Review:
First off OMG the cliffhanger in this book has me sooooo saddd like I need book 2 right now!!!

I absolutely LOVE the mix of the mythology in this book!!! I got to be introduced to Urban, Norse and Egyptian mythology which I’ve never read anything but Greek mythology (which is in the book also) and I loved it!!! The author did very well with combining all of them together!

I also love the way the story flows throughout the book! There were times u could feel the emotions of the characters as your reading and I LOVE that feeling!

I will definitely recommend this book 100% to everyone!

Wow! From the moment I heard about this series I had to read it and it absolutely did not disappoint!

I loved the banter and interaction between the characters. Marron's bond from the beginning when Ryn was presented as the Creature they eventually called Eden develops beautifully even though at first you almost stop and go, wait what? Then once she is able to shift completely into Fenryn I was 100% sold on the relationship. I also love Mer with her mate Evan, learning about the bonds and fates was extremely interesting and the overall concept is brilliant.

The modernization in the worlds is phenomenal, and you still get the representation and understanding being presented to you to where they are easily recognizable from place to place and with each of the gods.

I thought I would be successful at making it to the end without having any emotional spells but I wasn't so lucky. I am glad that the second book is out otherwise I would be driving myself crazy with that cliffhanger, desperately needing to know what happens next.

A Cruel Game of Fate by Jessica Lane is a fast-paced romantasy set in an urban world where characters from mythology coexist among humans. I'll admit I wasn't sure what to expect with this story, though the mythology aspects (Greek, Norse, Egyptian) had me intrigued. The story opened with the main character Fenryn, who at the time was stuck in a mysterious creature form due to a curse/spell cast on her by her abusive husband (a certain Egyptian god), and she had forgotten what her true name and identity was. I had mixed feelings on this, as I didn't feel connected to the POV from the start. That came a bit later once she returned to her true form and her personality emerged. The banter with the main cast of characters was fun, playful, and felt natural. I enjoyed this found family aspect very much!

What I loved: the characters. They're standouts, and they're what kept me reading. I really wanted to know how this story would end because I was invested in their relationships. And the cliffhanger ensures I'll read the next installment.

What I wasn't too keen on: the spice. I prefer a more clean to swoon-worthy romance, rather than open door spice. Also, the urban setting at times pulled me out of the story. Anytime the characters mentioned cell phones and/or text messages, it just felt weird. And it's probably because I imagined these characters in their medieval/Norse armor at all times. So hearing the modern terms just felt a bit jarring. (But this could just be me!)

What I would've liked to see more of: a deeper sense of world-building within the realms of Asgard, Olympus, etc. The premise and story is engaging and has so much it can pull from that I hope in book 2 we get to see the world, environment, and descriptions expand a bit more to reflect the richness of these mythological places.

And the editor in me must make note that one more proofread pass may've caught some of the grammar/punctuation errors and really made this manuscript shine.

Overall, I found this book to be an enjoyable read. I did read it fast! I think fans of romantic fantasy stories with mythology, fated mates, banter, fae, and magic, will find this to be an engaging read. I'm looking forward to book 2 and what awaits this unique cast of characters.

• I can’t wait for the second book ❤️
• I knew something was going on as soon as Marron said he feels connected to the “thing” . I was mad at him in the beginning but he came around quickly.
• I liked that it was fast paced because I hate feeling anxious while waiting for something to happen .
• I’m fascinated with all types of mythology ( beginning with my home country and the ones more popular, like Norse and greek) , so is safe to say I went through this book very fast.

Awesome read , can’t wait for the next one ❤️

I’m so glad a friend introduced me to this author and this series! I love the base of the story being in multiple mythologies while adding unique and interesting twists to characters I thought I knew. The overall plot draws you in while the world being built invites the reader to a magical world where peace is the objective, but egos get in the way. I want to be a part of Fenryn’s crew! I want to train with the Valkyries, get coffee with Meraena and go dancing with the delicious Prince Marron! I am already reading the second book (Fate’s Wicked Trials) and cannot wait for the next one to be released! Highly recommend!

Reading a Cruel Game of Fate by Jessica Lane has been a reminder that the most captivating books we have yet to read exist right within our TBR. I downloaded this book this afternoon and became so captivated by the magically vivid storytelling that I couldn’t stop reading until I was finished. Mythologies and folklores from different cultures have always fascinated me since childhood. A Cruel Game of Fate combines the mythological characters from multiple cultures including Norse, Greek, Roman, Celtic, Indigenous, Egyptian, and more with fae in all their forms including shifters, and humans. Lane both uses existing myths and magic systems/ abilities existing within those myths and also created original stories for specific characters. This is in no way a retelling or reimagining of an existing story or myth; it is 100% a brand new story from Lane’s creative mind. I really enjoyed seeing the characters in a new light and with a fully new storyline so I wasn’t able to immediately know how the OG story progresses and ends. The main characters and side characters are so incredibly written. They all have such layered personalities that grow and develop as the story progresses. There are beautiful romantic relationships, the FMC and MMC have few rivals, but the novel also reinforces the importance of friendship, kindness, and support which was nice to see as well. It’s impossible to not become emotionally attached and invested. The ending had me hanging by a thread with every page. I wanted to immediately start reading book two upon finishing but I had to write the book a review it deserves. I highly recommend reading this novel!

