What happens when a cocky surgeon bosses around a sassy nurse? She hands him a dose of the cold shoulder.
After the death of my brother, I couldn’t bear to work in the very halls of the hospital where he died. Seeking a fresh start, I accept a position in the emergency room of a new hospital, in a desperate attempt to piece my life together again.
My hopes of a smooth transition take a jarring turn when I meet Dr. Parker Winters. As the chief surgical resident, he is known for his no-nonsense attitude and controlling demeanor. Oh… and he’s best friends with my ex-boyfriend.
Immediately we begin butting heads, working against each other simply out of spite. That all changes when Parker saves me from the brink of death by performing a life-saving operation. When he demands to oversee my recovery, my hatred for him starts to crumble. As the chemistry between us becomes impossible to ignore, how long will it be before I give in to the devilishly handsome doctor’s orders?
Lexie Woods is a registered nurse who writes steamy medical romance novels from the comfort of her air conditioned home in Texas. With approximately 20 failed ADHD hobbies sitting in the graveyard of her attic, her husband is hopeful this might finally stick. When she’s not questioning her friends about their most unhinged fantasies, she can be found floating in her backyard pool with a margarita in hand.
This book…was so bad? As someone who works in healthcare, I should’ve known better than to pick up a doctor/nurse romance. I had my suspicions but thought “what the heck! It could be fun!” What came next can only be described as nonstop eye rolling and cringing, because the plot and writing was absolutely terrible.
What I liked: - The premise was interesting enough to draw me in (workplace “enemies” to lovers, MMC doctor saves FMC nurse’s life, the caretaker trope, etc etc) - Nothing else really
What I didn’t like: - How poorly the premise was executed. I thought we’d build up to her almost dying, him saving her life, then them falling in love during her recovery. It was literally the exact opposite, as there’s zero build up to anything. We get her accident in the first 15% of the book (I think?), then him “saving” her life, then her weird recovery timeline, all nearly at the beginning of the book. - The fact that the synopsis of the book essentially lied. It says he “performs a procedure to save her life,” but he literally doesn’t? Spoiler alert: FMC gets hit by a car and MMC is conveniently there to see it and insist the ambulance take her to their hospital, even going so far as to pull out his bLaCK aMEx card to bribe the EMTs (?), as if that’s how that works at all. Then I guess she gets surgery to just reset her broken bones, and she’s released from the hospital that same day. Not very life-threatening, if she’s leaving the hospital so quickly and returning to work a couple of weeks later. Also, no doctor worth their license would release someone who got hit by a car so quickly?? None of this made any sense and I hated it so much. - Their relationship was just not it. The banter was clunky, misplaced (in front of patients? Seriously?), and just cringe. The FMC gets the hots for him at the weirdest times, in the weirdest ways, and he was so very obviously not interested in her. But then he was. But then he wasn’t. She has brain rot, and he’s just weird.
I could probably go on, but I won’t. I also can’t, because every time I closed this book I immediately forgot everything I read in an effort to protect my intellect and critical thinking skills. As I’m writing this, I realize that I don’t even remember their names. I’m honestly shocked that this was apparently written by a nurse, as it reads more like fan fiction of what someone *hopes* a romance in the medical field is like, not what it actually is. No part of this book, not the romance or the hospital setting or anything in between, is based in reality.
⭐️/5 thank god I didn’t pay for this book with my own money
This gave me the Grey’s Anatomy fix I was looking for! Cassidy is an ER nurse, while Parker is the chief surgical resident. These two don’t start on the best foot at all, but that’s just a cover for the intense attraction that’s two have for each other. It also doesn’t help that Parker’s best friend from med school is Cassidy’s ex.
This was a fun read. I enjoyed all the medical and nursing terminology just as much as I loved the spice. Of course, this was the author’s debut novel so there were parts that needed a little work, but this author has a lot of potential and I cannot wait for the next book in the series!
Highly recommend if you’re looking for a good medical romance!
As an RN who does not read or watch anything medical, this book gets my stamp of approval!
