कुछ दिनों पहले इस कहानी की चर्चा यहीं फेस बुक पर सुनी थी और तब से मन लालायित था इसे पढ़ने के लिए। उन चर्चाओं मे इसे पिछले 10-15 सालों मे आई सर्वश्रेस्ठ कहानी का रुतबा दिया गया था जिसके कई विदेशी भाषाओं मे अनुवाद हो चुके थे। तमाम मंचो से ये पुरस्कृत रचना बताई जाती थी।
मैंने लैंडमार्क, वसंत कुंज से इस कहानी को खरीदा और देख कर ये पाया की ये कलेवर मे किसी उपन्यास से कम नहीं थी। हालांकि इसके लेखक श्री उदय प्रकाश इसके उपन्यास होने से इंकार करते हैं और इसे लॉन्ग शॉर्ट स्टोरी या नोवेला कहते हैं।
श्री उदय प्रकाश हिन्दी साहित्य जगत मे काफी चर्चित नाम हैं। जेएनयू से शोध किया और वहीं पढ़ाया भी। काफी पत्र पत्रिकाओं से जुड़ाव रहा है। मोहन दास इनकी एक अन्य चर्चित कृति रही है। फिलहाल वसुंधरा गाज़ियाबाद इन का निवास स्थान है और फेस बुक पर खूब लिखते हैं। उनको आप भी फॉलो कर सकते हैं, फ्रेंड बनाने की सीमा वे पार कर चुके।
पीली छतरी वाली लड़की, इस कहानी को पढ़ने के बाद मुझे अहसास हुआ की साहित्य और मनोरंजन मे क्या फर्क है। कला क्या होती है, साहित्य कला क्यों है, और ये अलग कैसे है? पहली बार कोई ऐसी कहानी पढ़ी जिसे मैं लगातार पढ़ने मे असमर्थ था, कुछ ही पेज पढ़ने के बाद मैं कहानी आगे पढ़ नहीं पाता था और बहुत कुछ सोचने पर विवश हो जाता था। पहली बार समझ मे आया की साहित्य कोई कहानी कोई उपन्यास नहीं है। ये कहानी कहने की कला नहीं है। ये शब्दो का जाल नहीं है। कैसे कोई कहानी आपके दिल मे उतरती चली जाती है। तब जबकि आप जानते हैं समझते हैं की कहानी काही नहीं जा रही है आपसे लेखक का संवाद चल रहा है। आप ऐसे सच के सामने खड़े किए जा रहे हैं जिनसे आप या तो दूर ही रहते हैं या निगाह फिरा लेते हैं। कभी सुनते थे हार्ड हिटटिंग सिनेमा, ये कहानी कहीं ज्यादा ज़ोर से हिट करती है। एक अदना सी प्रेम कहानी मे हिले मिले इतने सुर हैं, इतनी सच्चाई, इतने कटु जीवन के अनुभव हैं की आत्मा तक महसूस कर सकती है।
कहानी पढ़ना चाहेंगे तो उसमे कोई दम नहीं है, इससे बेहतर प्रेम कहानी तो किसी भी मसाला हिन्दी फिल्म मे मिल जाएगी लेकिन उस कहानी को बयान करती वो शब्दो की लड़ियाँ, जैसे कविता रची जा रही हो, मुग्ध कर देती हैं। प्रेम के पलों का ऐसा सजीव वर्णन मैंने पहले कभी महसूस नहीं किया।
लेकिन इस कहानी की असली जान इसके लेखक का कहानी के साथ साथ दिया गया दर्शन है जो कितनी कठोर सच्चाई से अवगत कराता है। आज की राजनीति के कुछ ऐसे पहलुओं से परिचित कराता है जिससे आप अंजान तो नहीं है, पर भ्रमित जरूर हो सकते हैं। ये कहानी अनिवार्य रूप से उनके लिए हैं जो मानवता को महसूस करते हैं। जो खुद नफरत के शिकार हैं, वो प्रेम मे लिपटी इस कहानी को नहीं समझ पाएंगे।
मेरा उन सभी मित्रो से निवेदन है जो मानव मूल्यों मे विश्वास करते हैं वे जरूर इस कहानी को पढ़ें, वाणी प्रकाशन से उपलब्ध ये पुस्तक 125 रुपए मूल्य की है। इसे पढ़ने मे मुझे काफी दिन लग गए और शायद सबसे ज्यादा समय मुझे इसी कहानी को पढ़ने मे लगा।

