I wasn't supposed to have him. But now I can't let him go.

Bryson
I shouldn’t want him.
Not when he’s my best friend’s father. Not when one mistake could destroy the only friendship I can’t afford to lose.
But one look from Cole shatters every line I swore I wouldn’t cross.
He sees me in ways no one else ever has—like I matter. Like I’m his.
Giving in will cost me everything.
So why do I keep coming back for more?

Cole
I should stay away.
I built a life around protecting my son and my business. Risking it all for Bryson is reckless and wrong.
But the moment he walks into my life again, I’m addicted. I can’t stop touching him, even though each stolen kiss
drags us closer to the truth that could ruin us both.
We’re playing a dangerous game, pretending we can keep this secret. But secrets never stay buried.
And when the truth comes out, it won’t just destroy us… it’ll destroy everything.

DNF @ 53% - maybe I’ll come back to this one, but with the multiple instances of the characters just bad mouthing women and describing the one female character using negative words… I dunno, I’m over the whole “this is a gay romance, so I have to make women look bad at all times”

If you’re into codependency, this one is for you 👏🏻 i actually had a great time reading this, but also it did not need to be 500+ pages long. I also kinda wish Bryson had taken more time apart from Cole, kid needed to grow up and find his confidence outside of his codependent relationship with Cole.

Overall, loved it. Bad Wrong Things vibes but for sure not as toxic

Talk about an emotional ride. Unspoken Rules did things to my heart. It made my heart happy 🥰. It made it sad 💔. It made it angry 🤬. It made it swoon 🫠. It made it 🥵🥵🥵… well that last bit maybe wasn't my heart 😂😂😂.

Cole and Bryson have a complicated go of things from the start. Cole is Bryson’s best friend’s father.. the lines are absolutely there. So, what do we do? Cross them, of course !! ⚔️ I loved the angst. I loved the back and forth. I had very deep feelings about multiple characters that carried throughout the book, some were positive feelings and some not so much. I will say, I am a girlie who always reads for a HEA, but this one even had me questioning if a HEA was going to be the right call 🤷‍♀️. Thankfully, Penny Fox does an amazing job crafting this story that all the angst and hurt are absolutely worth it 😍.

I am only rating this to register my deep disappointment. I'm fairly certain this "author" is an actual AI slop factory. Judging by the amount of basic typos, continuity errors, syntactic errors and other odd clues like errant asterisks and inconsistent but repeated time zone difference miscalculations, not a single re-read has been performed - it's possible it's never been read pre-publish.

Apparently, this author also has an alarming publish rate, under multiple pseudonyms. If the "author" sees this, consider it a gauntlet thrown down. Disprove my theory. Because I'm beyond hypothesis at this point.

I was on the fence about this, at first. The bones were good, and the first few chapters really sucked me into the story, but in the back of my mind I kept thinking, "how is this going to work?"

The ending was a refreshing. I think that word best suits it. It isn't so much a cop out, but a new beginning with second chances all around. A more mature approach to things.

I landed on Unspoken Rules by Penny Fox as my next recommended M/M read and it was quite the journey. The book follows Bryson who falls in love with his best friend’s father, Cole, after a night of forbidden passion. Here are my complete thoughts, with spoilers:

I instantly understood Bryson’s attraction to Cole. The way he describes watching his best friend’s father all dirty and sweaty working in the yard while he was a teenager? Honey, who hasn’t had the fantasy. We love a hot dad. I totally bought it when Bryson willingly went with Cole to his hotel room. What was a bit more puzzling, however, was Cole’s decision to get his rocks off with his son’s best friend. He serendipitously comes upon Bryson alone at a bar. Bryson is in an emotionally difficult spot after being stood up by his own father, something he tells Cole. Cole plies him with a couple of drinks, returns a text a his son has sent assuring him that he is okay, then orders Bryson to follow him to his room.

During this encounter, from Cole’s POV the reader is reassured that,
“Bryson is old enough to take care of himself…but everyone needs help now and then. He may be growing into a man, but he’s still young. He’s old enough to graduate college and make his own decisions. Old enough to be in a bar. Old enough to suck my cock, too”

Something about that felt a bit off, especially after Cole spends time musing about Bryson’s difficult upbringing, referencing both parental neglect/abuse and parental suicide. I think being around for his childhood and expressing pride over his growth over the years created a feeling that Chris Harrison was about to jump out from a hidden corner with a camera crew. Again, I totally get the fantasy and why this trope is so popular, but maybe Bryson and Cole’s son, Chris, should have been like….friends from college, instead of lifelong buddies.

While Cole consoles Bryson with his penis, I found myself alarmed by the immediate kink involved. Suddenly, Bryson was peeling off Cole’s shoes and being called a good boy. Although, at this point Cole has checked in with Bryson about consent and whether alcohol had impaired his ability to consent, there is never any conversation about this assumption of Daddy-service-good-boy roles that is somehow instantly established. The Daddying was going a little too far for me in this instance, but I went with it. This was a hot, somewhat questionable opening. The dirty talk made me blush on my lunch break, mission accomplished. Negative points for exchange of bodily fluids in this scene. Be smart, Bryson. It really seems like your friend’s dad seems like he’s been around the block. No judgment, just a behavioral assessment. Also, a random daddy discovering you have sensitive nipples isn’t some great intimate secret, wtf?

