As the holidays draw near, she’s missing him—again and again. . . .
Emily feels like her life’s been shattered into tiny pieces and glued back together the wrong way. With her heart still aching after her sister’s sudden death, Emily has stepped up to care for her nine-year-old nephew, Felix. Trying to do the right thing, she also ended her two-year relationship with Rory, who wasn’t ready to settle down, so she could focus on Felix.
But when she takes Felix into London to see the Christmas displays, he wanders off and the two of them wind up on a train to Leeds . . . where Rory just happens to live. The long ride will give her time to reflect on whether she made a mistake letting Rory go. But as Rory embarks on his own journey at the same time, will the three of them manage to cross paths in time for Christmas?
I have been looking forward to reading this for a long time now. Lucy Mitchell's second book was eagerly anticipated! Emily is not looking forward to Christmas. It is far too different to Christmases past, with loved ones no longer around her and a new responsibility on her head. That of a carer to her nine-year-old nephew Felix, and a rather overexcited dog, Baxter, who has a penchant for running off with her underwear! Things used to be so good between them, but nowadays, they spend forever fighting, bickering, and generally having no fun whatsoever. She misses Vivi, her sister, who was tragically taken from her. And she desperately misses her ex, Rory, though she doesn't really know that. But Felix does. And he tries his hardest to help in his own nine-year-old way. The story is set over the space of a couple of days, and trains feature heavily as the characters end up on eventful journeys to try and find their own happy endings, with so many near misses! This story is written in multiple POVs; Emily, Rory and Felix. Can I start by saying I loved having Felix's side of the story? Felix is a beautifully complex character with his secrets and wishes, and the ideas he has to help his little family be happy are just epic, cute and kinda crazy! I just wanted to hug Emily and tell her things would be okay. It's a lot to take on responsibility for a child, even if that child is your nephew. And Rory. Bless him. He's suffering his own grief and trying to overcome everything without the woman he loves by his side. My heartstrings were tugged from the book's first pages as we were thrown into the midst of chaos, with arguments, tantrums (and Baxter running off with Emily's lingerie!) Grief shows in many different ways and the way Lucy has explored this through various angles is sensitive and heart-rending, but there are brilliant dashes of humour to keep the reader upbeat. I wanted that happy ending and kept turning pages, on the edge of my seat, as they very nearly got there... then something else happened to stop the inevitable, but each and every twist kept me hooked through to the end. An incredibly wonderful story. Funny, poignant and hopeful. I can't wait for the next Lucy Mitchell story!
Oh my word, journey is the word with this one, both literally and metaphorically. It is packed full of emotion as Felix and Emily navigate their new relationship as she swaps the role of fun loving Auntie to substitute mum. It’s a transition that neither is finding easy as they’re also coping (or not) with the loss of a fun loving mother and sister. Meanwhile, Rory has been side-lined for not being ready to settle down, though only he knows whether that was an accurate assessment.
The onset of Christmas brings everything to a head in a way that none of them saw coming thanks to Felix and his master plan, which may or may not have been de-railed along the way.
This was a lovely read, with the heart-break and sadness perfectly balanced by the comedy and humour injected by Felix and his friends along with Baxter the inappropriately behaved sausage dog. While it definitely met the rom-com brief with all the misdirection and misunderstandings it also dealt with a much deeper theme of grief and loss, not just for Felix and Emily, but also for Rory as his back story is revealed. What really pulled at my heart strings was the beautiful friendship that had developed between Rory and Felix and the secret they shared, and don’t get me started on Felix’s phone calls to his mum. This had all the feels and is another candidate for a perfect Christmas film.
I’ll Miss You This Christmas is the first book I’ve read by Lucy Mitchell. She did not disappoint. It is an emotional and heart pulling story which I loved.
The story opens up to the chaos of Emily and Felix. We learn that Emily is Felix’s aunt and is now his legal guardian. Her sister Viví was tragically killed in an accident. Emily left her job to start her own clothing business from home. She did this so she can be home for Felix and not disrupt the routine he’s ever known. Felix is nine years old and dealing with the loss of his only parent. Emily is newly single, but misses her ex-boyfriend, Rory, but doesn’t truly realize it yet. She thinks she’s doing him a favor so that he can have his single life.
This book is written with different POVs, Emily, Felix, and Rory. My favorite POV is Felix. At such a young age, he is incredibly funny and smart. He pulled my heartstrings and had me in tears. I just wanted to comfort him and tell him things would be okay.
This story brought out so many emotions in me. I applaud Lucy Mitchell for doing a great job in doing that. This really was a fabulous read and I look forward to reading more by Lucy!
Thank you to Bloodhound Books for this advanced copy. All opinions are my own.

