect of daily existence. Tolka and his companions’ emotional upheaval serves as a powerful mirror reflecting the universal human response during moments of adversity, encapsulating the profound experience shared by many amid crises.

Central to the narrative is the concept of hope, a delicate yet influential element that guides the main characters through their most challenging moments. The author adeptly explores how individuals draw strength from their connections with others, discovering comfort and support within the bonds forged amidst adversity. This aspect vividly illustrates the resilience and determination inherent in the human spirit.

The author’s exceptional storytelling prowess and talent for evoking empathy render this book a compelling and enduring piece of literature. As readers delve into its pages, they will undoubtedly reflect on the enduring echoes of bravery, selflessness, and the tireless pursuit of hope amid what appears to be overwhelming challenges. Through the protagonists’ journey amidst the devastations of war, these themes resonate profoundly, leaving an indelible mark on the reader’s mind.

Author’s inclusion of pre-war and post-war images showcasing Ukrainian cities and monuments, revealing the heartbreaking transformation from beauty to ruins adds significantly to the story telling. The incorporation of profound quotes at the start of each chapter resonated deeply with me. Tolka’s reflections on joyful moments amid adversity throughout the memoir were poignant. However, I felt the narrative could have benefited from clearer delineation between past and present timelines.

For those in search of a compelling and emotionally resonant exploration of human resilience, this book offers a captivating odyssey. It goes beyond being a mere publication, serving as a profound testament to the strength we possess and emphasizing the significance of peace.

“Someday, all of this world be a distant memory, just like the pages of a forgotten history textbook for the world. But for those who lived and survived the devastation, it would be a constant trauma ; a constant threat looming over their heads, and a constant reminder of death and the uncertainities of tomorrow.”

Nitin goes to Ukraine for his medical studies. Everything is going well. He makes new friends, visits a lot of new places, and enjoys life to the fullest. But one day, it suddenly comes to an end. Russia invaded Ukraine, and now there's chaos everywhere. There's no safe place to take shelter. It's not certain whether you'll see the next sunrise or not. The rest of the book tells how horrifying the scenarios were and the hopeless situations Nitin went through.

This is one of those books that has the potential to leave an imprint on your soul. It does. An imprint of war. It literally shows that everything is messed up in war. The only guarantee war gives is that there's no guarantee. You never know which breath will be your last. There were a lot of instances where I was hesitating to flip the page and read further because of the constant fear of witnessing something more soul-shattering than I already had.

Each chapter begins with a quote and a picture. Many of them shows before and after the invasion conditions of various places. There are two particular pictures which I'll never be able to forget, one is of a dusted teddy bear under the punctured tires of a car that has bullet marks over every square inch of it and the other one is of showing parallels between the Ind-Pak Partition and Kyiv 2022. Nitin has also included pictures from his own life. Comes an incident when he come across a bridge on which his birthday had been celebrated. His heart broke into a million pieces when he saw it destroyed.

The book ends by leaving behind a few blank pages. I think that they were given there on purpose. I feel that they symbolize the trail of silence that wars and deaths always leave behind.

The life of Tolka must be read by everyone without any bias, irrespective of their preferred genre. It's a heartbreaking memoir of an invasion that was the largest attack on a European country since World War II. Just go for it straightaway. Period.