Following the initial encounter, the story springs forward six months. We rejoin Bryson after a particularly bad encounter with his father. He’s in an Uber traveling to Chris’ home after coming out to his father, an event that evidently didn’t go well. He also has several unread text messages from an ex-boyfriend, Daniel, who he describes as manipulative and unable to cope with their break up. When this information was revealed, I had several questions: how long was this relationship? Did the encounter with Cole occur during their relationship? Is Cole, the inventor of nipple stimulation, going to have to put this Daniel in his place?

The reader is also informed that following their steamy encounter, Cole fled the hotel room and left Bryson to wake up on his own. Yes, the same man who knew Bryson needed someone strong to take care of him because of all his abandonment and paternal issues decided to treat him like a Grindr hookup. Way to make a girl’s heart flutter, daddy. I suppose this was a good decision, to distance himself from his son’s best friend, but if he were that concerned maybe he should have abstained in the first place.

Naturally, when Bryson arrives at Chris’ house he immediately encounters Cole who is home alone and freshly out of the shower. Despite the wam, bam, thank you ma’am of it all, Bryson’s penis still twitches at the sight (it really twitches quite a bit in this story, it seems) but he resists the urge to throw himself at his one time lover and full time father figure.
*There’s an awkward line where Bryson mentions not having a bathing suit for swimming and Cole insists that it didn’t stop Bryson and Chris when they were teenagers
"I’m a big boy now, Cole. I don’t do that stupid shit anymore.”
He smirks. “But life is so much more fun when you’re bigger.”

baby, where is Chris Harrison and this camera crew!?!

Cole catches Bryson on the phone with his ex-boyfriend and says that he should be more confident in himself. This sentiment is particularly rich considering the way Cole used him for sexual gratification and then left him alone in a hotel room without explanation for six months. I’m sure that must have done wonders for his confidence. Even weirder is that as Cole comforts him with a hug and he “feel[s] the ridge of his abs, the cut of his pecs” he can’t help but wish that Cole’s arms could be his safe place always. Calm down, sloppabottomus. He couldn’t even give you one full night.

Another interesting moment comes when Bryson arrives at a party at his friend's house and is upset that Chris is having sex with a random girl. The anger stems from a supposed romantic connection between Chris and their friend, Mila. Bryson walks in on his friend having sex, engages in conversation, and then sarcastically says he hopes his friend doesn’t get herpes. Excuse me? Fuck off, dude. You swallowed his potential siblings without question. I get that the character is attempting to be a good friend, but the judgment and the shaming is coming from the wrong place.

In a truly unhinged scene, Chris and Cole have some sort of argument after Chris misses their weekly tradition of having Sunday breakfast as a family. Bryson doesn’t witness the argument and is annoyed with his friend because of his drinking, so he opts to shoot Cole a text message to see if he’s okay and if there’s anything he can do to help. Cole’s response? Come suck my dick. Bryson quickly acquiesces to his request and blows him on the patio. Once the act is finished, Cole clings to him and urges him not to leave, unlike the time he left Bryson like a floozy and fled in the night. I couldn’t help but wonder if catching his father and best friend in such a position would cause Chris to hit the sauce even harder, but luckily he didn’t catch them.

Later that night Cole finds himself ready for round two and texts Bryson, who is struggling with a guilty conscience from keeping this secret from Chris. He overcomes this guilt and sends a dick pic to Bryson in response who sneaks into his room. When Bryson begins to question whether their sexual relationship is right or wrong, and expresses his insecurity, Cole storms out of the room while declaring he knew this was a bad idea all along. The next night, Cole surprises Bryson in the bathroom. Bryson emerges from the shower, obviously naked, and Cole offers an apology in the form of playing with his penis. I guess this is the story attempting to utilize a hot and cold trope of some sort, but because of the relationship dynamic with the two MCs this seems….problematic. Like Grooming 101 problematic.

Let’s talk about sexual health, as I’ve already alluded to a few times. Cole and Bryson decide to ease off one another following an argument with Chris, who is spiraling in his drinking. They still observe the family tradition of Sunday breakfast (even though Chris, the actual family isn’t there) and they encounter a woman who suggests she will see Cole later in the week for a date. Cutting to the next chapter, Bryson debates with himself if he has a right to be annoyed by Cole’s potential relationship. To broach the issue he comes up with this: “Unless I play the STD angle. I mean, I could ask what the fuck was up with that, considering my genitals are at risk.”
So, the first time he has ever considered his sexual health in all of this fluid swapping madness only occurs as a result of his jealousy? That’s certainly a choice. And the next time they begin to get intimate, Bryson has lingering questions about the woman but refuses to ask them even though Cole insists that he only be a good boy for him. CHOICES.

