This book marks the first collection of David Bowden's writings in written form. Spanning four years of writing and performing, this compilation covers the length and breadth of his poetic endeavors. This collection of thirty-two poems includes some of his most beloved pieces, "Death and His Sting" "Diversity's Symphony" "No Excuse" "I Believe in Scriptures" "I Do" "Unity" "I Have a Confession to Make" "I Am"
The only reason I rated this book 4 stars instead of 5 is the same as the disclaimer Bowden gave at the beginning--these poems are clearly meant to be performed out loud. The writing is great and the theology is sound, so if this is the only way you can experience Bowden's poetry, get and read this book. That said, if you can see him perform this live, do that for sure.
Despite the apology that David gave at the start of this book- these poems were meant to be presented in recitals, not in literature- he does a fantastic job of getting across the emotion of his words through the printed page. The poems deal with Christian subjects, from the relationship of the individual to the Church, to the expression of what the love of God feels like, to questions of what to do in the world as a Christian, but the passion can speak to anyone.
I'm not normally much of a poetry reader, but this collection is one I certainly recommend, especially for Christian readers.