We meet Emily, who is grieving after the unexpected death of her beloved sister Vivi. Emily is now the legal guardian of her nine-year-old nephew Felix and Baxter (a rather active dog with love for Emily’s underwear). Previously, in a happy relationship with Rory, Emily thought it would be the right thing to split up with him, thinking that he wasn’t ready for a serious relationship.
Emily moved into the house of her sisters to look after her nephew. She left her old job and started her own dressmaking business, working from home to look after Felix and Baxter. Unfortunately, they spend they time mostly fighting & bickering.
It becoming clear that both Felix and Emily miss Rory in their life’s even though Emily does her best to deny it. This leads to Felix taking action on his own to reunite them with Rory.
The story of Emily, Felix, and Rory takes place in just a matter of a few days and is written with different POV’s. My favourite POV had to be Felix. He is incredibly funny and smart. It melted my heart how he left video messages for his mum on her old phone.
Throughout the story, we find out that Rory isn’t happy either and is dealing with his own past grief.
Lucy Mitchell captures the conflict that can arise when a relationship changes overnight well. Coping with your own grief while all over sudden responsible for a young child can never be easy and settling into each other life’s surely can take some time. It highlights that communications are important.
I’ll Miss you This Christmas is a beautiful & heart-warming story about second chances.
I'll Miss You This Christmas was a very loving, emotional and heart wrenching read. After the sudden and unexpected death of her sister, Emily is now the legal guardian of her nephew Felix, along with being newly single, Emily is struggling with life so to get through this she launches her own business. This book has been written with different POVs, my favourite being Felix. For a 9 year old, he is incredibly funny and smart and I absolutely love his cheekiness.
Felix knows he must do something to help his Aunty Emily out so he does the one thing he can think of, by concocting a plan to get Emily on board. I fought various emotions during this read and I found myself actually silently pleading with the Author that Emily and Rory needing to find each other before they returned to their own homes. This really was a magical read!
Thank you for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Brilliant timing reading a Christmas book in a mini heatwave but it was well worth diving in thinking about Christmas 🎁
I love seeing London at Christmas and this book takes you there and can see the hustle and bustle of London especially the train station.
This is a story about finding love after loss. Emilys sister has died, giving her sole guardianship of her nephew Felix. Emily has dumped her boyfriend Rory to focus her attention on Felix, little does she know Felix and Rory have their own life together and that's taken away from Felix after Rory leaves London behind for Leeds but Felix believes this Christmas, it's his sole mission to reunite Rory and his Aunt together so they can live happily ever after again!!
Will Felix get his wish, or has Rory moved on after being dumped by Emily???
Richard Curtis, you need to read this! Seriously. What a cracker. I could totally see this mesmerising story play out on screen. How can this be a debut? Lucy Mitchell writes with the kind of flow and confidence of a top romance author many books down the line. IMYTC was simply unputdownable. Moving, engaging and so creative. I loved the premise. I fell in love with ALL the characters. I often struggle with kids appearing for huge chunks in books (despite having my own little darlings!) and stifle several yawns. Not Felix! What a cutie and I loved how wise and ahead of his time he was. I loved his spontaneity too. He had so much to teach the grownups. Really looking forward to seeing what this author comes up with next. I honestly think this will be my favourite read of the year. It might be early to say that, but it was incredible.
I'm so glad I had the opportunity to read this via Bloodhound Books as it's probably my favourite Christmas romance story EVER!
Tell me I'm not the only one who fell in love with Felix? I thought he was autistic at first, but turns out he was just a little boy grieving for his mum and he was missing aunty Emily's ex Rory, and nothing was going to stand in his way of reuniting them. His video messages to his Mum were adorable and his understanding she was 'working' for God's newspaper a clever way of telling a young child about the loss of a parent.
There were so many wonderful, likeable characters throughout the book and Baxter, the dog was adorable too.
This is the story that I would love to see made into a film, I can already envisage my cast of characters now.
I'll Miss You This Christmas is a gorgeous, heartwarming romance of second chances, love, loss and ballet.
I’ve waited far too long for a new @lucy_mitchell_author and I can safely say that I haven’t been disappointed.
This book has given me laugh out loud moments, emotional moments and been a complete rollercoaster.
I fell in love with this book from just the cover. I am fully ready to embrace Christmas reads and love stories which steal your heart.
I wasn’t prepared for the emotional rollercoaster I would be taken on. However, I would happily experience this all over again. It has been fantastic from beginning to end.
I love how lovely and heartwarming this book has been to read. I have adored every thing about this book. There is nothing negative I can say about this book.