💥 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐨𝐥𝐤𝐚 authored by Niveditha Preeth and Dr. Nitin Chopra, is a melancholic, piteous, heartrending story with fictional-thriller amalgamated genre, accounting the horrific events endured by the protagonist/author, during Russia's attempted invasion in Ukraine. While dealing with this horrendous, gruesome event, the author also strives with COUID, which imparts a dimension of grim realism in the tale.
.
💥 To find out, whether the protagonist made out of these dire circumstances, one needs to dive into the life of TOLKA....
.
💥 Whenever a conflict has broke out inevitably, historical background demonstrates that it only sums up in devastation and nothing else. Only the civilians are left to abide by the tribulations. This is what totally describes the plotline. With an empirical elucidation by both the Authors, the novel graphically analyzes and illustrates the repercussions. Aside from all tidbits, it's appreciable how the writers convey all the poignant accounts of the personal struggles of those difficult times. To be honest, I felt the novel itself started with some of the spine-chilling scenarios, and depictions that made the readers hooked until the last pages. Some of the quotes or thoughts included in each chapter by the protagonist, can make oneself realize the meaning of life, existence, and situations.
.
💥 While the cover of the book is completely appealing and looks aesthetic, the title is unique and suits aptly. The plot is adroitly narrated and the storyline develops as we turn the pages. It's commendable how the Author describes vividly the pain of the consequences and the ordeals faced by the civilians. Well, I can definitely guarantee that this novel takes you into tumultuous emotions of highs and lows, due to its soul-stirring laden plotline.
.
💥 Overall, it's a compelling depiction of the experiences faced in real life by the innocent lives, that will linger throughout the minds of generations that follow. A story that will remember those who bravely battled until the end.

"The Life of Tolka," written by Dr. Nitin Chopra and Dr. Niveditha Preeth, is a powerful memoir recounting Nitin's (nicknamed Tolka) harrowing experience during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. As an Indian medical student living in Kyiv, Tolka finds himself thrust into the heart of the chaos, witnessing the war's devastating impact firsthand. It's not just a personal story, but a gripping tale of war and resilience that resonates with the universal human experience of facing unimaginable hardship.

The book offers a raw and unflinching look at the horrors of war: the constant terror of bombings, the destruction of his beloved city, the heartbreak of witnessing suffering and loss. It chronicles Tolka's desperate struggle for survival as he navigates the dangerous reality of a war-torn nation, seeking refuge and ultimately escape. With his city under attack, Tolka has no choice but to flee. He embarks on a dangerous odyssey, navigating border crossings, crowded trains, and the uncertainty of the unknown.

The author deftly examines the effects of war on people mentalities, providing lively portraits of what it does to individuals and their relationships. Tolka's internal peace is reflected in his quest to survive, which adds another layer of complexity and richness to the story. The novel skillfully combines action with reflection, so that the reader can identify intimately with these characters. The journey of Tolka is fraught with physical and emotional challenges, testing his resilience and resourcefulness.

Beyond the physical dangers, this book also delves into the emotional toll the war takes on Tolka. He grapples with loss, fear, and uncertainty, questioning his sense of belonging and identity. But amidst the darkness, the book also shines a light on resilience and hope. Tolka finds strength in his connections with family and friends, discovering the power of human kindness and solidarity in the face of adversity. Weaving themes of toughness, friendship and the search for self into its plot, it is both multi-layered in structure and thought provoking

Though it is set in a certain geopolitical frame of reference, the book ponders universal themes that anyone can enjoy. The pacing is well done, and readers are kept on the edge of their seats until the end. The novel's sentimental ending will linger long in the mind, causing one to reflect on just how great an impact war has left upon human hearts. The author's vivid descriptions make the devastated landscapes come alive, drawing readers into the hard realities of life during wartime.

In conclusion it is more than just a war memoir; it's a testament to the human spirit and the extraordinary capacity for resilience in the face of adversity. It's a story that will stay with you long after you turn the last page. If you're interested in learning more about the 2022 Ukrainian invasion, the human impact of war, or simply a story of resilience and hope, "The Life of Tolka" is a must-read.

Title: The Life of Tolka
Author: Nitin Chopra
Format: Paperback
Genre: Memoir, War Narrative

A poignant odyssey through resilience and hope in the face of unthinkable adversity, "The Life of Tolka" by Nitin Chopra is a must-read for anyone seeking an unflinching portrayal of the human spirit's strength in the darkest of times.