Although this woman is dismissed as a one time mistake, it isn’t long before Bryson stumbles into Cole’s office and finds the woman sitting on his desk. Cole reassures him, but Bryson flees to a bar to drink away his worries. When he enters the house later that nice Cole grabs him, pins him to a wall, and then gives him the trusty right hand until he ejaculates on the wall. Instead of discussing the reason why Bryson was upset in the first place, he is instructed to lick his sperm from the wall. To further illustrate his point, Cole then spanks Bryson while telling him that Connie (the mystery woman) means nothing to him. Who needs communication and trust when you can have this instead?

Also, I’m just going to say this — everytime I read a scene involving unprepared (physically) anal sex, it feels like homophobia to me lol. Skipping hygienic scenes, sure, no one wants to be taken out of the fantasy, but baby…It’s messy. Oh, and apparently sexual health becomes an issue in chapter 53, when Cole finishes in Bryson without a condom. Cole freaks out and apologizes, swearing he is clean. Why? Condoms have not been mentioned prior to this point and Bryson has already guzzled enough of his semen to make it seem like a dietary staple.

Cole buys Bryson a car for his birthday, which seems a bit extravagant for someone you’ve been secretly fucking for a few months, but good for Bryson for getting something out of all this other than hemorrhoids and worsening daddy issues. When Chris finally busts them in a compromising position, I was so thankful he was deep enough in his drunken angst to lash out. Let ‘em have it! He accuses Cole of always giving Bryson more attention than him, which I can totally see. He has a preoccupation. Cole gets angry, directs his misplaced anger at Bryson, and Bryson accepts a position with his company in Boston. For a moment, I wanted to give him the old yasssss queen for getting that car and daddy dick and then fleeing the scene of the crime, but with nearly a quarter of the story left I knew the separation wasn’t destined to last.

My suspicions were obviously confirmed. After a month of no contact, Cole shows up on Bryson’s doorstep and announces that Chris is in a coma as the result of a drunk driving accident. Cole also asserts that he’s the worst father in existence because he couldn’t stop thinking about Bryson being by his side in the hospital and I couldn’t help but agree with his assessment. Your child, who has openly expressed his resentment that you give his best friend more attention than him, is in a coma…so you fly across the country to see Bryson. Yeah, dude, that’s pretty fucked.

They return across the country together and Chris wakes up from his coma, but upon waking his mind is stuck three years in the past. Cole warns Bryson not to share any details about his current life (like graduating from college, working in Boston, etc.) because the doctor advised that giving him too much information about things he couldn’t remember could be detrimental. He quickly tells Chris that he has to get back to Boston for work. And the next day when Chris is discharged home, because apparently with coma patients you have to get them out as quickly as possible, Bryson alludes to the fact something has happened that has strained their friendship.

When Bryson drops Chris off to spend time with Mila, the girl who is still interested in him despite his abusive boozing and womanizing, he takes the opportunity to masturbate. He leaves his bedroom door open and of course Cole comes home and nearly catched him in the act. Although Cole makes an effort to put distance between them, you know by closing a door in his face and then proceeding to work out and moan as if he were in the process of molesting himself, Bryson can’t resist pushing things and forcing himself into the room to offer aid. Chris and Mila come home and almost catch them just as things are beginning to heat up.

Bryson returns to Boston and the story flashes forward three months. He’s missing Cole like crazy, but is surprised one evening when he returns home from work and sees Chris! Chris confesses that he regained his memories before Bryson departed for Boston, but he had to work through his anger and make sense of it all. After talking things through with Mila and his father, he’s totally ready for Bryson to be with Cole. Despite this approval, after a night of riding his dad, Bryson is nervous to meet Chris for brunch the next morning. His train of thought is totally logical:
Does Chris know I just had his father’s dick in my mouth?
Does he know his dad fucked me last night?
Does he know we like to make out with each other’s cum in our mouths?
Does he know he calls me a good boy?
…and I like it?

What I do know is that he needs to take a valium, a cold shower, and some time to grow up.

The story closes with an epilogue. Chris and Mila have moved to Seattle together, Cole and Bryson are entertaining the idea of marriage. Hopefully they don’t adopt any children together. Those kids might make friends who could one day replace Bryson in the scheme of things. I was still left with a few lingering question:

Why is everyone crazy? Bryson’s ex is crazy, Cole’s ex-wife is described as being crazy*, clearly Bryon’s dad is crazy. Chris is struggling with drinking. Filling the story with “crazy” characters doesn’t somehow make the romance more palatable and piling on the drama makes this romance seem even more unhinged. Apparently, Tabitha (Cole’s ex-wife) used to date Bart (Bryson’s dad) but cheated on him with Cole, and it’s just a coincidence that their sons became friends down the line. It’s too much, girl, too much. Not only that, but Chris is led to believe that Cole also cheated on Tabitha with another friend’s father, and that was the reason for their divorce. We only find out in the closing chapters that this is apparently something Bart told Chris to turn him against his father. This seemed unnecessary and quite frankly silly. Why would Chris believe Bart, when he has spent years witnessing how cruel the man is? And honestly, if I were Bart, I’d be mad at Cole too! Fucking my girlfriend and fucking my son!? Now honey, that takes some nerve. Bart’s homophobic though, so screw him.
*Tabitha doesn’t appear on the page until the sixty-fifth chapter in a scene where she hugs Bryson, gives her approval of his relationship with Cole, and assures him that one day Chris will understand. But, she’s supposed to be a crazy, harried ex according to Cole?

