Parisian Ghosts #2

Ghosts of the Crusade

Rate this book
Lies, deception, and betrayal — if you thought the living were bad, wait until you meet the dead.

After narrowly escaping the catacombs of Paris, I plan to stay away from ghosts. I will, right after I’ve settled a newly departed in the afterlife, got rid of the ghost police unit who have taken an interest in my talents, and completed on last favour. Of course, with my luck, that last favour is a bitch.
Somehow I promised the last Grandmaster of the Templars, who was burned at the stake for devil worship, an introduction to my famous dead friends at the Panthéon. Before I know it, I’m chasing lost treasures, righting seven-century-old wrongs, and getting sucked into a spectral power struggle that could forever blur the lines between life and death.
Everybody wants my help, but not all of them need me alive.

Urban Fantasy with a French twist. If you like cave-crawling adventures, hopeless romantics, and ghosts, you'll enjoy Ghosts of the Catacomb, the first instalment of the Parisian Ghosts series. Travel to Paris today to embark on your catacomb adventure.

Ghosts of remembrance are the strongest.

The second book in this wonderful series opens in Paris as Alix is deciding what to do with her Ghost boyfriend. Her life has been turned upside down once again and the various forces are all intent on using her for their own good. Unfortunately, none of it seems to be good for Alix or her future. The Templar De Molay wants an audience with the leaders of the ghost world to bring them all together but for what reason? Her boyfriend won’t leaver her alone even though he’s a ghost and the Ghost Police may have n ulterior motive for finding her ghost. It’s enough to drive someone crazy but not Alix who has seen more than anyone the power of the ghosts and their beauty as well. The ending is a shocker so no spoilers but book 3 should be another corker.

Ghosts of the Crusade(Parisian Ghosts #2) by Janna Ruth is a great book and I definitely recommend. The characters were well written and there was also the right amount of action and surprises. IN this book Alix discovers she made a promise to the wrong ghost. How is she going to get out of this one... if she does?

Janna Ruth is an amazing author! I am in awe of her storytelling. Her characters are so relatable, her imagination is incredible, the plot is complicated and fascinating. I could barely tear myself away. I must immediately begin the next book to prevent a massive book hangover and to spend more time with my new friends!

The plot thickens! At the end of the last book I thought I had a pretty good handle on who the good guys and bad guys were, but now I’m not so sure! I’m suspicious of GoPol, and what they’re really up to. And is the Chauvelier a bad guy after all? He definitely knows more than he’s telling. And there’s also the mean guy from Alix’s class. Something about him seems off to me.

And then there are all of Alix’s friends, both alive and dead 😱 If you were worried that you wouldn’t see Gaspar again after the last book, then fear not. He’s a major character in this one. I wish Malou had been in more of the scenes. I love hedgehogs 🥰 Gaby is still Alix’s loyal friend and sidekick, and Alix’s sister Helene still has a fraught relationship with Alix. I’d be very surprised if the author didn’t have sisters. She really captures the relationship between sisters very well.

I’ll try to be vague to avoid spoilers, but the whole Whisper Ghosts thing was very interesting, and the places of power where the ghosts gather has me wondering where this story is headed. And what are the ghosts of the Panthenon hiding? There was a fairly large reveal at the end regarding one of the characters, and I’m dying to see what happens next!

I really enjoyed book 1 and not much later I picked up book 2 eager to continue the story. Ghosts of the Crusade picks up pretty much after book 1 ended. I like how there was a new ghosts to help, but besides that it very much felt like a continuation of the first book in most ways. I thought this worked well and I really enjoyed reading more about Alix and the ghosts.

Alix got quite the shock at the end of book 1 and she struggles a lot with that in this book. She promised to help a ghost and is working on that. The plot is engaging and I wanted to keep reading. There are some interesting reveals about both ghosts and ghosts whisperers in this book. There is more danger, more ghost problems, more romance and more of her cute hedgehog pet.

One of the things I like most about this book is Alix herself, she is kind and wants to help ghosts. And most of all she sees them as real people and values them. I liked that about her even though those she works with don't see ghosts the same way she does. I like seeing her interact with the ghosts. The setting in France is great too.

