Marta Perry is a Pennsylvania-based author of over 35 novels, many of them inspirational romances. She uses her rural Pennsylvania life and her Pennsylvania Dutch heritage in writing her books, especially in her Pleasant Valley Amish series for Berkley Books and her new Amish-set suspense series for HQN Books.
Marta and her husband live in a centuries-old farmhouse in a quiet central Pennsylvania valley. They have three grown children and six beautiful grandchildren, and when she's not busy writing her next book, she's usually trying to keep up with her gardening, baking for church events, or visiting those beautiful grandkids.
Too busy widowed father hires niece of woman who has cared for the family for years. While she is having replacement surgery housekeeper asks her teacher niece to fill in for her since summer is upon them. She neglects to tell him her niece is coming. Did she forget or is she playing cupid? How will the father receive her? How will the quiet, untrusting young son receive her? Nice story.
This is the third book in the “Hometown Heroes” miniseries by Marta Perry. We return to tiny Bedford Creek, PA, where Alexander Caine is trying to find a way to keep his father’s business afloat, since many of the townspeople work for him, directly or indirectly. He’s recovering from an accident and has a sweet housekeeper, Maida, who unexpectedly needs to have surgery. While Maida recuperates, her niece Paula Hansen comes to Alex’s home to serve as his housekeeper/au pair.
There’s some chemistry between the two: they’d shared a kiss previously, and Alex finds himself drawn to her. However, Paula worries about appearances and fears that she won’t fit into Alex’s world (the trope of poor girl/rich boy). Alex is also neglecting his young son, who begins acting out and eventually does something that puts both Alex and Paula in danger. At some point in the story, I would have liked to see Alex at least try to discipline his own child.
Fans of Marta Perry’s work will enjoy this book. It’s a sweet, simple small-town romance.
More realistic and down to earth than usual Christian books. I liked that it wasn't love at first sight...within a few days...etc. Main topic of trying to prioritize what is truly important. It was good.