Bryson’s ex, Daniel, constantly texts and calls him. Cole urges him to block the number, which would be logical, but Bryson ignores him. Finally Cole answers a video call when they’re having sex and makes Daniel watch. I’m sure this really tickled someone, but not me. There wasn’t enough information provided about Daniel at this point, other than his persistent phone communication which is frequently mentioned and then dropped. Just block the fucking number, Bryson. And grow up, Cole. I’m not sure why this was included, Daniel’s presence (or lack of presence?) doesn’t add anything to the story.

This was definitely a mixed bag of nuts for me. The writing quality was actually really good and the spicy scenes, when they weren’t problematic, were hot! Unfortunately, the dynamic between Cole and Bryson wasn’t so great. Cole has watched this boy grow up, which adds a really sort of gross layer to their story, and is completely aware of the trust and abandonment issues he grapples with as a result of his father’s horrible treatment. There were several instances where he seemingly used these to lure Bryson in only to reject him in the next breath. It comes across as predatory. Bart is presented as a caricature plucked straight from an 80’s primetime soap opera, while Daniel lingers completely in the background without any context. He presents no threat in the narrative and adds nothing other than making Bryson seem sort of pathetic in his inability to block a number. The infantilization of his character through these completely controllable forces adds another layer of ick to his relationship dynamic with Cole that I couldn’t get past. I really think recalculating the relationship between Bryson/Chris could have made this much less icky. Making them friends from college, instead of childhood friends, would have created some distance between Bryson and Cole while also removing some of the unnecessary melodrama that weighs down the story.

There were several moments when I couldn’t believe the way the writer had characters think about and discuss women. Female breasts were referred to as “fat sacks” or something in that vein more than once. Bryson discusses the way the friend group feels the need to look out for Mila, as if she’s not an adult, but then he is seemingly fine with her hooking up with his best friend? I guess a coma just erased all of his shitty behavior that fast. These issues definitely gave the story a weird vibe at times.

This is the most horrendous book I have had the displeasure and misfortune of reading, respecting the author's creative freedom and their wish to twist the storyline however they wish and leaving that part aside.
What really pissed me off was the author's treatment of women throughout the book, I don't understand how people can overlook this disastrous description of women being treated as sex beings, the overuse of the words "tits and boobs" as filler words in the story as soon as a woman as so much as breathes.
Would like to provide some context so people can see it for themselves :

EXHIBIT A

"My stomach lurches as I envision him taking some hot, model-like
woman with fake tits and a fake tan to dinner."

EXHIBIT B
"The girl turns toward me, winks, and grabs her tits."

EXHIBIT C
"Chris has the blond girl against the window, her tits smushed against the
glass."

EXHIBIT D
“Wet t-shirt contest!” Mark’s voice rings through the air as he runs out of
the house, causing everyone out here to look that way. He has a girl over his
shoulder, ass in the air, and a line of guys running out after him, all with
girls in the same position.
People go wild. Hooting and hollering. Cackling
and jumping up and down like money is falling from the sky. The girls get
set down on the driveway by the garage, which is when I notice Chris is
there too. He carried a redhead over. Definitely a different girl than he was
fucking last week.
Mark goes for the hose and doesn't hesitate to spray the girls. They jump
up and down, grabbing their boobs and making them bounce. Seems none
of them have bras on.
And it’s not very warm tonight.

EXHIBIT E
“Never understood the excitement over tits,” I comment, turning back to
my food. If I hurry up and eat all this, I can sneak back in for more and
avoid a line while everyone is out here being mesmerised by nipples.
Tomas huffs out a laugh. “Me either. They’re just… skin bags of fat.”
I laugh pretty hard at that. “I mean, it’s kinda cool they can feed babies
and shit."

EXHIBIT E
"I glance at him and smile, but the emotion coursing
through me has me wanting to throw up.
Mystery date. Fucking her on the desk. Big tits. STDs."

EXHIBIT F
"You know,
since he was banging mystery big tits on Tuesday. Gag."

EXHIBIT G
“You ever been with one of those girls who is all giddy to not be driving?
They sit here with their coffees and their snacks, playing with the radio,
acting like a princess?”

He chuckles, flipping on his blinker to take a turn. “Unfortunately.”
I point at him. “Passenger princess.”
He laughs harder. “You’re nothing like that, thank fuck.”
I shiver. “Why would I be?"

EXHIBIT H
“Looking at boobs?” I question, taking in the photos of women's breasts.
“Man.” He shakes his head, tsking. “Those are fake. The woman had a
double mastectomy and had to get them removed. She got implants but had
no nipples. So I tattooed them on for her.”
My eyes widen, and I get a closer look. “Damn, I thought they were real.”

