A young man from Earth struggles to survive in a fantastical realm of blood, battles, and berserkers as the action-packed LitRPG series continues.
When young Victor Sandoval was snatched from his abuela ’s home and thrust into a brutal existence as a pit fighter in the land of Fanwath, it took a long time—and a heck of a lot of acquired skills and levels—to survive and become a formidable warrior with anger issues to spare. And now he seems to be right back at the bottom of the barrel.
Heaved through a portal while defeating a particularly obnoxious pyromancer, Victor and his companion, Valla, find themselves on a new planet populated by serpentines, insectoids, and giants so far beyond the pair in might and experience as to be nigh invulnerable. If the warriors are to withstand this dangerous realm, they’ll have to endure countless tribulations to build up their own strength.
Once again, Victor must hack and hew his way to victory in the arena for a devious warlord, while Valla must honor an unwanted duel against a seemingly unbeatable opponent. And both will have to score more kills, collect more treasure, and face more horrors beyond their wildest imagination if they ever hope to return to Fanwath . . .
Plum Parrot is the pen name of author MC Gallup, who grew up in Southern Arizona and spent much of his youth wandering around the Sonoran Desert, hunting imaginary monsters and building forts. He studied creative writing at the University of Arizona and, for a number of years, attempted to teach middle schoolers to love literature and write their own stories. If he's not out walking his Airedale Terrier, you can find Gallup writing, reading his favorite authors, or playing D&D with friends and family.
It is clear that Conan the barbarian heavily inspired this book, from the magic in the world to setting to the combat it’s a great homage to the work of Robert Howard
Victor must chase his tormentor to another world to rescue Valla
As Victor gains levels and power on Fanwath, he seems to be unstoppable for many of his enemies, but on a new world he won’t be the biggest and baddest around at all. He becomes a passing fancy as the powerful people of the new world use Victor and Valla in their own schemes. As they make a new friend on this world, Victor learns that he is many tiers too low to challenge this worlds powerful as he and Valla are manipulated in the city leader’s schemes. They learn the troubling history of this new world and city and they much now fear and avoid Bloodline theft, which they would not survive. Can they grow in power enough to survive? Maybe find a powerful patron or friend to look out for them? Or will they just stumble through this adventure and pray luck carries them home? Or maybe Victor will need to enter the arenas to find their way back to Fanwath? Victor has traveled twice to different worlds, maybe he can get back to Earth and his abuela.
I read this on Royal Road. I continue to enjoy the series as good, clean LitRPG fun. The author does a great job of mixing action with character development with system mechanics and it all comes together as a fun, enjoyable read.
Beautiful and brilliant story and MC.... The emotional biplay, story and everything has such emotional and layered depth.. Highly recommend JD Glasscock Author of the Series Blood Brothers and the Dream
I thoroughly enjoyed this book Excellent trio of characters, and one of them is a… No spoilers. Want to see this trio continue in further books. A story was fast paced and extremely enjoyable. The three main characters were likable, and you actually care about them. The main character is showing some growth as the story progresses. Will read the next book and if you have not read the series, do so. Didn’t care for the first book as much but the series has grown on me, excellent.
I don't only read on kindle, but my kindle stats had me at almost 200 books last year. I read a lot. So I hope this carries some weight for any who read it. This is perhaps the best book I've read in the last year and a half. An absolute treasure.
Book 1 was good. Book 2 was a mess. Book 3, soso. Book 4? Oh my god. SO GOOD!! The author started using tools he should have been using from the beginning (even if only in small amounts). The big one was switching the pov. This can get very tiring if overdone, especially with whole chapters dedicated to it. But in small amounts, it's such a game changer, at least for me.
Parrot, you are kicking so much butt, keep it coming!
Yeap. Can't say enough good things about the series. From book 1 to now, a steady, consistent, level of quality throughout. Characters have depth, battles have value, and there are levels of plot that are just engaging. Please read, I know you will enjoy them.
Can't wait for the next book. This is by far one of my favorite book series. Great character, adversity, and most of all, LITRPG. If you haven't already picked this, you need to.