Peeli Chhatri Wali Ladki is a strong indictment of the pervasive and blatant dominance of so the called 'uppermost caste' in Indian society. Be it education, arts, literature, government jobs, politics etc, their influence is absolute and tyrannical.
The book may be labelled scurrilous and reactionary by the exponents of the new virus creeping across India in the guise of Hindutva, but that is debatable. It is this debate that is missing now from the ethos of Indian society. I do not like to identified by my "upper" caste, gender, language or State, I am an Indian and I would love to hear the viewpoint of the 'others' - Adivasis, folk from the North-east, Kashmir, from other religions. Let us debate, debate noisily, but let's not permit intolerance to creep into our discourse.
A time of ferment and student unrest in a typical Indian University is threaded by a simple and sweet love story that is maligned and poisoned by toxic influences of caste, religion, parochialism, nepotism and corruption.
The nonchalant anglicised Hindustani is a pleasure to read. The novelette was an eyeopener to the vast unread contemporary Hindi literature!

This book is much more about other things that happens in college & hostel, interaction of students with people outside their college and caste issues in hindi department(in this book) that Rahul faces than peeli chhatri wali ladki(Anjali).

I want to preference my star rating by acknowledging that I read the English translation of this book, and I know a lot gets lost in translation. Additionally, I don’t know a lot about Indian culture, so a lot of the references and nuances were completely lost on me. However, I think this book was trying to do too many things at once and I’m too little of time/pages. This was a love story, this was a social commentary, this was poetry (for the record, I also hated Romeo and Juliet, which was the western equivalent of this story). There were too many characters who didn’t have enough context for me to keep them straight—10 characters were introduced at a time, and then one or two names would have an actual part of the story line for a half page, and then that process would repeat with 10 new characters, and two or three would have a purpose, wash/rinse/repeat. I liked the end-no spoilers. It felt as though it brought together the reality of the hot-mess that was the whole first 99% of the book. I would not read this again, and I would not recommend it, unless someone absolutely loves the dumpster fire that was Romeo and Juliet, then I would say maybe read this.

While I mostly agreed with its politics, this Uday Prakash novel was an underwhelming experience overall. The novel can be a carrier of essayistic and rhetorical flourishes, but to shed Aristotelian 'necessity' and 'probability' for those flourishes is insupportable. This one was very clear about what it wanted to say and very careless about how it created the pretext for saying those things.

पीली छतरी वाली लड़की शीर्षक देखने से तो यही लगता है कि ये एक प्रेम कथा होगी। पर अगर मैं इस दृष्टि से इस लंबी कहानी (लेखक उदयप्रकाश इसे लघु उपन्यास के बजाए इसी नाम से पुकारे जाने के पक्षधर हैं।) का मूल्यांकन करूँ तो इस पुस्तक के नायक राहुल व नायिका अंजली जोशी के प्यार की दास्तां किसी कॉलेज की प्रेम कहानियों सरीखी लगेगी। मैं तो इसे पढ़ने के बाद पुस्तक को इस श्रेणी में डालना भी नहीं चाहता। इसे पढ़ने के बाद जो बातें मन पर गहरे असर करती हैं वो राहुल अंजली का प्रेम हरगिज़ नहीं है। दरअसल लेखक ने इस कहानी में प्रेम का ताना बाना इसीलिए बुना है कि इसके ज़रिए वो उन मुद्दों को उठा सकें जिन्होंने उनके अब तक के लेखकीय जीवन को अंदर तक झिंझोड़ा है। पुस्तक में नायक के माध्यम से कहे गए ये विचार, पीछे चलती प्रेम कथा से ज्यादा दिलचस्प और असरदार लगते हैं।

इस कथा को उदय प्रकाश ने लघु कथा कहा है। शीर्षक से यह एक साधरण रोमानियत भरी प्रेम कहानी लगती है लेकिन किताब पढ़ने के बाद यह कथा आपके भीतर सैकड़ो सवाल पैदा करती है। यह सामजिक व्यवस्था, समाज में चली आ रही जाति व्यवस्था जो कि शिक्षण क्षेत्र को भी दीमक की तरह खाये जा रही है, राष्ट्रीयता, संस्थागत राजनीति आदी अनेक विषयों पर प्रश्न करती है। लेखक ने नायक राहुल तथा उसके साथी चरित्रों के माध्यम से यह सवाल उठाये हैं।

Admittedly, this is one time where I feel like reading the english translation probably overall does the novel a great disservice. There's a lot left up to interpretation when literature gets translated and I feel as though lots of the nuance and deeper meanings didn't come across the same as in the original language. Regardless, despite being primarily marketed as a love story, the plot encompassed so much more that the romance seemed very back burner to more important and interesting topics of conversation. A lot was said in terms of class and caste in a university setting and I'm glad the focus was on social issues as opposed to a reductive guy gets the girl story. It explores what really is Indian literature, how the voices of the upper caste are predominate in every sector, how difficult it is to really know what marginalized voices have to say. The questions raised by the author left me thinking a lot about intention in a way that makes me want to seek out more information and voices to illuminate the thought processes behind these ideas.