It's just such an engaging read. I wanted to keep reading, see what happened next and see how everything would play out. The ending again brings some big changes and I while I rarely binge read a series, I already started book 3 right after I finished this one.

To summarize: Ghosts of the Crusade was an engaging second book in this series. After the ending of book 1 I was eager to read book 2 and see how things would go. Alix has to deal with the big reveal she got at the end of book 1 and there's another ghost she promised to help. I like how kind and caring Alix is and how she genuinely wants to help the ghosts. She also seem them as real people and values them. There are some exciting developments in this book as well as some big reveals and I couldn't wait to see how those would all play out in book 3 and thus already started the next one. The fresh take on the genre with the way the ghosts whispering works and the France setting is well done and the writing, plot and characters keep me reading.

I love the usual urban fantasy setup with shifters, vamps and fae, etc. But my favourite stories are those that immerse deeply in a single aspect of the UF world. This is one of those books. Janna Ruth takes ghosts and builds an amazing premise around the concept, explaining why they exist, why only some of the deceased become ghosts, and what challenges ghosts themselves face in their beyond-the-grave existence. Book One of the series, Ghosts of the Catacombs, sets the stage nicely for this, but Book Two, Ghosts of the Crusade, goes so much deeper. Alix is pitted against a fearsome foe in the form of Jaques de Molay, the leader of the Knights Templar, burned at the stake in 1314, but an even greater challenge is her own love life, which is a massive paranormal mess. The setting of Paris and the catacombs continues to be absolutely fascinating, but what kept me on the edge of my seat was not knowing which of the many super characters could be trusted. Ruth twists everything around in the most delicious way, leaving me desperate for more.

I loved this sequel to Ghosts of the Catacombs. In this second book in the series, we find our poor heroine trying to decide whether she should follow her head or her broken heart. She has more encounters with the somewhat strange agent who works for the mysterious GoPol - I'm getting suspicious about them! And other encounters with the rather scary Chevalier d'Os. She gets caught up once more with the evil Knight Templar, but luckily she has her friends (and ghosts) to come to her rescue. I highly recommend this book to all Urban Fantasy lovers. Hopefully we won't have to wait too long for the next installment!

Back in the world of the ghost whisperer Alix in the Catacombs with some hair rising interludes. Alix is devastated to realise her new love is a ghost. Officer Roubert or Sébastion features more, helping her, but does he have ulterior motives as a GoPol agent and an interesting new ghost, Dix, Sébastion's teenage ghost. Molay, last Grand Master of the Templar Knights became a major problem, but help came up in an unexpected way.

Ghost of the Crusades starts with Alix realizing someone she had been collaborating with is a ghost. It’s not as intuitive as you might think, as she can see, hear and touch ghosts. Janna takes us again into the catacombs (triggering my claustrophobia as she is awesome with her descriptions) but to my relief we do spend time above ground in Paris. Of course Malou is great at calming any situation! There are definitely a few twists and turns (not just in the catacombs) and an ending I didn’t see coming (well not all of it)

I really like this series and author. We go on some crazy adventures!

This book was a bit slow and repetitive in some places as Alix deals with grief. But it also had quite a few twists and turns and did not end as I expected. I love the taste of Paris and learning more about the historical figures. Can’t wait for book 3!!

Totally Enjoyable

Second book is as good as the first one. Imaginative and well written. Interesting characters and touching moments that make it a really great read. The ending has me reaching for the third book immediately.

Alix’s life has been turned upside down when Gaspar’s truth is revealed and she learns there are more ghost whisperers. Not only that but there is a secret division of the police known as GoPol. There is also the promise she made to the Last Grand Master of the Templars. The Grand Master was burned at the stake for devil worship and all he wants is an audience with the ghosts of the Pantheon, who refuse to meet him. This promise will lead Alix back into the catacombs and straight into a fight she doesn't want to be a part of.

I said it in my review of the first book, but Alix is too kind for her own good. She's being torn between the ghosts, Gaspar, the GoPol and the Chevaliar. All because she's trying a favour. I'm so curious about the Chevalier now. I kinda think he's ex-GoPol, it would explain so much. And I definitely don't trust the GoPol, there just seems to be so much Sebastian and Dix are holding back. I'm not sure where the story is going but am excited to see. Also that last line, what a cliffhanger. Will be impatiently waiting for the next book.