What I liked:

Raw and Unflinching: Chopra's narrative doesn't shy away from the brutal realities of war. He vividly depicts the devastation, fear, and loss brought on by the Ukrainian invasion, immersing readers in the harrowing experiences of his protagonist, Tolka, an Indian medical student caught in the crossfire.
Compelling Character Arc: The journey of Tolka from carefree student to war survivor is deeply gripping. We witness his transformation, his moments of despair intertwined with acts of remarkable courage and compassion. His evolution feels true to life, leaving a lasting impression.
Power of Community: The book eloquently highlights the importance of human connection in times of crisis. The bonds formed amidst the chaos, the acts of selflessness, and the unwavering support of friends and strangers remind us of the inherent goodness that endures even in the bleakest scenarios.
Vivid Prose: Chopra's writing is evocative and powerful. He captures the sights, sounds, and smells of wartime with heartbreaking clarity, drawing readers into the heart of the action and the emotional turmoil of the characters.

Possible improvements:

Pacing could benefit from some tightening, particularly in the middle section, where certain moments might feel drawn out.
While the focus on Tolka's personal journey is impactful, exploring the perspectives of other characters, such as Ukrainian civilians or fellow refugees, could have added further depth and dimension to the narrative.

Verdict:

"The Life of Tolka" is a powerful and unforgettable tribute to resilience, hope, and the enduring power of the human spirit. It is a challenging but deeply rewarding read, not just for those interested in war narratives, but for anyone seeking a reminder of the strength we can find within ourselves and in the connections we forge with others, even in the face of unimaginable darkness.

Rating: 4.5/5

An intense and captivating book, The Life of Tolka gives a terrifying story of the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, which transformed the hitherto tranquil country into a war zone that was destroyed by missiles and gunfire.

The protagonist is a medical student from India who has strong ties to his second nation, Ukraine. His world falls apart as the conflict rages, and he is compelled to leave the nation in order to protect himself. The book chronicles his struggle for survival against unfathomable evils as he makes his way through a world ravaged by devastation and death.

The narrative is profound and grave given that it depicts the destruction caused by war, the incalculable toll it takes on lives, and the permanent damage that survivors face.

The portrayal of the people's will to live in spite of their circumstances and to remain human brought back memories of my own experiences when for the first time I had encountered the frailty of human life and the ugliness of violence against humanity.

I had been quite near to both 2006 Mumbai train explosions and the 26/11 attacks. The catastrophes came upon us when the people were just going about their routine, secure lives and suddenly the city was struck breaking its very core, which left us all shaken and horrified. I had shared my perplexity, hurt, and anxiety with thousands of fellow mumbaikars at the time. For all of us commuting back from our work, at that point, going back to the comforts of our homes felt like a distant dream.

Even though I was fortunate enough to not lose a loved one, the tragedy and grief that surrounded the city where I was born and grown up had caused me great anguish that is still fresh in my memories. As a result, I was able to fully relate to the author's sentiments and psychological state in the depiction of the trauma caused due to battle and destruction he witnessed.

The Life of Tolka is a profound book that stays with you long after you've finished reading it. It's a compelling tale that will captivate your heart and transform you irrevocably, and it's a must-read tribute to the human spirit.

⏩ Do you watch or read books based on real life events?

📌 The Life of Tolka by Niveditha Preeth and Nitin Chopra is heartbreaking, brutally honest and an emotional read.

📌 Just think about it for a second, that you woke up and you're in a completely different world where you don't have your loved ones, home, food, nothing but yourself alone in a completely strange world.

📌 The terror that runs through your veins will ahook you, doesn't it just to think about it? But then you woke up and realised, it was a nightmare, and you took a long breath of relief.

📌 But what happened when you're really living your nightmare?

📌 That happened with Nitin, a Ukraine-based Indian medical student – Tolka Nitin, who lives this nightmare with his heartbeat at highest speed throughout this book.

📌 We all know about the Russian-Ukraine-War.

📌 It was so devastating to watch that horror on pictures and videos. Just think about the people, who live in that territory.