EXHIBIT I
We both look up from our plates of food. There’s a woman standing at the
end of the table. Pretty with sharp features, high cheekbones, and full lips.
Her hair is dirty blonde, long, and full. Not as full as her boobs. Nice sacks
of fat they are. Still don’t get the appeal.
She’s dressed, in my opinion, a
little too nicely for this dinner"

EXHIBIT J
The door opens and I’m face-to-face with mystery date woman.
The woman Cole fucked. The one who was just sitting on his desk, giggling
like a fucking school girl."

EXHIBIT K
“How is Tabitha?”
Cole gives me a smirk. “Wouldn’t know. Now that Chris is old enough to
make his own damn decisions, I don’t need to talk to her crazy ass
anymore.”
I huff a laugh, brushing my fingers through my hair. I bet it’s a wild mess.
“They’re all crazy, aren’t they?” I ask, moving toward the door. Cole
steps aside so I can move into the hallway.
“Why do you think I’m still single?” he questions.
Good to know.
“Glad I realised I was gay before I figured it out firsthand. Though,” I
say, pausing for a second. “Men aren’t any better.”

I really REALLY SINCERELY HOPE, the author unlearns these bizarre ways of describing women especially since being a woman herself, it was a huge let down.

Author's choice to write dark romance is not the issue at all that is in my humble opinion their right to take such creative liberties in their own book, but the potrayal of women, mentioning how "fake" their tits are, how big they are, how dumb they are, how crazy they are, how they are nothing but used for sex and birth is sooooo dissapointing.

ENDING NOTE :
If I were to describe it one line, it'll be :
A book published in 2024 but feels like it was written by a woman hating man stuck in his ways from somewhere in 18-19th century.

DNF @ 33%

The rules should have been spoken, then there would be less of Bryson waffling between voraciously fornicating with his best friend's dad and then immediately regretting it afterwards. Like Jesus H. Christ man, either screw Cole or don't but stop holding the reader hostage by forcing us to listen to your insufferable indecisiveness. Once or twice, I can forgive, but I got so sick of hearing this man think about "what a bad idea this would be," when he had lewd thoughts about Cole.

And on to the misogyny, because of course that's in this book. There's no overt hatred towards women, as far as I read, at least, but it's the several little comments that got to me. Slut-shaming in the form of calling a girl a red-headed bimbo for sleeping with a guy whom another girl (Mila) has feelings for, (these two girls are not friends, and don't even know each other, so I highly doubt the "bimbo" in question knew about Mila's feelings for Chris, and even if she did, she's under no obligation to stop herself from enjoying a consensual, casual fling because Mila can't woman up and confess her feelings to him, because again, they aren't friends). Slut-shaming in the form of saying another girl had herpes to her face when she and Chris were caught in bed together mid-hookup, just flat out unnecessary and mean. You don't fucking know this girl Bryson, who cares what her sex life entails.

Can't forget this little conversation that screams, "God, women are so annoying, right?":

Bryson - "You ever been with one of those girls who is all giddy to not be driving? They sit here with their coffee and their snacks, playing with the radio, acting like a princess?"

Cole - "Unfortunately [I have]... You're nothing like that, thank fuck."

That scene isn't nearly as bad as the slut-shaming, but it was still noteworthy in what its existence was indicative of: the author's internalized disdain for women.

Also, the romance itself in conjunction with the pacing. There is no reason this book needed to be almost 500 pages. Honestly anything more 300 would be pushing it. With all the bullshit the author decided to include, making the characters fall in love faster would've made me at least get to the 50% mark. There's one line in particular that made me quit right out, without it, who knows how far I could have made it in this monstrosity: "Wouldn't Chris want us both to be happy, even if it meant us together? And I don't mean in a relationship, because that's seriously pushing it. But even just to mess around? Something for fun?" Imagine risking your closest friendship for dick, and not even dick you want to get emotionally attached to. If I was Chris I'd be less offended if my best friend was in love with my father, but if they just wanted to fuck I would slap the shit out of them. Love would be something worth fighting for, but going behind my back just to get the endorphin high from huffing cock fumes just trivializes our friendship, shows a lack of trust between us. I realize now that the author might have meant Chris accepting a romantic relationship between his dad and his best friend would be pushing it, not Bryson wanting a relationship, but it just goes to show how awful Fox's word choice is, given how I might have grossly misunderstood a character's motivations.

Y'know what, let's add one more petty grievance to add a cherry on top of this shit cake, there was a typo on the first page, which in retrospect was a sign of what was to come. "I stare at the text thread on my phone. It's well ast the time I gave my father to respond, but I'm a fool, so I hold on to hope." Yes Bryson, you are a fool, and I hate you almost as much as I hate this book.

Not worth the time

I deeply regret reading the entire book. Normally I’m all for a book to be nice and long, however the narrative in this one dragged on and was overfull of repetitive angst and nonessential detail. It’s like the author decided to cram in as much drama as possible, to the point where it detracted from the main storyline. I get with this trope you need to build up some angst, but this was a bit ridiculous and caused the whole circumstance of Bryson and Cole hooking up and ultimately end up together to seem even less believable.

