Fogpoint Harbor #1

The Inheritance

Rate this book
The only thing more surprising than learning her great aunt had left her entire very large estate to her was learning Aunt Dot hadn’t passed away when she a little girl like she’d been told. Kat traveled to the coastal town of Fogpoint Harbor for the first time since the lie had been spun with the intention of upholding her end of the will’s demand before returning home.

There were stipulations to the inheritance. She had to live in her aunt’s house for a year. If she didn’t, she walked away with a small percentage of the estate. It would be easy. Wouldn’t it?

The old Victorian house was filled with secrets. As they begin to reveal themselves, Kat wonders if she ever really knew her aunt at all. Then the house begins to communicate through her journal, and a detective arrives at her door needing help to solve a murder.

Who really was her aunt? And, where does that leave Kat?

I thought the story jumped around a lot - then at the end there were so many unanswered questions . Won't read anymore of her books .

This book had an interesting premise, but the writing was disjointed. The main character sees a guy at the end of the driveway and gets dizzy, the next thing they are on a date, and then, suddenly they've gone out a couple of times. It felt like chapters were missing as much as plot development. The quirky supernatural aspect of the house gets pushed aside for face-to-face investigation by an untrained novice and that's supposed to make sense? The family mysteries are barely touched on, despite the good intentions of the main character, and then, suddenly, she reveals that she was adopted. There were other things that didn't make sense, probably because the author jumped around from idea to idea without enough narrative. If she intends to write more books to make this the first in a series, the author needs to join a writers group and get some constructive writing critique to improve her future endeavors.

Good First Book

I only found one typo.
I'd really like to read the rest of the series and learn the answers to all of the questions. The problem is that the rest of the series is only found on Vellum, where the first 3 chapters are free. And the you have to buy the rest of the book one chapter at a time. No thank you. IF the rest of the series ever becomes available on Kindle Unlimmited I will want to read them.

Loved it. Nice mystery that does not end. Enjoyed every page. Can’t wait to see the next mystery unravel soon.

I do not recommend the audiobook, it sounds like it was done by AI, pronouncing certain words in weird ways, it was odd. I enjoyed reading the book though but there were some bits that felt all over the place.

Not a smooth read.

I liked the story, or the premise, but it just seemed to jump around a lot. It seemed Aunt Dot was her mothers Aunt....but then she is her dads Aunt? Typos and grammatical errors added in, it was a tough read for me. I do not think Ill be reading the rest in the series, sadly.

An ok read I guess, could have been better with a good editor or some beta readers. A bit chaotic, too many typos and grammatical mistakes.

Needs work

I was looking forward to this book even though its premise of inheriting, but... is very common. I enjoy the surprises in the old buildings.
However, even the house description was underdeveloped. The characters were mostly names, no developed personalities except the detective. I had to search to find out which grandson was the murderer and most of the mysteries were unsolved. Maggie, her aunt Dot, relationships between Kats mom, Dot, her Dad, the picture with the barn, was the house haunted, what about the caves? Too many things left unresolved after introduction. This made Kats personality pretty boring and when she took to drinking wine alone , out of the bottle, I began to dislike her. Not good for the main character/ heroine.
If this was the beginning of a series, it might be ok, but apparently not.
Quite disappointed.

Good story idea but poorly executed. This is first in a series and because it’s on kindle unlimited I might quickly swipe through the series to find the answers that I was left with at the end of this one. Author needs a better editor. I’m guessing this was self published and most likely a first book. Again I liked the story but the jumping around and leaving things unsaid was very confusing. Especially when she meets Dante. I went back and read that part again because all of a sudden he was her boyfriend.

Spooky old houses always lure me in and the cover for this one was eye catching. Good luck to the author in her future writings. There is a very good story idea here.

I hope Kat finds the answers she needs a little quicker in book 2. She’s a good character but her attention span needs help.

First time reading this author.

This story was not what I expected but I could not stop reading once I started. Kat finds out her Aunt Dot has just passed away when she received the notice of her inheritance of her aunt’s house. She had been told as a child her aunt had passed away many years ago. To receive her inheritance she must live in the house for a year before she can sell it. Once she arrives in town and moves into the house she starts to learn more about her family’s past and she finds she has more questions than answers. She winds up doing the job her aunt did for the local police with help she is not sure where it comes from. Not my usual genre but I did enjoy this and I will read more by this author.