Dr. Resident is the debut novel and the first book in the Midtown Memorial series by Lexie Woods that follows Parker and Cassidy. Parker is the chief surgical resident and Cassidy is an ER nurse and they both work at Midtown Memorial hospital. But their paths have never crossed until one morning Parker literally runs into Cassidy on their way into work. There is an immediate attraction but also a mutual dislike for one another. This dislike only grows as Parker covers the surgical consults for the ER for a week. But this dislike turns quickly into lust. But can their lust turn into love with all of the obstacles that they face?
📚 Book Tropes: - Enemies/Dislike to Love - Doctor x Nurse - Workplace/Hospital Romance - Opposites Attract - Grumpy x Sunshine - BDSM
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 Spice: 🌶🌶🌶🌶
💭 My Thoughts: As an RN, I hate to read anything medical because I feel like it is never portrayed accurately. But with that being said, I also don't want to read something that I experience in real life every day BUT I co-sign on this one! I give this medical romance my approval. It's funny how accurate everything in this book is but I would expect nothing less since the author is an RN herself. If you are looking to read something to give yourself an inside look at the inner workings for hospital relationship then this is the one for you! As I was reading I felt like II was transported by to my ICU days gossiping about my latest co-worker hooking up with the hot new surgical resident. Because YES this happens frequently in a hospital.
What I was not expecting... is how spicy this book would be. Our boy Parker, he knows what he likes and boy did he push Cassidy's limits. He introduced her to a whole new world. With that being said, Parker also has a personality that you will either love or hate but he's a very good representation of a surgical resident. He's arrogant and think his shit don't stink. That also spills over into his personal life as well. His need for control is evident and at first I was unsure of how I felt about how he treated Cassidy at times but you learn more about him and I couldn't help but to fall in love.
There is a second book and I WILL be reading it because I love feeling like I am immersed into the hospital gossip. So if you are wondering if I recommend this one, the answer is yes!
For someone who won't even watch any sort of medical drama, I continuously surprise myself each time I pick up a romance set in the world of Medicine.
This was a good story and I really did like the intricacies of the plot but surprisingly (to me), there were just too many 'steamy' scenes without a true development in the relationship. I know, I know...steamy scenes in a romance novel, who woulda thunk? But with an absence of focusing on and/or developing the relationship, those scenes didn't really hit their mark. Plus, Parker's character was a little bit too much "Fifty Shades of Grey" adjacent for me. However, I do know that there are readers who enjoy a character like that. If so, this book may be the one for you.
With all that being said, I loved the other background things that were going on in this novel and wish that there was more to it (Cass's brother, Parker's family, etc). I feel like there was a lot left up in the air in regards to those storylines without a full explanation which is unfortunate because those storylines were my favourite part of this book.
It was a good read but unfortunately not the one that I was hoping for. If you are looking for a book that is solely focused on a physical relationship between characters without a meaningful or developed relationship, maybe pick this book up but don't expect anything more than superficial when it comes their romance.
What to Expect: - Medical Romance - Workplace Romance - Doctor/Nurse - Grumpy/Sunshine - Best Friend's Ex - Enemies to Lovers - Forced Proximity - Opposites Attract - Light BDSM - Dual POV - Duet Narration
Dr. Resident is the first book in the Midtown Memorial series, following Cassidy Callaway, an ER nurse, and Dr. Parker Winters, chief general surgical resident. These two didn't get off to a good start, and their first meeting was a mess. Working together at Midtown Memorial certainly didn't help. They constantly bumped heads, giving us pages of sarcasm, eye rolls, and fiery tension. You know what? I loved every second of it.
The chemistry between Cassidy and Parker is sizzling. Parker is confident and takes charge, and Cassidy knows exactly how to stand her ground. They challenge each other in all the best ways. Their relationship quickly moves from enemies to flirty friends, and then to something MUCH steamier.
Dr. Resident has the right mix of everything I love about a hospital-based drama, and has major Grey’s Anatomy and The Resident vibes. If you are looking for a fast-paced, engaging story with witty banter, strong female characters, a little emotional drama, and some steamy (light BDSM) moments, you will enjoy this book. This was a good time, and I'm excited to read and listen to Claire and Beau's story next!