I understood Bryson’s feelings and uncertainty about the relationship throughout the story, but Cole didn’t make sense. It was unclear why he was attracted to Bryson and frankly the way he treated him and lusted over him was a bit creepy. The age gap dynamic was not done well at all. It’s like the author tried to do the whole “daddy” kink but chickened out of taking it all the way, so we ended up with this weird “good boy” sex play that only happened some of the time.

What annoyed me the most was the large number of typos, a glaring geographical/time zone mistake, and nonexistent world building. Apparently in this universe, the time in Oregon is 3 hrs later than Rhode Island/Boston and it takes upwards of 6 months to get used to the time change. World building should be easy in a contemporary romance because all you really need to do is name an existing city/town or provide minimal description to your made up city/town and you’re good to go. That makes it especially special that this book failed at it so spectacularly. Oregon was clearly just randomly picked as the setting with zero research because nothing was described very well and the city names were all made up except Astoria. How Bryson ended up in Astoria waiting for a ride home after flying from Rhode Island is a mystery. Wherever Bryson and Cole lived, ride shares were abundant and could take you to nearby towns for clubbing, live music, fancy restaurants, Hibachi, and high-rise office buildings. Sure…

From the outset I was intrigued with Bryson and Cole's story. Their one-night stand has you wanting more, and opens up so many questions about the characters, and just how the story will progress.

Then we get the six-month time skip, Bryson moving in with his best friend (and therefore Cole), and it becomes what feels like a taboo, yummy read, filled with "will they/won't they" moments, and in the back of your mind, you're waiting for the other shoe to drop and the secrets to come out.

I enjoyed this book. The storyline was solid; it played at what a lot of new college graduates struggle with, and I felt for Bryson in that sense. It also played well with the whole "I shouldn't" aspect of trying not to fall for the man you've known most of your life, who has saved you from what is an awful situation in your own life (let's face it, Bryson's dad is a grade A asshole).

I loved seeing the growth of the characters through the book. We see Bryson going from almost meek, non-directional and I guess floundering through life, to becoming a strong, independent man who knows exactly what he wants, and isn't afraid to follow his new dreams.

The book is slightly predictable in the sense of Bryson's best friend discovering the couple , but despite that, it was a good read. It's definitely a long read, and I feel there could have been some parts cut/reduced, and at times there was far more telling than showing, but again, I did enjoy it overall. It wrapped up in a satisfying way, and would be interested in reading more from the author in the future.

Thank you to the author for the eARC opportunity.

I have mixed feelings about some aspects of this book, namely the red flags that popped up in the earlier parts of Cole and Bryson’s relationship. There were definitely moments where I felt like it became a bit toxic, but then there were other moments where it felt right. I wish the author had done more to disperse more sweet and loving moments throughout their relationship and not made it so much about a sexual connection. While I bought their chemistry easily, it took a long time for me to feel a true emotion connection (and I still feel like it wasn’t quite there). I think she needed to do a better job at establishing their relationship as Not Daddy Issues for Bryson. There were times where I got the ick, and I felt like the author could have handled it a bit better to smooth that over or rewrite to allow for a more positive relationship. If this were a dark romance, it would have fit, but this was marketed as taboo, so I felt like it could have been done a bit better. I think there should still be feelings of ick at times, due to the plot, but I felt like there were ways to do it better.

I felt like there were aspects that could have been better, but I did end up devouring this quite quickly and enjoyed the cast of characters. I wish some ends had been better tied up, but did find the plot enjoyable, especially the Chris drama, and the will they/won’t they between Chris and Mila. Wish we could have got more time with Onyx, though! He seemed like an interesting guy. And Westley! Loved him! I would have liked a wrap up with Tomas, too, while I’m on the subject.

When I got the opportunity to read this book, I knew I had to review it. I was so excited!

WOW! This book has me going INSANE and you know that feeling when you finish an Ice cream but you feel like you could eat more because it was so good and way too small? This book got me flying.

I absolutely loved the story and can simply not get enough of it. It destroyed me when it finished but here I am, still high from the hot and emotional rollercoaster I was on. This book was everything. Swoony, loving, angsty and of course, HOT!

The flashbacks put the cherry on the top, giving such honey sweet memories that had me swoon for a moment. The love that can't be denied and even when trying, can't be stopped either has me sobbing. I have never in my life related so much to someone as I did to Bryson. That boy has my entire heart. He's such a sweetheart while Cole, phew, I need to take a breath first. That man has my entire mind and body.

Unspoken Rules is about self-love, safety, making one another feel better, loved, worshipped. But of course, love.. especially forbidden love doesn't come without its thorns and crashes.

If you like a sweet honey pancake story, messing with your heart and every bite of hot daddy vibes, you should get this book!

Grab one and get settled down because shit is about to go DOWN!

One sentence that got my heart blooming;

"Is this real?"

DNF @ 6%

"Best friend" is used very loosely here considering Bryson's "best friend" didn't answer his phone call and didn't tell him about the charity event. An because of that lack of camaraderie, I did not understand the "Cole Harper is off limits! For obvious reasons." But were the reasons obvious? You can't fuck your not-so-best-friend's dad?