This book expanded the universe a lot more showing us what to expect in the future. As well providing much more action and progression like the first 2. Seems like a series that could go for more than 10 books based on what was shown here.
Love the series and this is an excellent addition to it. It introduces some exciting new characters and a separate story line that I'm sure we will be seeing in a future book.
Primal Hunter, Defiance of the Fall, and Randidly Ghosthound are all the stories I enjoy, but none of them really stand up to this series. I can't wait to read next volume.
Continuously surprised by the character developments I feel like it really flows and the new characters being introduced are amazing can’t wait for mor
I liked the first book in this series and the series has just grown and grown, and accumulated to an epic in this fourth book. I’m looking forward to the next one that’s put (hopefully it isn’t too long of a wait ;) ) 100 💯 recommend
These are good fun, but Victor always starts each book as a cocky idiot and learns restraint by the end. Can he not just start with a bit of restraint? It’s like Groundhog Day here.
This series continues to grow in strength, along side its MC (Victor), in the fourth book. A side quest to another world, one with exponentially more powerful new foes and an even more powerful new ally.
Victor and Vala find themselves on another world and must navigate a much older world, their more developed magical knowledge, and older and more powerful foes to grow in power, in knowledge, and to escape back to Fanwath and their friends and obligations on that world.
Characters are a strong suit in this story, with one glaring issue though. Victor’s motivations are becoming more apparent as his personality and character growth evolve on the page. The primary side characters of this series are all pretty great, being well-fleshed out with diverse personalities and motivations. They are not all cut-out sycophants to the MC, they have their own agendas, and through their shared experiences with the MC, come to trust, depend upon, and want to follow him. My only issue is the primary side characters, being followers of Victor in his adventures, are, to a person, all single women. Now, he’s yet to have a physical relationship with a single one of them. Annoying and unrealistic as that may be, it is a trope in the genre. I don’t understand why everyone one of these women isn’t interested in a fling or casual relationship. I understand there are many women who would feel like that, but every single one in this story? In a world where people can live for centuries, I would think at least some of them could learn to live in the moment and not worry about Victor’s uncertain future. But mainly my issue with this pillar of the genre is not having a single, truly close male friend. At this point it is getting bizarre.
World building and magical system. The world building expands in this book as we add lore to the many worlds in this literary universe and the wide variation of species, powers, and knowledge out there. The magical system is one of the best I’ve ever read. It isn’t too heavy, with overpowered gods or whatever and the bacterium at the bottom. Individuals can’t have countless spells and affinities and what not. It boils down to race levels, cultivation core levels, power levels, affinities (no one with more than four yet in this series), and the spells that come with those affinities. What’s so imaginative and makes this system so versatile are that one can use different spells on different affinities to create different effects.
The plots so far have basically seen Victor go from situation to situation, that’s not amazing, it’s pretty common as a trope, but it’s done well and leads to the next pillar, the payoffs. Those are mostly satisfying. Sometimes Victor shows mercy maybe when we’d prefer he didn’t, but it plays into his character growth and ultimately adds to the series.
In summary, this series is going hard, and it’s solid foundations in the pillars of this genre have created a playground where our imaginative author can take us along for what has so far been a very satisfying journey. I look forward to more.
Omg series this story is as bad as the movie dumb and dumber. The mc being the dumb and his female companion being the dumber as she is almost always asking stuff that is clearly obvious. The mc is most of the time an absolute imbecile and can't even begin to speak without any kind of cursing. It's crazy how he talks about grandmother but truth be told if she were important to him he would never be so filled with a vocabulary as ugly or empty headed as his was. The plot is so slow and it takes forever to get anywhere I almost gave up a few times but I pushed through .
Here's where spells (and bloodlines, core levels and other such variants of spells) take over. His rage starts to have some control also. Sameal sameal in the D&D world..
Thrust into a world of stronger beings, Victor is no longer the apex predator. Each book keeps you wanting more. The story continues to progress with no worry of running out of adventure! Keep them coming!
Great addition to the series. Also the narrator on the audiobook did a fantastic job pulling off the different personalities that Victor has when he uses his powers.
