When it comes to film/TV show adaptations into comic book form, I have seen so many times things either going down as a 1:1 mirror match or alternatively cuttings things way too short.
Here, I feel like they absolutely nailed it. The perfect balance between not doing a perfect playback, but still capturing all of the most important scenes.
Beautiful artwork, already know the story is great from the TV show, and a full cast of amazing characters to experience again - but in comic book form this time.
Really enjoying this series. It is a very nice sit back, relax, and enjoy experience. You know what's coming, it feels like home, and the artwork and vehicle of delivery (aka comic book) are nearly perfect.
This was definitely the best issue of this series so far, and it captures a lot of the emotion from the episode it's based on. You can see how haunted Kenobi is at the beginning after learning about Anakin being alive. All the different voices he hears in his head are represented in different color speech bubbles, and you can see the trauma and anguish in his face, which is impressive for a comic.
Vader's suit construction is as menacing as ever, and I loved how he didn't give a rats ass about the Grand Inquisitor. Such a great character in the Rebels show, but such a weasely bitch in this series, and Vader doesn't care about his fate. Loved it.
You also get a hint that the Third Sister's obsession with finding Kenobi is as strong as Vader's. You can see the infighting amongst the Inquisitors, which detracts from them as characters in my opinion, making them more like squabbling children than menacing assassins, but in my mind that explains canonically why you never heard of them in the original movies. They had all been defeated by then because they sucked.
There's some genuine emotion in the conversation between Kenobi and Leia, and the scene where she asks about her parents is as wrenching as it was on screen. There's also plenty of tension from the Imperial checkpoint, and you can feel the glimmer of hope Kenobi gets when he sees an old ally's name written on the wall in the escape path.
The real highlight of this one is the fight with Vader at the end. It's brief, but powerful, and showcases how terrifying and menacing Vader can be, as he kills a young civilian and drags his old master through a fire to make him suffer as he did. I remember it being one of the most intense sequences of the show, and you can feel it all in this book.
Good lord I forgot how awful it was that Vader used innocents to draw Obi-Wan out by killing them while he knew Obi-Wan was watching somewhere. All his brutal actions only happened specifically to torture Obi-Wan then Vader goes into physically drag him through the fire to ensure that Obi-Wan knows the pain Vader felt??? I remember all of it happening in the show but I just forgot how damn brutal it all is.