Narration: Desiree Ketchum and John Lane performed this audiobook in duet. Desiree did a fantastic job as Cassidy. Cassidy is dealing with some past trauma and is a little inexperienced, but she is strong and no-nonsense. Deisree made me feel every emotion Cassidy was feeling as she navigated her wants and needs. John did a wonderful job capturing Parker's playful, grumpy, alpha, and dom-like nature. It was fun having Cassidy, Parker, and their steamy shenanigans in my ears.
Thanks to Lexie Woods and Blue Nose Audio for the early review opportunity. Opinions expressed are my own.
For me, I mainly read dark romance and things of that nature so stepping back and listening to this contemporary romance and it also being my first doctor x nurse relationship was a nice little break from all the dark, I’m usually normal with reading. Even though this is a contemporary romance, there are still some minor trigger warnings that you should take into consideration, and it is no less spicy. than your typical dark romance. I loved the relationship building between our MMC Parker, and our FMC Cassidy. I thought they had the perfect like not really enemies to lovers in my view more like haters to lovers, but it was done perfectly in my view that they honestly did not like each other until something happens to Cassidy and Parker was just like I don’t know what I would’ve done if I lost her. Quick kind of overview Parker is a resident surgeon at the hospital that Cassidy is a nurse at and they just happen to meet by chance on the train, and from there on out, they can’t get each other out of their heads. It’s a great read. It is the first book out of a four book series. It does follow other characters that you’ll meet in the book. My only thing that I did not really care for this book is the third act break up, that is not really one of my favorite tropes. Other than that, the audiobook and the physical book are an amazing thing to either listen or read!!! I do highly recommend this book especially if you are somebody that likes the doctor x nurse trope. The audiobook is releasing tomorrow on Audible. It is going to be a blue nose audio production, and it is to duet style by Desireé Ketchum and John Lane!!!!
Happy Pub Day! @lexiewoods_author totally knocked it out of the park with her hospital romance debut novel! Imagine Grey’s Anatomy but spicer 🔥 I thought the book was extremely well written and the spice to plot ratio was perfection for me since you know I like ‘em spicy 🌶️
Cassidy & Parker get off to a rough start after bumping into each other on the train. Come to find out Cassidy is a newer ER nurse and Parker happens to be a surgical Resident filling in for the ER. They hate each other but yet they cannot sent the pull they have! Especially when Cass gets into an accident and the broody Dr. insists on doing her surgery himself 🤭
I loved our two main characters, Cassidy and Parker! You definitely can feel their chemistry coming off the pages. And man on man does Dr. Winter’s have a mouth on him 🫠 let me just say if this man asked me to crawl to him I would say “yes sir” 🧎♀️no doubt about it.
This is not to say that this was all spice because it wasn’t! (It was just a really great added bonus 😉). This book also dealt with the inner workings of medical ethics as well as how the medical field has transformed since Covid.
Read if you like: • hospital workplace romance • surgical resident X ER nurse • enemies to lovers • forbidden • opposites attract • hand necklaces & STFUATILAGG 🥵
I was truly blown away by this debut! If you are a spicy romance lover and/or work in the medical field, I think you’d love this one! On #KindleUnlimited NOW 🩵
I enjoyed this book so much—the drama, the spice, the build up, everything was great. I would have liked a bit more emotional depth, but overall, it was a very enjoyable read.

ARC Review: This book is Lexie Woods debut book and it’s a damn good one! It had me hooked from start to finish and I was eagerly flipping pages to find out what will happen next. It was a wild ride with some interesting twists and turns and Nurse Cassidy and Dr. Parker Winters had an amazing love-hate relationship, that was super addictive. I have never read a hospital romance and I was pleasantly surprised how well everything was described throughout the book.
