Ever since the opening of the door between Earth and the fairy realm, magic and mythological creates mix once more.
It’s been a year of miracles and disasters as the technologically advanced society learns to live with forces long deemed imaginary. Gillie, full of wild youthful energy, leaves her family in England to roam and explore the earth. Lindsay Wells volunteers for an outreach program in Portland for homeless and transient youth. A former street kid herself, she quickly realizes Gillie’s in trouble. Beings that resonate with magic and enmity have chased Gillie across the US but neither knows why. A desperate scramble to help Gillie escape her pursuers sends the two on a dangerous journey, hopping freight trains and hoping for answers.
A fan-geek and internet junkie, D. Jordan Redhawk is a passionate writer of lesbian romance, covering multiple genres. She highlights the outsider, revealing that we are not all that different from one another. Her books are published by PD Publishing and Bella Books.
An entertaining new read by Redhawk. This is an urban fantasy book, but it is a little on the lighter side. Not too gritty or overly dark, a feel good read for the most part. While this is not really a sequel, it takes place in the same world as Darkstone. It has all new characters and takes place about a year or so after Darkstone. I thought Darkstone was just okay, not one of my favorites by Redhawk. I enjoyed this book much more. You do not have to read Darkstone first. Redhawk explains enough to know what is going on. If anything after reading this, you might want to go back and read Darkstone for the history of this fantasy world. But it is not necessary to enjoy this story.
In a world were the fae and mythological creatures of all shapes and sizes, live with humans, this new world is a much different place. Gillie, has fled her home in England to travel the world. A bit of a vagabond, she is now backpacking in the USA. Lindsay, volunteers her time cooking and serving meals to the homeless. She was homeless herself, and now wants to give back. She meets the intriguing Gillie and can't stop the attraction. But a possible relationship is put on the back burner when it appears a paranormal creature is trying to kill Gillie. Can Lindsay and Gillie escape with their lives, and find a way to fight back?
As I said above, this really was a good entertaining read. I enjoyed it for sure. Redhawk writes really well, and it is easy to get immersed in the book. There is some good exciting parts with the mythological creatures, but the whole book isn't full speed. You learn a lot about what it is like to be a homeless traveler, which was actually pretty interesting. And during that time you watch a strong friendship grow. The romance is a slow building one. It is much more on the sweet side, with a few make-out scenes, but no sex scenes. Both characters are very likeable, and I enjoyed them as a couple.
My only real complaint, is that Redhawk did not dive into Lindsay's past more. Something big happened that she became homeless, a few years back. Her past is hinted at, but you never really find out what happened. I think it would have explained her character a bit more to know. Her character grows a lot in this story, and it was nice to see, I just wanted a little more background.
Redhawk, has created a really good base for a fantasy world. She could easily write many more books that take place in this world. While I would love to see more with these characters, I'd be happy to read any books that take place here. And while I didn't love the Darkstone book, I'd like to see what Darkstone (the character) is up to now. I think urban fantasy fans will be entertained by this read. And I can't wait to read what Redhawk writes next.
An ARC was given to me by Bella, for a honest review.
