What this book is good for: Giving you an idea of just how many hikes are along the Oregon coast and an idea of where to find them.

What this book is not good for: Accurate information about hike distances and difficulty. Insights into seasonal conditions (such as crossing rain-fed streams).

We took a few hikes in early November 2016.
*Fort Stevens has more hikes than advertised. We headed to Fort Stevens State Park near Astoria to walk the beach (p34), but discovered from a park map that there were many miles of trails in the inland coast forest, so we put away the book and investigated those instead.

*Hike 1 is shorter than described. Then we tried Hike 1, Cathedral Tree, and learned that it's quite a bit shorter than described (0.3 mile to tree, not 0.5; 1.0 mile to tree and then column, not 1.5). The Cathedral Tree hike advises that the trailhead is harder to find if you start from the top of the hill ... but we saw two obvious, large signs at the hilltop clearly directing hikers down to the Cathedral Tree.

*Start Hike 14 at Ecola Point, not Indian Point. Finally, we went to Ecola State Park near Cannon Beach for Hike 14. The guidebook advises you to drive all the way through the park to Indian Point and hike back to Ecola Point. There was no mention of the gushing stream at Indian Point that you had to wade through or the slow, windy, narrow road (sometimes one lane) to drive there. We wound up back at Ecola Point (right at the park entrance station, so it's an easier and faster drive) and hiked from there (with no stream crossing to start things off). If you hiked all the way to Indian Point, you could turn around before the stream, no wading necessary. But we didn't get that far, because only the first mile of the hike from Ecola Point was a "difficulty 2" hike; after that it disintegrated into slippery clay mud, failing boardwalks, scrambles up roots ... and we'd seen plenty of the glory from the bluff viewpoints.

So my impression is that this is an interesting book to get you started finding hikes along the Oregon coast. But then you'll want another book or website with more accurate and detailed information to help you choose particular hikes and navigate them successfully.
