Secret baby story with a twist. The pregnant mom to be had no idea she was pregnant. Worse than that, she has no idea how she ended up pregnant since her last relationship was more than 2 years ago.

(I will put in spoilers at the end)

The h Maisey lives in a cute English cottage that was willed to her from the previous owner who lived in the bigger house on the grounds. She also inherited two dogs, cats, some hens, and a very loud alarm clock known as a cockerel(rooster). Thank goodness she is a veterinarian and can handle this menagerie of animals. The bigger house has undergone renovations for the past year. Our story opens with the new owner(the H) finally moving in. The h and her friend watch as the movers work and the H checks off his clipboard. The h finds the H very attractive, but so does her slimmer, prettier friend. She decides that she isn’t even going to throw her hat in the ring since there is no competing with her friend in the love department.

The Hero, James, we find out later in the story has moved to the countryside from London because he has fond memories of his grandfather here. Between his father dying a year ago, his sister traveling(leaving him with her dog tango), and the death of a romance he was in, he decided that this would make a good change and a fresh start. He isn’t even done moving in when he is visited by two women next door. He finds one of the women to be very much to his liking, especially after she spills lemonade on her shirt making it translucent.

The good news for our readers, is that it is the h who has caught his eye.

The H has his hands full with Tango, who is still in the puppy stage.
He has to work which means Tango is left alone a lot….He leaves her outside and she barks all day. The h being a vet walks over one morning to tell him he needs to be a better pet dad. He takes offense to this and also tells her she needs to do something about the cock(rooster, I feel I need to clarify since this is a romance story) that wakes him up each morning. Needless to say their conversation doesn’t endear one another to each other.

Later, the h needs to see her Dr. As she has been ill for awhile, pain, gaining weight etc..She gets to the office late and the Dr is gone, so the new Dr. Has to see her. Well, guess who the new Dr. Is?

The dear Dr. Is still smarting from their previous conversation, but he is going to try and be professional. The h relays her symptoms, he does a little poking and then tells her quite simply that she is pregnant. She is shocked.

She then tells the Dr. He obviously has no clue what he is doing. She storms off and plans to prove him wrong by getting a pregnancy test. Meanwhile he is thinking maybe the h isn’t quite the wholesome picture she portrays herself to be. He is thinking she probably had some random drunken ons that she forgot about. Although she did seem pretty confused.
Later the H goes home and takes tango for a walk. He comes across the very upset h who confirms that he is right, yet she has no idea when or who she could have been with. Our H gets a little concerned and tries to work out the date of conception based on her last period and her current state of pregnancy(4mos). A lightbulb goes off and she comes to a realization of when it happened.(again I will put in spoilers at the bottom). She actually ends up dealing with her discovery calmly and admirably.

So the rest of the story continues with the following: vet emergencies..horses, dogs, hens etc..some dr related emergencies, and the love story.

We see the thoughts of both the h and H. He wants to kiss her, he wants to take care of her, he wants to be her lover, husband, and father of her child. BUT he feels she needs time to cope with her impending motherhood and so he pulls back. Yet, he is there for her whenever she needs him. He is handsome, caring, strong….

She wants him to kiss her, take care of her, love her, and take her to bed…BUT she knows that he only sees her as a friend. I mean what single attractive guy wants to be saddled with a woman and her child.

He takes her to a friends wedding because his ex gf will be there. All his friends love Maisey, and they dance. Both are very happy to be in each other’s arms. Then the ex and him dance. Jealousy? Bitterness? Nope, not these two. She tells him that she has never seen him look so happy. She herself is newly engaged. So, yeah wow exes that realize they were not meant for each other.

He kisses the h later that night(1 of 3 kisses in the whole book) and then they go back to their respective corners. Later, he becomes her knight in shining armor when he shows up for birthing classes as her partner. Both of them thinking how they wish it were real.

It isn’t until the h goes into early labor that all the truths are told. CA did a great job with these scenes and even instilled some humor. Of course it is up to the Dr. To deliver the baby at his house. A baby girl is born, love avowals are made and then CA gives us an epilogue.

We never see the couple come together. However, based on the last sentence in the epilogue they must have gotten together at least once between the birth of the girl and their wedding. Some nice supporting characters in this, including the animals. Both the hero and heroine are likable. The hero especially as he checks off most of the requirements one wants in a mate.

So now is the time for the big bad spoiler. How does an educated female veterinarian not know she is pregnant or how she got that way? Here we go!

Some of the pluses in the story:
Female veternarian(I got my fix of animals in this one)
Hero is a yummy, caring doctor
The ex gf makes a brief appearance and she is not a witch
The secret baby trope was totally twisted in this one
Great wrap up to the story with funny moments

4 Stars ~ From the moment country Vet Maisie's eyes locked with her hunky new neighbour James' there were instant sparks. For months, Maisie's felt something's off and when she notices she's gaining weight and having problems with her bladder, she worries about cancer. Late for her doctor's appointment she opts to see the new clinic doctor, and is shocked to discover it's none other than her hunky neighbour. What James diagnoses is not cancer but most certainly life changing and completely impossible. Maisie can't be pregnant, but the home test she does proves it and how did it happen?

I give Ms. Anderson much credit for taking on what would normally be a very devastating discovery. She allows Maisie to go through the shock, anger, fear, repulsion -- every possible emotion that she might experience learning that many months ago someone had drugged and raped her. James helps to Maisie quickly figure out the who and when, and as he is dead, she doesn't have to face any further anguish. She comes to look on her baby as a tremendous gift. The more James sees of Maisie the more he admires her and has to fight his own impulses to protect and cherish her. Maisie takes his arms length approach to mean he's not interested, and she secretly wishes he'd come to love her as much as she loves him.

I've come to always expect an emotional love story from Ms. Anderson; one delicately crafted to satisfy my romance crave. While the topic of drugged rape is not a light one, it doesn't dominate this story but allows the strengths of Maisie and James to shine through.

Gentle look at date rape. I particularly liked the scene where the doctor suddenly realizes what he's dealing with and that Maisie is not joking when she says she doesn't know how she got pregnant. The story doesn't spend too much time on the cause of the pregnancy, focusing instead on the budding romance between her, as a vet, and Dr.James.

Just to show how much you can learn from romances, there is a fellow vet who comes down with an inner ear infection, labyrinthitis, that causes fierce dizziness. I had recently read this book when my hubby suddenly got dizzy. Horribly dizzy. I told him to have this checked, and sure enough. It took the better part of a year for him to get back to normal.