The constant "Chris is my best friend" thing was annoying considering the story did a very poor job demonstrating that. Apparently Bryson was afraid of pissing off Chris and that he was tempermental. That's best friend material? Honestly those sorts of nuanced relationships take a lot to make sound believable and the author did not go a good job here by constantly throwing out "Chris is my best friend!" as if that makes it true.

Ok wow, this really just gets into the sex. What happened to the "Cole is straight!" thing? The "forbidden" part? Like 80% of what makes a forbidden romance enjoyable is the tension of toeing the line. The allure of the taboo getting closer and closer while the will to fight against gets weaker until the MCs snap and give in. Having Bryson and Cole literally have sex on page 17 not only undermined the whole "omg straight guy" thing, it took away any possible tension building (not that there was much tension to build up to anyway considering how un-forbidden the pairing felt)

Early DNF but I was already not a fan of the writing. The too early sex just sealed the deal.

This is a story about friendship, mixed emotions, experimentation and attraction ✨ After a breakup, Bryson stumble into Cole who is his bestfriend father, they end up having a one night stand. Fast foward 6 months later, Bryson is back in
town and go to live with is bestfriend and Cole. Even after months, Bryson is still attracted to Cole and has flashback to their ons. Both of them are fighting so hard for their attraction for eachother. Troughout the story we see memories of teenage Bryson having a shitty household and Cole being supportive and helping him. The characters are great. Realistically flawed, accurately portrayed, the dialogues are spot on and they couldn't have been more different but they fit well together. Bryson and Cole gave me such a happy feel the entire way through with their domestic moments💛The only thing that bother me at some point was that some chapters were too much detail, my brain was overloaded.

The ending was satifying, I Absolutely recommended. Can we PLEASE have Mila and Chris story? Im sooo curious about them 😍

Thank you author for the opportunity to read and review this book. These are my honest thoughts and opinions.

I just need to start this review with the words, THANK YOU! This is 10/5 stars if that can be a possibility.
Penny Fox, this book was phenomenal! I have never felt such emotion while reading a book. This is a definite book hangover read for sure.
My heart was on a rollercoaster ride of emotions through these 500 pages.
I felt swoons, happy, angry, sad, I felt angst, I felt the passion and fire. It destroyed me!
There have only been a few books in my many years of reading that have truly made me this emotional and I am proud to say that this book is now one of them.
The author did an amazing job bringing you back through memories that made me feel bewilderment for that moment.
The story of self-love, being loved and worshipped. This forbidden love, made me think is this real?
The character development was wonderful. They are realistically flawed in so many ways that I was so emotionally connected to them from the start.

I read this after several acquaintances recommended it once I had finished For the Fans, saying that the taboo relationship between Bryson and Cole reminded them of the one between Avi and Kyran. While the spicy scenes were good, and the taboo nature of the relationship was intense, I don't know if this one worked as well for me. Part of it was with For The Fans, the perspectives of the main characters were much more balanced, and we got to know Avi and Kyran and their internal worlds. Here, Bryson was the dominant narrator, and the snippets we got from Cole's perspective didn't give me enough insight into who he was and what it was about Bryson that he found worth straining the relationship with son over. Furthermore, the reveal at the end about who fed Chris (Cole's son and Bryson's friend) certain information...knowing what we do of that character, why did Chris believe them? A good read, but I don't know if I will be coming back to it.

This was honestly a time that I thought the couple should have stayed split up. There was such unhealthy behavior in their relationship starting when they first got together. Basically Daddy kink with no conversation about it first. And, okay, I've read other taboo relationship books like this before and liked them, but this one really bothered me. If Bryson had met Chris in college rather than in kindergarten, I would have felt much better about Chris's dad Cole getting together with Bryson, especially since Bryson stayed at their house a lot growing up including his entire senior year of high school. And Bryson should have been seeing a therapist due to growing up with a mentally abusive dad. I'm not even going to get into the soap opera level of connections between the secondary characters in the story either. This book was seriously like a car wreck I couldn't look away from.

This book would've been greatly improved if about 200 pages had been edited out. There was so much back and forth. I want him, I don't want him, I need him, I don't need him, my friend's feelings come first, my feelings come first, I'm going to give in to temptation, I'm not going to give in to temptation. And it happened over and over and over again. Each chapter flips back and forth for hundreds of pages. It was so repetitive and boring. But besides being way too long, I didn't think the characters were well drawn either. The majority of the story is told from one MC's POV, but he reads very one-dimensional to me. We only see the other MC's POV a few times, and that absence was keenly felt. He has no development beyond beefcake. We don't see any of the pivotal scenes from his POV or understand him as a character. Overall, this just wasn't the book for me.

It is messy. It is complicated. It nearly sent me into an anxiety attack. 10/10 Would highly recommend!

A book has not caused me this much anxiety since the last 100 pages of SJM’s ACOWAR (iykyk). I kept waiting, with bated breath, with every turn of the page, for the other shoe to drop, for everything to fall to pieces. Then I waited for the fix, for the healing, for the HEA. At 85% my hopes waned. Maybe I wasn’t getting a HEA. Maybe that was the whole point, something can feel so right and still not work. I’ll let you discover how it ends.

