This book was recommended by the author of "Old Filth", Jane Gardam. I don't believe the books are on equal footing.
Colombo Heat was set during World War II in Ceylon(currently Sri Lanka). The main character, Guy Tancred is transferred to Sri Lanka to assist in the rubber production for the war and other clandestine tasks given to him by his superior. His older brother has run a rubber plantation for years and is married to Jill, whom Guy falls in love.
The story of all their lives unfolds as the Japanese are heading towards the island with the aim of conquering and invading.
After one air attack and much drama, ultimately the Japanese bypass this little gem of an island.
Also, ultimately, Jill recognizes that Guy is very emotionally hollow and better for her to follow her instincts and say adieu to him and continue her life in Sri Lanka.

Wonderfully evocative of a time long gone, this could be an epic TV miniseries. It's modern in a way Farrell and Maughan are not. It's a pity Christopher has passed away without the fame he deserved while inferior writers pocket the zillions. Rereading now its like slipping onto a John le Carre book.

This is an excellent evocation of Ceylon, particularly from the viewpoint of British residents, facing the threat of the Japanese in 1942. I found it highly intelligent and witty, perhaps reminiscent of J. G. Farrell.

I read this a while ago, but remember it to be a powerful story of Colombo during World War II. A good read.
