Priscilla Cummings’s Chadwick the Crab series has been a staple of Chesapeake juvenile literature for more than a decade. Now Ms. Cummings turns her hand to another classic genre, the ABC book, this one with a Chesapeake regional flavor. From “A is for anchor” to “Z is for a zephyr,” the sights, sounds, and feel of the Bay come through to the youngest of readers. This is a perfect way to introduce toddlers and preschoolers to the wonders of the alphabet and instill in them a love of the Chesapeake. (Also review its companion book, Chesapeake 1-2-3.) One of my all-time favorites. Priscilla Cummings is a great author for children. I give a copy of this book to all children born in our family. A great-nephew was visiting and we read this numerous times.

This is a delightful book. I’m impressed that the author found examples of things related to Chesapeake Bay to illustrate each letter of the alphabet. Living in a seacoast town on the other side of the U.S., I appreciate all the sea motifs. The illustrations are great and the rhymes cute. A good book for kids living inland to learn what the sea is all about, plus learning their ABCs.

The "I is for Indians" page makes me cringe, but otherwise the book is cute.