This book took me longer than I expected to read. The description reeled me in as I love the Greek gods and goddesses storylines, and I was intrigued. I started reading and felt like a lot of stuff was thrown to me as a reader without the proper world building to build upon it. It felt like a lot of information that made more sense and settled halfway through the book, especially with different mythologies coming into play.

It was slow at first because of that, but I absolutely loved the plot of this book! The potential is there and I am so glad I stuck with it! I am left wondering what’s going to happen in book two after that cliffhanger, though. My heart was pounding throughout that last chapter as everything unfolded.

I love the way we are initially introduced to the characters and set up - it made it feel like we could get a good grasp of their personality types and their relational dynamics to each other and overall story; it was unexpected and made me need - not just want - to know more. I love that Fenryn is strong and fiery with a compassionate heart and she deserves so much after all she's endured for 200+ years. The "fates" have really done a number on her, and now they have one more twist - a true mate - in the midst of all this - is he worthy of her trust? Is she deserving of something better than her past? Can she accept a new mate after what she's been through? With an impending war to prevent and repugnant evil to destroy - she has to find herself, make hard decisions and prepare for a future for all she cares for. World-building was on point with enough details to visualize without being bogged down. From Fae to humans and demons to gods, I was impressed with the vast variety of mythology merged effortlessly with this unique and well written concept. Ending on a cliffhanger has me excitedly waiting to know what happens next!

A MUST READ!
This is the first book I've read that had Greek Mythology. So, at first I was a little confused on who some of the characters were. Once I talked with a few people and did some research I immediately fell in love with the characters. Fenryn and Marron are my favorite. I love that Fenryn is a total bad ass character, but still has a heart of gold! I do get a little Sarah J Mass vibes when reading about the mating bond between the different characters.

Ms. Jessica definitely left me wanting more... I'm excited for the next book!

This is an overall good read. There will be a second book which will be intriguing to see how that plays out.

The beginning started a little slow for me but once Ryn shifted and started to get her powers back and realized she has a mate things def picked up.

The style of writing is different from what I normally read not that it was bad just different took a little getting use to for me.

I like the fae aspect and that it’s not solely focused on Greek mythology it has other gods involved from different backgrounds aka Norse and Egyptian!

I would recommend for others to read!

LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!

I absolutely love this book! I love the mixture of Greek, Norse and Egyptian mythologies and how the author skillfully blended the three together. It gives a different perspective in some of the characters such as Fenryn (aka Fenrir). Although some parts were somewhat predictable, there still are some “ah ha” moments! One thing I did have trouble with was the switch between character’s perspectives. However, after alil bit it was easier to catch on when the switch happens. I highly recommend reading this book! I’m excited to read the next book!

All hail the Wolf Queen ❤️‍🔥

Great mix of mythologies weaves intrigue, tragedy, resilience, and love into an amazing storyline.

I loved growing with Fenryn from a simple creature to the kickass FMC the book ends with. Her bonds of friendship and love and beautiful to behold.

I’m looking forward to the continuation of this adventure and seeing more of the Egyptian Gods get woven into the story.

This is the first book that I read by Jessica Lane. In the beginning, I did get a little confused trying to figure out the world and what was going on. Once I moved through the book, I couldn't put it down. I loved the characters and the ties to various legends and gods. I also love that their are various action scenes that showcase the power of the female characters. I also liked the fact that when spice was introduced into the book it made sense and wasn't just placed there for the sake of having a spicy scene. I felt it was well done. I immediately want to start the next book to see what fate has in store for everyone.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The first few chapters were a little slow with the build up, but after that it was a fast paced fun ride. I’m a sucker for mythology and loved the different pantheons represented. Of course it would leave off on a major cliffhanger tho! Now I’m going to sit here very impatiently, waiting for the sequel.

Woah… I really did not expect to enjoy this book as much as I did. The blending of different mythologies and Fae… it was absolutely *chef’s kiss*. I loved the main characters! The twist with a certain betrayal and the way another character showed up was brilliant. I honestly want to own the paperback for my collection now (I read this on kindle unlimited). I cannot wait for book 2!!!

This book is a phenomenal read. It has the gods, mythological creatures, just everything. Its not very spicy, but honestly didn't mind that. The only reason it is 4 stars instead of 5 is because the first half of the book was so rushed, but once you really get into it, it's worth it

a pretty good read

This is a pretty good read. I think it could have used a little more detail. I love a quick read but this was a little too fast. There was no build of anticipation. Just bam bam bam.