Now, let’s talk about Dr. Steamy aka Dr. Parker Winters…he is a lot…but in the best way possible. He’s got this whole hot, mouthy, alpha, dom doctor vibe going on and I loved it. Everything about his character worked so well for me, sure sometimes he could be a real arrogant dick but that’s probably because he is really straight forward with his feelings. Cassidy is so lovely, she is this feisty, funny, witty whirlwind of a nurse on one side and on the other side this really vulnerable and relatable character. Parker and her somehow worked perfect together, and the banter wasn’t amazing. Cassidy had a thing for pushing Parker’s buttons and getting unter his skin. Cassidy’s and Parker’s tension was electric and it was so entertaining to watch them test out each others limits. And if all this wasn’t enough, Cassidy’s ex boyfriend is Parker’s best friend, so this added a lot more layers for drama. Also the spice was super well written. Parker was this dominant person in the bedroom and it fit so well into the rest of his character, and Cassidy was just able to let go and give herself fully to Parker…so hot!
The only thing I didn’t really care for/didn’t like was that both Parker and Cassidy had kissed/where intimate with a different person in the beginning of the book after they had already bin semi intimate with each other (no cheating because they where not officially dating/hooking up).
Bottom line this was a solid debut novel. If you’re into spicy hospital romance with complex characters and a lot of witty banter this book will be for you! Also thank you Lexie Woods for giving me the opportunity to read this ARC!
I typically don't read medical romance books, but this is one that I really enjoyed!! Working in healthcare, I think this was a realistic portrayal of the struggles that healthcare workers experience and I loved that it was incorporated into the story - which totally makes sense as the author is also a nurse. I loved the spice we got between Parker and Cassidy and could not get enough of them together! Cannot wait to read the next book in this series and I know Lexie won't disappoint!
Audiobook: Performed in duet by Desiree Ketchum & John Lane - they both did a phenomenal job at giving us Parker & Cass’ story! I could not stop listening and am so happy that Midtown Memorial is finally in our ears!
What to expect: - Doctor x Nurse - Medical/Hospital Romance - Opposites Attract - Grumpy x Sunshine - Light BDSM - Dual POV
I was not expecting to like this as much as I did. The sour patch of Parker through me into a whirlwind and I was here for it! I would absolutely defy this man on purpose jut to provoke him like Cassie did.
This was an entertaining book. I’m a sucker for medical romances. I liked the characters and the storyline although there were a lot of eye roll moments for me. But regardless it was a decent read and if you like Dr. / Nurse dynamics then you will like this storyline.
The narrators were great! They voiced the characters perfectly.
I really enjoyed this book. This is Lexie's debut novel and it’s so good!
The two main characters are Dr. Parker Winters and nurse Cassidy. They both are extremely likable characters. Cassidy and Parker have so much chemistry! This book was super spicy! Dr.Parker has such a dirty mouth and I loved every minute of it 🫠😮💨
This book releases tomorrow, October 10th! If you love hospital romance, Grey's Anatomy, and lots of spice then this book is for you! I'm looking forward to more books by Lexie in the future.
3.5⭐️ This was my first medical romance book and by this author. I did enjoy it and the spice was definitely spicing but the writing was a little off for me. Overall though it was a good read!
As a diehard Greys anatomy fan this was just perfection! There was drama, clinical trials, a host of interesting characters and topped off with some pretty hot scenes! Just what the doctor ordered!
Had potential sadly this book kinda lost me when he leaves her after hooking up cause she told him she doesn't have much experience. then completely lost me when right after that he decides to find a recurrent hook-up to bang for the weekend and ghost the female protagonist 🤢💩
The timeline was messy and didn't make sense. When she was with Wenston and then their hookup her starting working as a nurse and then finding out Wenston was working too plus their breakup and her brother passing? I thought that he died a couple of years prior not one year. I thought she broke up with him way before. So yeah it was confusing to say the least. Also the protagonist reveals to the other protagonist that she never orgasm with someone else. So the last hookup she had with Wenston why did she? If she wouldn't orgasm with him... Also what was the purpose of that scene? Didn't add anything more to the story. Prologues tend to introduce an important issue that later on will lead to something which in this case didn't. Different story would have been if she was still interested in Weston and wanting to try again and all and then meeting the protagonist and kind of having also interest and not knowing what to do if go with the new or remain on the old. It would have been great if this would have been like a fake dating where he helps her to get Wenston and then he ends up falling for her in the process... that would have been like crazy dramatic which I prefer🙏😭❤️
The hate thing was too rushed. i felt it ended pretty quickly. i was expecting for them to banter and have at it at least 40% and then on the 50% she has the accident and their dynamic slowly starts changing. But no they literally "hate" each other for just a few chapters and then the accident happens then they hook-up then he ghosts her then they are in a relationship then he break-ups with her and then she goes after him and get back together oh and on her first Christmas after his brother passed away 🙄 i do not remember much details as at that point i was speed reading the majority of it to see what more 💩 could the book have. Also i thought that he was an ass and she was too horny to think straight and see that he was bad news but well I'll still will give a chance on Beau story.
