Not everyone falls during an apocalypse. Some rise to the occasion.
For Fool and Jackal, the System Apocalypse was a chance to start again. A chance to rise, and be who they were meant to be.
Now, they're trying to offer others the same opportunities as part of a secret organization helping humanity survive the System.
Today's mission? Nothing big, just your typical save-the-princess quest.
But when you're the Acolyte of a Trickster god, typical is the last thing you should expect.
Just ask Fool's cat.
Fool's Play is the first book in a new series in the System Apocalypse universe. Written by David R. Packer in Tao Wong's bestselling post-apocalyptic LitRPG universe, System Apocalypse: Kismet follows a different path through a post-apocalyptic world, one of hope, redemption, and second chances.

An acolyte of the Trickster is definitely a unique class
And Fool is a unique guy so it fits, with his best friend Jackal by his side, they are working for an organization called the Foundation. An organization with lofty goals and a secret base in the mountains gear. The current mission has them using a brand new tracking device to track their next possible member of the foundation. And Earth is no longer a friendly place but a dungeon world that is full of danger and deadly creatures. And if there aren’t enough the System will teleport in more as it only cares about churning mana. And don’t forget the aliens, most are looking to exploit earth and its people. Fool and Jackal are a unique team and Fool hasn’t even been using his System given Skills due to his lingering mental illness. Read on and see how an acolyte of the Trickster god of legends handles a post-apocalypse world.
Fools Play is supposed to be the first book in a new series which is part of the systeem apocalypse universe. The only thing is, I must have missed something, because this one just kind of dumps you into the middle of a story with no context as to where it came from. I've read all of the system apocalypse offshoots (as far as I know), and either these characters were minor characters that showed up once or twice elsewhere, or they never showed up at all, then to have them show up here fully fledged out, with no back story is a bit confusing. Once you get past that though, (plus the character with the ridiculous name of Fool), it all begins to pan out into quite an interesting story, and while I'm not interested in reading more in this particular branch of the universe at this point, it does make me want to figure out what I missed, to try to find these characters if there are other books they appeared in. For the most part, I'm not a fan of the two main characters in this book, so if there are other books with them as main characters, I'm not sure I'd read them anyway, (who am I kidding, of course I will), but since I really enjoy this universe, I'll likely read more books in this series eventually.
Fool's Play brings a new viewpoint, a new storyline to the System Apocalypse world. Rather than an overpowered main character due to chance or rage, Fool and Jackal represent a different kind of strength, a different kind of story.
It was a pleasure working with David to flesh out his story, to fit it into the System Apocalypse universe and also to flesh out some of the parts of the world that we only glimpse when John (the protagonist of the original System Apocalypse series) breezes through, saving the world and wrecking bad guys without a care about the aftereffects.
But someone has to pick up the pieces and put things together, and that's the story in Kismet.
Earth after the Apocalypse has something new. Instead of governments now everyone is connected to a System. The System manages the growth and the powers any individual can have. It has introduced real monsters to earth and the main character "The Fool" is just trying to live through it. He and Jackal are sent on a mission to recover a Princess. This introduces the powers and the system to everyone. Great story and great introduction. The Fool and Jackal make for cool characters.
The fool is a interesting character. Definitely not a typical powerhouse, kill everyone in sight. Can not wait to see how he uses his power going forward.
Heard the audiobook of it on Fool's Play on bookfunnel and it was rather enjoyable with Michael Norman Johnson as the narrator. I look forward to the future adventures of Fool and Jackal. Awesome job.
Recommended for all readers of LitRPG, especially for those that get bored with endless grinding. An interesting use of characterisation. And a sympathetic look at human trickster interaction.