इस किताब को मैं 4 स्टार्स देना चाहता था, लेकिन आखिरी के कुछ पन्नों ने मेरा इरादा बदल दिया। किताब के आखिरी पन्ने ऐसे भरे गये हैं मानो की लेखक को किताब खत्म करने की जल्दी हो, उसे अब तक कहे गये कहानी का सार समझ ना आ रहा हो और जल्दबाजी में उसे जो भी सुझा उसीसे किताब का अंत लिखा गया।
किताब की शुरुआत काफी अच्छी रही, जिससे एक अच्छे अंत की आशा बंध सी जाती है, इसलिए पूरी पढ़ने पर थोड़ी सी निराशा होती है। किताब की कहानी एक लड़के और लड़की की प्रेम कहानी है जोकि एक अत्यंत भ्रष्ट कॉलेज और भ्रष्ट समाज की पृष्ठभूमि पर लिखी गई है। समाज में व्याप्त कुरीतियों जैसे जाति–धर्म, भ्रष्टाचार, चाटुकारिता, गुंडागर्दी इत्यादि पर तीखा प्रहार है इस कहानी में, जिसके साथ साथ एक प्रेम कहानी पनपती रहती है जो इन सारी कुरीतियों से घिरी होते हुऐ भी अपने चरम पर पहुंचती है।
कुल मिलाकर एक बार पढ़ी जाने वाली किताब है। एक साधारण सी, जिसमे एक्स्ट्रा आर्डिनरी जैसा अगर शायद कुछ है तो वो इसका अकस्मात अंत, जो शायद एक नजरिए से पसंद भी किया जा सकता हो, लेकिन मेरे नजरिए से एक अच्छी कहानी का एक अधूरा अंत।

यह उपन्यास कॉलेज में युवाओं के संवेदनशील चिंतन को दिलचस्प अंदाज़ में पेश करता है (अक्सर ये राहुल और अंजली करण जौहर द्वारा निर्मित कॉलेज के पॉप कल्चर में नहीं मिलते)। जाति के आसपास लिखी ये कहानी हमें टीवी और अखबारों पर संदेह से देखने को मजबूर करती है। हिंदी साहित्य के बारे में जो सवाल खड़े किए जाते हैं, ख़ासकर समावेशता से जुड़े हुए, उनसे परेशान होकर मैंने भी ख़ुद को हिंदी से दूर कर लिया था, साल में मुश्किल से दस प्रति शत हिंदी में होती हैं। पर इस तरह की मल्टीलिंगुअल किताब क्या उस समस्या का समाधान है? पता नहीं। हालाँकि मुझे अंजली का पात्र कैरीकेचर लगा, शायद इसलिए भी क्योंकि कहानी राहुल के नज़रिए को केंद्र में रखती है। कई बार कहानी में जाति और नस्ल की राजनीति पर मोनोलॉग्स आते हैं, जिनकी जानकारी इंटरेस्टिंग है पर वो जानकारी ही लगती है। अंत एक तरह से सुखद है, पर उसको पढ़कर बेचैनी ख़त्म नहीं होती, रेसोल्यूशन कृत्रिम ही लगता है।

अगर आप एक ऐसे पाठक हैं जो लेखक की दुनिया देखने के लिए उत्सुक रहते हैं और लेखक की रचनात्मकता(creativity) की पराकाष्ठा (limit) को अक्सर ढूंढने की कोशिश करते हैं तो इस उपन्यास को ढूंढ कर पढ़िए...मुझे नहीं पता की मैं इस किताब का ठीक ठाक review कर पाऊंगा , हां मगर आपको कुछ किताबें पढ़ने के बाद ऐसा लगता है की लेखक ने कुछ बहुत निज लिख दिया है, जिससे आप स्तब्ध रह गए हैं तो उदय प्रकाश जी की यह कहानी(उपन्यास) आपके लिए हैं....