📌 These book revolves around Nitin's efforts to keep himself safe from the Russian bombs and arms to reach his family in India, but at the same time he watched the horror of inhumanity unfold infront of his eye and how people are losing everything in seconds, at the same time remembering his old times when he stepped in Kyiv, where he was excited to explore the new world.

📌 The one part, where my heart broke like millions of times, when he was to leave his pet. – We as humans know, how to protect ourselves, but what about pets? I really had tears in my eyes, just to think about that.

📌 He leaves his pets behind, where they will be alive or not. No one has a slight idea.

📌 The images in black and white mirror the tragedies in purest form.

📌 How the war actually happened and how badly it effect explained in most honestly , brutally way.

📌 I loved every bit of it, because while news channels and portals focused on damages, this book focuses on the tragedy that happened with people, and most importantly mutes innocent animals also.

📌 Go for it! You will love every bit of it! You will feel the pain, love and heartache.

Genre: Autobiography

My Ratings: 5/5⭐️

My review- This book revolves around Ukraine Russia war, horrors of invasion, transformation of peaceful heaven into battleground, fear, hopelessness, starvation, devastation and death. We’re all familiar with the Ukraine Russia war but majority of us are not aware about the situation of students during this tragic period. The plot line revolves around the protagonist Tolka, Ukraine based Indian medical student who experienced the Ukrainian invasion of 2022. The readers can easily connect with the roller coaster of emotions that the protagonist went through during the war. Every chapter starts with a picture and quotations which makes it even more heart touching. This book is truly a powerful reminder to value peace and resilience. The author has beautifully portrayed humanity dying at one end and reviving at the other end. It’s a gripping story with a constant fear of witnessing something more soul shattering. The book ends by leaving a few blank pages at the end and I feel that the author did it on purpose in order to symbolise the silence in the aftermath of war. The plot line makes us realise the importance of each and every memory we make in our lifetime and how to cherish them wholeheartedly. The battleground is portrayed really well by the authors and it is not exaggerated. This book is a personal account of author being in Ukraine at the time of war. It is a must read and I highly recommend everyone to read this book.

Favourite lines: 1. Those who stand tall in the face of adversities are no less than warriors who have won the constant battle of life.
2. All I have is memories, and all they do is haunt me.
3. Nothing is more precious than peace. Peace is the most basic starting point of human advancement.
4. War not only takes lives, but also hope, positivity and innocence of the survivors.

"The Life of Tolka" is a tragic assortment of horrendous encounters looked by an Indian clinical understudy in Ukraine while Russia attempted to attack Ukraine. In the event that we investigate history each time a conflict occurs, it just purposes obliteration and no movement. At the point when certain individuals are inflexible for brilliance and power, the ordinary citizens is passed on to bear every one of the sufferings and escape to at least same their own lives leaving his old neighbourhood and all that which has a place with him behind.

The book comprises of 20 parts and a unique segment for the journalists. Each section proceeds with the biography of Tolka, the issues he has confronted and the seemingly insignificant details that have never allowed him to surrender! Each section is followed up by a delightful and significant statement by an extraordinary individual and that is perhaps of the best part that I cherished about this book.

The story starts with the principal section where, the essayist encounters a horrible bad dream that panics him out. Realizing it to be a bad dream, when he quiets himself down, he unexpectedly hears a boisterous blast that shakes each glass of his windows providing him with a sensation of dread. The sound was only the sign of the beginning of the deadly conflict, that has removed a great many lives, breaking people and their homes into puddles of blood and flesh.

The consideration of Nitin's pets, Kitty and Penny, adds a contacting layer to the story, stressing the general subject of friendship and comfort even in the most obscure of times. The harmonious connection among Nitin and his creature partners fills in as an impactful similitude for the persevering through bonds that give solace in the midst of strife.

The creators' capacity to dive into the recollections of survivors adds profundity to the story, underscoring the strength of the people who persevered. The book not just fills in as a reflection on previous occasions yet in addition reverberates with contemporary struggles, like the continuous conflict among Israel and Palestine.
