Yuzuru Amida is filled with regret. Although he fell in love with free-spirited Ai Mizuno in middle school, he never managed to tell her how he felt and subsequently drifted apart from her. But when Yuzuru reunites with Ai by chance in the summer of his first year of high school, he realizes that his feelings for her haven’t changed in the slightest. As this pair of total opposites gets reacquainted, however, they sometimes butt heads and find themselves at odds with each other. When all is said and done, will they end up as friends...or something more?
Kinda a weird first volume, and hard to recommend on its own. I'm going to try and continue to read more cause it feels like it could get more enjoyable as the story progresses.
The basic setup is boy breaks up with girlfriend, she leaves town, she comes back (only about 2 years later, so pain still there), and she thinks she can just continue where they left off / still harbors love for him.
The book moves pretty fast, I couldn't really tell if it was just short or if it actually was the pace that was quick. It's a lot of introspection and sitting with one's feelings, less plot progression, so you have to be in the mood for that. I'm kinda interested more in the supporting cast, though I also do relate to the main girl in that she wants to live life on her terms and not be tied down by expectations (but then at the same time, living that way causes people to react negatively to her, so there's a balance for her she needs to reach). Main guy is whatever, he is a bit dense with others and also doesn't communicate well. A lot of problems could have been solved by just talking it out.
I'm hoping the story goes to interesting places with future volumes. Maybe it doesn't end with them getting back together easily or at all? That would be surprising or interesting, but I'm expecting that they both learn to grow and change as humans and re-establish their romance in the future.
Not sure how I really felt about the first volume of this light novel series. Ai, the female first lead, screams manic pixie dream girl, and I did not enjoy that concept. The issue seems to be less defined towards the last part of the volume but still irks me. And the random scenes of the male first lead getting an eyeful of the female second lead's cleavage just come out of nowhere with the emotional tone the story is trying to convey. I think I will give this series another volume try.