This book can be read if you want to know what kind of books one shouldn't read. The author appears to have quite a bias on the left side of ideology and has some deep hatred towards a particular section of society. The story is run of the mill, something that's been told a million times in movies, and a billion times in roadside novels. Language appears borrowed and filled with some totally unrelated metaphors.

It is not a bad book. But I have problem with some description or if I say more appropriately, the thinking pattern of males here. Nonetheless, it definitely talks about important topics and goon rulers. This is also about college life, love story, power, poor and rich struggle. The title of the book is misleading, It has more than what meets the eye. The starting is average but picks up the pace in the middle.

Even a one star rating is too much for a book like this. Deeply regressive. Homophobic, sexist, casteist, racist, and what not! If you have read this book by mistake like I did. Please don't learn anything from it's lead character.

I was looking forward to this one because it was the first novel of Uday Pradash that I got to read after two volumes of short stories that I kind of liked. I didn't love this novel because for my taste it was a bit to coming of agey and Romeo and Juliety, but it made an entertaining read.

This book expresses a deep-rooted anger against the system, society and even literature. This anger has been beautifully weaved into words. However, more importantly, hidden behind this anger is a voice or, more appropriately, a vision of the marginalised. In an ever glowing India, it has been taken for granted that certain sections of our society shall be neglected, suppressed and marginalised. In many ways, the book tries to capture the aspirations of these sections of our society. And I believe that it is only through anger that this vision of the marginalized could have been translated into words.
The book also inculcates many songs in its narration to capture the mood of its characters. When I read those songs, I yearned for a better quality prose. A prose that could have captured the imagination of its characters with its own lyrical quality. A prose that was not depended upon borrowed songs, in order to, present the ideas of its characters.
The book discusses many issues, raises many questions and expresses deep-rooted anger. However, I am intrigued by one of the questions it doesn't raise directly but is implicitly present throughout its narrative. The question is
What is Indian Literature?
Is it the kind of 'literary masterpieces' written by writers who belong to a certain elitist class of our society and are mostly living in foreign countries ?(Salman Rushdie, Amitav Ghosh)
Or
Is it the kind of rapidly produced books (trash) written by engineering and management graduates? The kind of books that are filled with popular romances, stereotypical characters and extremely bad writing. (Chetan Bhagat, Ravinder Singh, Durjoy Dutta)
Or
Is it the kind of books that are written by writers who themselves belong to a marginalised section of this huge literary world? Writers like Uday Prakash.
The book is also a lamentation about a decaying language. A language that has been afflicted with both casteism as well as consumerism. The casteism will not allow the language to become more modern while the consumerism will not accept something so archaic. Thus, the writer laments the decay of his own language and also struggles for its survival in a modern world.

For higher caste, caste is out of fashion concept. That is no longer a problem, the burning issue of course is ‘reservation quota’ and 'merit'. Aspects of caste practices such as mental isolation, discrimination, violence, stigma, bullying etc. are ignored very conveniently. All of this is possible because the social location of higher caste is at the top of caste hierarchy.
Peeli Chhatri Wali Ladki is a story about caste and its hidden aspects. Its a tender love-story of Rahul and Anjali finding its way in a morbid tale of harassment, institutional failures, and nepotism in higher education. A story set in 1970's or 1980's in Madhya Pradesh doesn't sound of distant past. The dominance and over-representation of higher castes especially Brahmins in academia and every other institutions like media, politics, and police has been depicted in a very stark way in this book. Read the book to understand: How does caste work ? what are the gender norms for Indian women ? How do the privileged behave? How do the minorities cope?
Only book that can be compared with this masterpiece will be Howl. This book doesn't deserve readers who deep down in their heart of hearts truly believe they are superior because they belong to higher caste.

This is a beautiful and fascinating book. It is unlike any other Indian fiction I've read in it's forthright critique of the caste system and inequality in Indian life, education, society. But it's also a terrific novel. A young man, Rahul, is getting a masters in science at a small university where the corruption and caste prejudice infiltrate every aspect of life. He - of course - falls in love with a (beautiful) girl from a higher caste. But what makes this book so special is that it's about the whole culture surrounding them and not just their love story.
Will look for other books by this author - who I'd never heard of until I picked up this book.

I admire the writing of Uday Prakash very much. This novel dwells upon the hardships of not being a Brahmin student in a university environment in rural India. Unlike the great majority of Indian novels, the family has little importance here. Corruption is always an underlying fact of life in Indian modern literature and this is so in this novel as well. Highly recommended for a different kind of novel.

Haven't read this translation, but giving it a rating based on the Hindi edition, which is fantastic, and wishing that GR would get more Hindi works on here!
