KILLING TIME is for fans of suspense, horror, and paranormal thrillers.
BOOK DESCRIPTION: Tick-tock… time to die.
Kristen thought she had nothing. No friends. A mother who bounced her from boarding school to boarding school. A father she never knew.
Then she got the call. “It’s after you, sweetie. Still after you.” Now, accompanied by the local bad boy, Kristen has only a few hours to discover the truth. To uncover secrets that have remained hidden for decades. To find out why her father abandoned her, her mother rejected her.
And how the clocks are killing them all. One at a time, those involved in the mystery are receiving the gift of a clock that counts backward to the witching hour. And when it rings at midnight, a ghostly power—and a fate truly worse than death—is unleashed.
Kristen has to hurry.
Because the otherworldly power is still out there. Coming for her.
One of the most versatile writers around, Michaelbrent Collings is an internationally bestselling novelist, produced screenwriter, and multiple Bram Stoker Award finalist. While he is best known for horror (and is one of the most successful indie horror authors in the United States), he has also written bestselling thriller, fantasy, science fiction, mystery, humor, young adult, and middle grade works, and Western Romance.
In addition to being a bestselling novelist, Michaelbrent has also received critical acclaim: he is the only person who has ever been a finalist for a Bram Stoker Award, a Dragon Award, a RONE Award, and a Whitney award: and he and his work have been reviewed and/or featured on everything from Publishers Weekly to Scream Magazine to NPR. He is also a frequent guest at comic cons and on writing podcasts like Six Figure Authors, The Creative Penn, and Writing Excuses.
Collings generously provided many of his e-books at no cost. I chose to first try Scavenger Hunt before purchasing any of the other books. I enjoyed it and gave it 4 stars. Taking advantage of this offer, I downloaded several more. Killing Time is my second Collings book. This felt like a badly executed YA horror novel. The story started out well but quickly took a turn for the worse. The plot is full of holes that are left unanswered and after finishing, I am still asking “but why?”. It does kind of come together in the end and I probably would have given it a 3-star rating (although I did not enjoy it and forced myself to finish) had it not been for the numerous grammatical errors. These errors break the continuity and takes me out of the story. With it already feeling incomplete, constantly hitting poorly structured sentences just solidified this perception. Yes, I could fill in the blanks and figure it out but that’s the author’s job. A few instances can be ignored but constant errors scream of laziness to me. Be it the fault of the editor or the author, I don’t know and I don’t care. Examples – Gerald Norton was thinner than now. (page 169) - But that was not arrested the gaze. (page 187). – Kristen’s index finger into her eye. (page 151) – The was sitting in a high-backed chair next to the computer desk. (page 163) – I didn’t start highlighting these errors until later in the book and I simply couldn’t take anymore but they were scattered throughout. In the end, I’ll leave it that the story was little more than ok and the grammar was appalling. This was such a negative experience (after enjoying the first book) that I am unsure if I want to waste time to read any of the others
In the last year, I have read quite a few books by Michaelbrent Collings. The first novel I read from him was so sensational, that I have actively searched out each new book that he releases. This author has a way of making his stories really stand out among all the others out there. In Killing Time, our main character is 17 year-old Kristen, who suddenly finds herself embarking on an adrenaline fueled race against time.
Rather than outline the plot of this story, I will simply say that my own gut was clenched throughout this novel, not knowing where the next scene would take me. Collings masterfully plays on our emotions, infuses his characters with a depth that we can't help but acknowledge, and has enough mutilations and gore to satisfy true fans of the genre. This, like many of his other incredible novels, is one that I would definitely recommend, and further encourages me to track down every other novel of his that I can get my hands on!
When you find yourself freezing in mortal terror at something as innocent as the sound of a clock chiming, you know you're in the hands of a great author...
Absolutely loved this book, read in one sitting as I couldn’t put it down, storyline was something very different and unexpected with a even more unexpected twist at the end! Defiantly worth reading!
Loved the story but the number if misplaced words was horrible! Need another set of eyes before going out to the reader.... I will think twice before reading another from this author ☹
This book kept me on the edge of my seat till the very end. Truly terrifying example of how the sins of the father can take a hold of you and never let go
I usually like Collins but this one just wasn’t it. Took me 2 months to slog through this because I kept putting it down and not wanting to continue it.
Another great book. Wow! At first it was a little hard to get into but by the third chapter I was hooked. Not gonna give too much away but I will remember this book every time I hear my clock chime. Awesome ending too!