This was my first book from this author but my god it won’t be the last. I loved it, I hated it, I hated that I loved it and loved that I hated it. I finished the last page at 9:40 this morning. It’s now 3:40 and I have not stopped thinking about it all day. This is the mark of a great story.

Cole and Bryson were perfect in every forbidden way.

Bryson grew up in an unhappy home, and finds comfort in the home of his best friend. Cole was always a safe place for Bryson when he was a kid. Then he grows up and Cole becomes that safe place again but for a different reason.
After Bryson comes back to his hometown he runs into Cole and things take a very unexpected turn. Bryson finds himself wanting his best friends dad and doesn’t know what to do about it.

Cole is so yummy, the dirty mouth on that man. 🥵
Bryson is sweet and oh so broken. Cole swoops in and starts to put his pieces back together.

This book will give you all the feels-happy,sad,frustration, and like you need to jump your partner.

I absolutely devoured this book and can’t wait for more from this author.

Another new to me author. I did like this story very much even with the red flags about Cole's behavior towards Bryson. I admit I kept on saying that Bryson needed to see a therapist and that no one ever suggested it so he would not keep hearing his father's voice in his head and it would help with his self-esteem which was perplexing. I also didn't really buy that Chris forgave them even when he found out that Cole had not cheated on his mother like Bryson's father had told him. I did like that he was able to get a job and when an opportunity came to move to Boston he did and was successful so he did demonstrate some growth.

Bryson is waiting for his father to pick him up but is left stranded. He spies his best friend's father in the bar also. Cole offers Bryson a room for the night where they allow their feelings for each other come out, but Bryson wakes up alone. Six months later, Bryson moves into Cole's house when his father kicks him out for being gay. Chris, his best friend, is glad Bryson has moved back to the West Coast from the East Coast. They are practically brothers. Bryson and Cole resume their relationship. It is fraught with danger. After one bad blow-up, everything falls apart. Will Cole and Bryson get together? Can they make it on their own?

I enjoyed this story. It is very emotional. I like both Bryson and Cole. They are broken but good for each other. Bryson's dad is a POS. Chris, Cole's son, is also a jerk who has the world by the tail and blows it. I liked seeing how the break-up affects Bryson and Cole. They keep putting others ahead of them. When tragedy strikes, we see how both father and son need Bryson.

I liked the group of friends Bryson and Chris had. Mira helps Bryson see Chris as he is. I like the ending, but I do not think Chris should have been so prominent in their relationship, but maybe he was crying out for help. I was glad he redeemed himself.

I look forward to reading more of Penny Fox.

Dreamy, steamy and kinda kinky!!!😍😍😏

Deliciousness!😉 Bryson has been damaged and between his head because of his very messed up father, he kinda just spins out all the time. And Cole is dynamic in regards to their situationship. But Cole has his own problems as their worlds collide. These MC's have depth and so much color. So beautifully sexy as they invite you into their chaos! This crazy ride will have your head spinning in the most delectable way! Dizzy, fun and sexy as heck!!!😘 I highly recommend!!!😁

left me with mixed feelings

The book begun strong - likable mc's and interesting plot but it got a little too... dramatic with everybody being selfish and thinking themselves and so much hostility that the whole thing needed to be overwrited - I hot annoyed to character after character though some redeemef them selves but some just didn't do a come back and thats why i give 3 stars.
Easy read and story had hood bones but unfortunately the delivery didn't speak to me.

Fucking Hell.. It started so good but turned out so bad and I'm really pissed that I spent so much time with that.

I really enjoyed for the most part and was invested, even though it dragged on pretty much from the start. But at some point it was just the same thing over and over again.

Chris, the "best friend", was such an asshole, I can't understand why Bryson stayed so much on his side instead of his fathers, who he fell in love with. About 90% of the books issues could've been resolved if they all just sat down and talked. But nooo just everyone kept running away.

Alcohol plays a big part in the story. While Chris very obviously abuses it, I think all three of them have a problem. Bryson and Cole constantly had to get drunk in the beginning to have sex. I seriously have trouble believing the consent. And not only that, they also open a beer on every imaginable instance.

Bryson's ex keeps calling through the story. Why?! Just block the fucking number. And also wake up and see how toxic the relationship with Cole is as well. He never really listens to what Bryson says. He's not comfortable with feeling like a freeloader, but it is a great idea to buy him a car.

Also Cole really gets father of the year award for flying out to his ex (Bryson left after Chris found out about them), when his son is comatose in a hospital.

If there's ever a book couple who really shouldn't be together in the end, its those two.

Swoon

This is so good. There are some serious topics and situations that might make some readers uncomfortable but I loved this. I loved the passion the uncertainty and the seriousness of the situation. I loved the drama and the struggles and the development of love. I wasn't familiar with this author but I am now and I would read more.

Roller coaster!

This book was an emotional roller coaster from the start and I was fully invested. It’s not a perfect 5 star only for the fact that I didn’t love the end but I truly did not know what to expect but overall this book was entertaining and had me wanting to flip the page every time 👏🏻👏🏻

Great read! I had trouble putting it down. And you know it’s a good story when you find yourself thinking about the characters when you’re not reading the book. :)