I enjoyed this sweet Christmas story. This is not my first book by this author but it is one of my favorites. I enjoy this author's writing skills and her attention to details that make her story pop. This is a well written story about Emily and her nephew. When her nephew goes missing, will she be able to find him in time for Christmas? I enjoyed how the characters pulled me into their world with ease. They are connectable and just brought the story to life. They add so much to the story's entertainment value. This is a holiday story that will get you in the mood for Christmas. I really enjoyed reading this book and I highly recommend it.
This was a very emotional tale with multiple POVs (both the MCs and the FMC's 9 year old nephew that she is a legal guardian of) and too much chaos! A second chance romance, found family, meddling by a nine-year-old, all put together in the most emotional way. The only thing I was bummed about is the way things were cleared between the MCs towards the end - about Lawrence, Anna etc. It could have been done better and elaborately in my opinion. And also, I felt at times the MMC's POV was confusing - I didn't know which was happening now and which was a flashback in the way things were written and got confused at times.
Thanks to Vicky at Bloodhound Books for sending me an ARC copy of this title in exchange for an honest review.
I’ll Miss You This Christmas follows Emily, who is struggling with the death of her sister as she is now the sole guardian of her nephew, Felix, and his dog, Baxter. The day before Christmas Eve, Emily, Felix and Baxter decide to take a trip to London so that Felix can see the Christmas displays. However, he wanders off and gets onto a train heading for Leeds and in search of Emily’s ex-boyfriend, Rory. At the same time, Rory is also taking a train intent on heading back to Emily. Will the four of them manage to meet up when the snow storms are determined to halt the transport network in England?
This book reminded me of the music video for Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan’s single, Especially For You. The whole video showcases the missed opportunities of Minogue and Donovan meeting, constantly being in the same place at slightly different times and never quite meeting each other until right at the end. This is what happens throughout the whole of the novel between Emily and Rory as they embark on many train rides in order to get to each other.
As far as second chance romances go, this one delves into Emily and Rory’s past, as well as the reasons why they didn’t work out originally. Also, the novel touches upon grief of losing a sibling and how it has an impact on your life. Personally, I would have liked to have read more snippets from Emily and Rory’s past instead of being told about their relationship and how much in love they were. An easy read with a huge range of supporting characters that are all interlinked somehow. It does get frustrating at times with how much of the novel is spent on a train.
I'll miss you this Christmas is a heartwarming romantic novel about a lady called Emily who is left in charge of her nephew when her sister suddenly dies. In the midst of all that she is nursing a broken heart but when her loveable nephew Felix wants to go and visit London she finds herself wondering if there's a way she can win Rory back. Felix is my favourite character a charismatic confident child who cares a lot about his auntie Emily and Rory. I absolutely love this story of second chances and can't wait to read more by Lucy. Beautiful and heartwarming 5 stars
A story of love and loss, the pain of bereavement and the strength of love. With hints of Sleepless in Seattle and Billy Elliott, it is an unusual, but very readable feel good Christmas tale. The author captures the conflict that can arise when relationships change unexpectedly. Coping with personal loss whilst helping a child to come to terms with the death of his mother would never be easy. Sometimes just wanting to do your best is not enough. Understanding each other’s feelings and being honest is the first step, and having support makes everything easier. A moving and compassionate novel.
Emily is not looking forward to Christmas. Her life was turned upside down when her sister died suddenly and left her responsible for her darling (but deeply and understandably depressed) nephew, Felix. On top of that, she has started a vintage clothing business and split with her long-term boyfriend, believing he was not up to sudden parenthood. Everything is a bit of a mess. When Felix insists that they take a Christmas trip to see the London decorations, he secretly plans a reunion for the couple. Love triumphs in the end. A wonderful Christmas romance for the holiday reader.
Meant to finish this by Christmas—I always read a light/fun, romantic Christmas novel each December. This one was better than most in that it focused primarily on the relationship between a child and his aunt in addition to the cheesy predictable romantic bits. A lot about grief and loss as well so more substance than I was expecting. However, I could not get over one massive plot issue, which I will not spoil, and it was just so cheesy at points that I cringed. But, as far as the genre goes, this one was decent and served it’s purpose.
After the sudden death of her sister Vivi, Emily takes on the care of her nephew Felix. When things get tough she sends her boyfriend Rory packing to save him from the burden of all she is dealing with. Things get a little complicated when Felix tries to get them back together with a very devious plan. Such a lovely story with characters that came alive from the pages. I made the mistake of reading the last few pages in the dentist waiting room and struggled to hold the tears in.
I cried, I laughed, and I talked aloud to the characters. I’ll Miss You This Christmas is my first seasonal read for 2023 and it’s set the bar high for the others on my TBR.