[dnf @ 35%] i really wanna finish the book but i can't make myself to do it... the main characters are not likeable, not one bit. i feel like they are playing mind games with each other, one minute they are in lust, another minute they seems to hate each other. tsk... and then i really don't understand the heroine's mentality about her ex-boyfriend, she was like "i can't afford to get hurt again... the wounds from the past are still fresh... i'm not ready to put my heart on the line again" yada yada yada, but she hook with the same ex-boyfriend a while ago. like huh?? she doesn't want to get hurt but sleeping with him was okay? i don't really get the premise of the whole book to be honest, the execution needs some plastic surgery for me...

review:
dr. resident (midtown memorial book 1) by lexie woods has fulfilled my litte greys anatomy heart and i am purely satisfied. in a way. great amount of balance between plot and spice that also impacts a ton of my reviews and is very important. at times i was questioning the charcters and there choices. i honestly couldn't care for parker. he disguisted me in ways when we would put himself first at times and always get agitated with cassidy she did not deserve that. this is why i initially brang my review from 4 stars to 3. he disrepceted the fuck out of her with the cold shoulder and snarky attitude all about him.
if that sounds like your jam of a book read it. if not and you're not particularly into these things i'd advise you not to read.
Things I loved: • I really love having a double POV, always a big fan of this • I love having nursing representation! I love how the author was able to share and showcase the struggles of nursing. Sometimes, as a nurse, we give so much to our patients abe we forget to take care of ourselves. The author and the book really shared the ups and downs of being a nurse, the effects of the pandemic to hospitals and nursing staff, and mostly, how emotionally draining the work is. • I LOVE how the relationships between Cassidy and Parker grew. Yes, it started out physical, but the fact that they found peace with each other, it was just sooo nice. • I love the banter between the characters! Really gives the book lots of tension! • I love how much Parker respects Cassidy. Like he never once made Cassidy felt less than him… just because she’s a nurse. • last but not the least… the SPICE! Wow! Just wow! So many scenes to choose from!
Dislikes: • sooo much sex… I guess my complaint about this is that it didn’t drive the story on some parts. This is very much a personal opinion. • I wish there was more fluff
▪️He found out she was inexperienced and left her in the cold. He also slept with another girl because of it to get ”over” her, ick. Granted she did too but she never went through with it and she also was deeply hurt by him. ▪️There was no grovelling either by him.
▪️The way he and his best friend talk about women is also ew. Make him seem like a not a serious dude who shouldn’t go after Cassidy who needs something serious. He’s not a serious dude right now.
▪️He’s angry at her because she was late??? She was working and he think she should have picked up her phone to text in the middle of her work? ▪️She was trying to provoke him, whyyyyy??! That was also mean.
▪️I hate that she is the one who goes after him when he should do it. She also never stand up for herself and makes her seem weak somewhat. She’s the one who goes after him when she hasn’t done the worst. She’s always goes back to him even when he treated her the worst.

Yup, I know of some real-life relationships that run parallel to Parker and Cassidy's.
Cass's hurt is almost tangible, she's handling it the best way she can. Parker is a control freak, and Cats shores him up. I confess, I wanted to reach into my kindle and flick his ear - he behaves just like my other half does, overthinks things.
Their's is a relationship that's hot and cold as well as very passionate; there are secrets and backstabbing; there is some insight into being a medical practitioner at any level, albeit fictional.
This book worked for me, I really enjoyed the storyline.