Kat is a complete different character for me. First she is basically lied to by almost everyone near and dear to her about her Great Aunt Dorothy dying when Kat was 8. Suddenly, she gets a letter from a lawyer saying she has inherited a house from Dot because Dot had died only a couple of months ago. That is when the troubles really started shortly after she claimed the house. A busybody old man is killed the next day, and she is told by the local policeman that her Aunt Dot did consulting for the police department and she was welcome to apply as well. The killer was found after Kat was accosted and the strangeness continued. That is another story. I definitely recommend this book.

good read. ...no big hook but kept it moving...thought there would have been a surprise...from the house..something unexpected for her when she was going through things...must be another book coming as it opened up more questions...that is the sign of another book.. yes you should read it...if i was in her book club i would have suggested the house do more..and when she is talking about the witch..either prove it with the witch or ??? looking forward to another book...with a few more surprises.

This book had a lot of potential … a surprising inheritance, a house with a haunted reputation, a mystery to solve, a love interest … it should have been a better reading experiencing! Maybe it’s because my last 36 books were superb and I was expecting too much! Or maybe this one was just poorly written - too slow, too much repeating, and it needed better editing! Also, as the first in the series, the book ended with a lot of unanswered questions. I get that you want to have a familiar thread, but not enough was answered. I won’t be reading the rest of the series.

This was an intriguing book with some very interesting characters. I have not read this author before and I will now look for other books by her.

Good cozy mystery

Easy read. Finished in one sitting. Will read the sequel. The killer was pretty easy to guess but Kat's story is intriguing.

Edited to add apparently there is no sequel and now I’m left with lots of unanswered questions. This dropped my rating to a 3 because the best mystery is still unsolved. The book was less than 250 pages leaving me feel like it was too rushed.

Interesting

I found the story confusing. The author doesn't tie one chapter to the next. The author didn't explain characters as they appear. Example is Frank. He comes out of nowhere and I went back to the beginning to find out who he was. He is in a few paragraphs then disappears again. The ending left me hanging???? Another book or was that the end. Many errors that need to be corrected. Could be a good story if every character and chapter were in sync.

The Aunt who died twice.

An interesting view of inheriting an old house stuffed with boxes and boxes of stuff. Kat, not realky welcomed by the community, arives in Fogpoint to clear out and live in her Aunt's house. An unusual house. The police welcome her and hire her as a consultant. It's all very confusing. As Kat learns more about her family, the town, and the house more questions arise.
Kat is an unlikely heroine. Absolutely have to read the next book!

Interesting Storyline, a lot of missing information

This story has a lot going for it, but as you read you end up going back and rereading attempting to figure out how Kat arrived at certain thoughts and actions. For instance an adoption which has never been mentioned, aside from a random find but says she never read.

Lots of mysteries

Kat doesn't know why she was hired to be a police consultant, but she manages to take the clues that "the house" has given her to solve a murder. Unsolved in the first novel are the mysteries surrounding Kat and.her family. People who were thought to be dead are alive. Hopefully, future novels will have the answers.

Started out interesting despite some spelling mistakes and one mistake in tense. The myteries continued to be interesting, but I ended up skimming the book, because for some reason I found it unreadable. It seemed to wander all over the place.

really disappointed where’s the rest?!

I loved this book and was very into the story the mystery about her Aunt Dot and who the baby was in the photos. Then it ended, no answers this has the feel of a great 3 book series and fell dead I’m sorely disappointed.

An interesting premise bogged down by disjointed writing to to point i couldn't even glean any concrete plot point. The interesting ideas were sidelined in favor of pointless romance and dropped plotlines. Thankfully it was a short read.

The quantity of grammatical errors was distracting. The character development was weak. The story had potential but there was no real climax. Suddenly the tale was over and the ending was rushed and disappointing.

Finesse needed

!multiple under lying stories left unfinished. Several disjointed sentences that are confusing. Similar words ( then/than) used which interrupts the flow of the reader. Repetitive descriptions (house location 3 times)

The premise was interesting enough to keep me reading. However, the book was replete with grammatical errors that should have been flagged with even the most basic software. There were a few plot inconsistencies as well. The ending lacked resolution of the plot lines.

Kat Solves a Mystery

I enjoyed this book with its spooky house and interesting characters.
However the production of this edition contained many typographical errors one just poor grammer. For me it detracted from my enjoyment.

The Inheritance

Curious. Decent premise but poor follow through. Disjointed, confusing, misspelled words, etc. poor word usage. Wrong tense.

Over eighteen only because of subject matter. That all said, I might read the next one...

Good book

The Inheritance is about a woman named Kat and her inheritance. First she gets a lot of money if she stays in her great aunt's house for a year. Plus she gets the house. But maybe she inherited something more. Read the book to find out.

Storyline not cohesive

The story started with interesting premise but as it progressed towards the end it became confusing. It seemed to run through with grammatical errors missing pieces.