I had to shout at Emily and Rory often throughout the book. They were frustrating and neither of them was admitting to what they wanted, which was ultimately each other. Felix was adorable, and I loved how he was communicating with his Mum. Such an awesome thing to do to keep her memory alive. Baxter was a sweetie but I have to admit, I was a little worried that he’d get squished somewhere on all those long train journeys!
Lucy Mitchell writes sensitively about some heart-crushing subjects and she does so with love and compassion.
If you want a book for Christmas, then I’d definitely recommend asking Santa for this or just buy it for yourself at any time of year. Hell, I read it in 30 degree heat in the garden in September!
Thank you to Bloodhound Books for the opportunity to read and review I’ll Miss You This Christmas by Lucy Mitchell.
For me this truly was the perfect book and I absolutely loved it! From the title to the cover and then the beautiful story within. Emily has guardianship of a nephew Felix after her sister passed away and she is struggling and trying hard to keep it altogether. Felix is determined to get his aunt Emily and her ex boyfriend Rory back together. This heartbreaking story had me bawling like a baby but it also made me smile and put me in the Christmas spirit.
Such a beautiful love story but also covers grief, loss, and friendship.
Felix (9) and his Aunty Emily must learn to live through the grief of losing Vivi, Emily’s sister and Felix mum. It follows the break up of Emily and Rory and their journey across the country in search of each other to try and fix their relationship all with the help of little Felix
I really enjoyed this and was such an uplifting Christmas romance 🥰
This book managed to make me cry after just a few pages. I felt Felix’ sadness about his mom’s passing overwhelm me.
At some points during the story I felt like it was dragging on, but that was mostly my own impatience talking! In fact, I finished this book in one sitting because of it.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It took me through a range of emotions, which is something I always appreciate when reading.
This is the first book I’d read by this author, and I absolutely loved it. It made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside, and I would definitely recommend reading it especially if you enjoy a cosy heartwarming story. Yes, the plot is predictable, and as it’s written in the first person we get to read how each of the characters feel.
I received this book free and am leaving this review voluntarily.
Guys - you know me! It's never too early for Christmas and I just couldn't wait to read this! Just look at that front cover and tell me it doesn't give you all the feels!? Even the cutie little sausa doggie! 🐾
When Emily's sister dies suddenly and she steps up to care for her young nephew, Felix - she knows that her partner Rory isn't yet ready to settle down and do the kid thing, so she ends their two year relationship. But was this really what they both wanted?
I love that in the movies and books, especially Christmas ones, the adults make such a hash at communicating what they really want and feel, yet the kids perceive everything! It was lovely that Felix missed Rory and had his own plan to reunite the pair in time for Christmas. Even with 200 miles separating them.
The characters were relatable and likable even if a little predictible. I liked the chapters being from the different pov voices and really loved Felix's narrative and humour.
The writing style was perfect for this genre. The suspense built and my emotions were all over the place, especially towards the end - I'm a sucker for the 'will they, won't they?' And will it be worth it or will they have moved on?
This is the perfect book to grab when the colder weather kicks in and it's time for the hot chocolates and blankets - It has everything you'd want from a Christmas romance. Was it cheesy? Course it was! But you've got to love that right?!
Well I don't usually read romance books but at it was to do with Christmas I have it a go and I thoroughly enjoyed every second of it,the characters were great, the story was excellent I couldn't put this book down as I needed to know what happened next,I will definitely recommend this book to friends and family.
I want to thank Netgalley and the author for gifting me the ebook. I was able to find the audio version through my local library. This was a very cute Christmas romcom. I have read a few books from this author and I have enjoyed all of them! If you are looking for a feel good Christmas novel you will like this one. All the characters are cute and I love the plot. Highly recommend.
There was a girl I once missed dearly on Xmas of 24 and I built my world around her AMB. It wasn’t until recently I realized how toxic she is. She’s a narcissist and perfectionist which is pretty much the worst people ever. Lied over and over again but accused me of being the liar. This Xmas I spent the entire time with somebody who loves me for me. Love you Amy
What a lovely Christmas themed book Lucy Mitchell has created. For me a Christmas book has to be set around Christmas it's self with frequent references to that season which this one does in buckets full. I really recommend this book to all that enjoy their Christmas reading.
Absolutely loved this festive romance! Such a lovely story filled with heartbreak, sadness & pure happiness. A modern fairytale to be enjoyed at any time of year! Highly recommend & looking forward to reading more by this author.
A really good Christmas novel. A predictable outcome but with a range of emotions to get there and from 3 different points of view. Great read cosying up under a blanket on the sofa with a hot chocolate and Christmas lights. I was given an ARC of this book and this is my honest opinion.
