Serendipity Kit

Rate this book
Christopher "Kit" Britten drifts through life, partying with friends and spending his parents’ money. He hasn’t told them he’s gay, but he’s told all of his five sisters, and to keep from being harassed about responsibility, he works part-time for one of them. When she sends him on an errand and his shiny red Ferrari breaks down in one of Houston's seediest locals, he pushes it to the nearest garage. That's where he meets Romy O'Keefe. Romy works hard as a mechanic to provide for his mother and little brother. When Kit pushes his to-die-for Ferrari into Romy’s garage, Romy is wary of falling for gorgeous Kit despite instant attraction. Kit impulsively decides to prove how serious he is about Romy by coming out to his parents―and his father disowns him! Uptown and downtown clash as the two men share the tiny space in Romy’s Airstream trailer and struggle to make ends meet. When Kit’s former boyfriend comes sniffing around, and Romy gets the bill for his little brother’s surgery, it drives home to him how very different his world is from Kit’s. However, Kit is in love with the velvet-voiced Romy, and he isn’t about to give up.

Connie Bailey is a Luddite who can’t live without her computer. She’s an acrophobic who loves to fly, a fault-finding pessimist who, nonetheless, is always surprised when something bad happens, and an antisocialite who loves her friends like family. She’s held a number of jobs in many disparate arenas to put food on the table, but writing is the occupation that feeds her soul.

Connie lives with her ultralight designer husband at a small grass-strip airfield halfway between Disney World and Busch Gardens. Logic and reality have had little to do with her life, and she likes it that way.

Overall I can say I really liked this story. It took me a while to get into it and there are some things that made it difficult to read but the story as such makes sense.

In the beginning of the story we get acquainted with Kit a high class social party player who as the blurb says works for his sister, living an active social life and spending his family’s money.

When his Ferrari breaks down, he meets Romy and the fireworks are there. There is an instant connection and from that part it goes pretty fast. The attraction is there, they fall heavy and fast so to speak (perhaps a little too fast ?) They get involved in a relationship that leads to Kit unexpectedly coming out to his parents. And from that point on the story gets more attractive and interesting.

I like how the author took the reader by the hand in showing Kit and Romy how to live together in a very small space and then going to a place of their own and trying to make that work.

The differences are there but they are able to make it work somehow although there are parts when I have to say it is a bit too easy. There are no real troubles or angst besides a ex-lover who has got it into his mind that he wants Kit back.

The best of this book is in the end when they face some real life problems that sets off a whole set of different emotions and expectations. When Romy lets go of his insecurities and breaks down, when his mum tells Kit somethings he should know and makes it easier to see things, while in the middle of that Cardo is in the hospital.

Kit needs to fight for his love and he will. Making clear for once and for all that he is there to stay and that he can take care of himself.

After that it seems the world is giving them a break and things get better in a kind and nice way not overwritten or unrealistic just in a casual simply written down way. That I really appreciated as a reader.

The Epilogue leaves the reader with a satisfied and pleased feeling. Author Connie Bailey has a very nice way of telling this story, the it flows well and makes for a very comfortable read.

Overall a good 4 stars for me, for someone who is looking for a nice story about opposites attract and not much real drama but some sexy hot romance and strong friendship, a very good choice for reading.

Personally I really enjoyed reading Serendipity Kit.

Both characters come across as very likeable, sweet and caring as well as quite outgoing and Kit especially, I felt is a little immature for his 23 years (not that it's a bad thing in my opinion ) and he seems to be taken as a snobby rich brat but really he's just adorably sweet. Kit's the kinda guy I love, especially reading about. Not everyone enjoy's a bratty character as much as I do and he's quite the kind I love - not too bratty and definitely not cold hearted like many rich kids. Oh and he is funny. There are a damn lot of conversations that just made me grin, a lot.

Romy is that cool and handsome mechanic who worked hard for what he's got. He's actually worked hard all his life to support his mother and little brother, which is always very admiring. Personally I really like that "meeting by chance - serendipity" theme a lot and with Kit literally driving into Romy's life, they both finally found what they were looking for. So I guess for me this is a very lovely concept and with those two being so perfect together it was easy to smile through page and page and page....

“It was the luckiest day of my life when those ants clogged up your fuel filter.”

“Hm, maybe this was their plan all along, the little matchmakers.”

“They gave their lives for our happiness.”

I have to be honest though, the book isn't flawless (but which is?) - There isn't anything happening except them being happy together =D Well, ok there are a few things coming up here and there and I don't know, while I enjoyed reading their story somehow I think something actually happening would have been good, on the other hand, I kinda enjoyed a break from up and down relationships with heartache and heartbreak all over...

...this is just a happy - make you feel goood - piece of work and the fact that I really did feel good and kept turning page after page with a smile makes it worth top rating.

So I guess the only really negative thing I wanna point out is that all in all I felt it takes quite a while to really understand the boys as I think the "story telling" isn't exactly the best I have come across so far.

It takes also a while to get accustomed to the flow, it's a bit irritating at times but I think at some point it just feels alright eventhough I come across little bits and pieces each chapter I thought I would have done differently, but since that is the case with every book I read you might as well just ignore I said it lol.

Serendipity means a “happy accident” or “pleasant surprise”; a fortunate mistake. Specifically, the accident of finding something good or useful while not specifically searching for it. (Source: Wikipedia)

As Kit go on an errand for his sister, his car simply stops near a garage. Romy, the mechanic falls in love with the Ferrari, but he’s struck as if by lightning with the owner of the car. Two men that couldn’t be more different from each other; one a wealthy brat going through life being supported by his rich parents, the other barely making ends meet and supporting his mother and teenage brother. What they have in common though is their heart. Makes you wonder if that is enough to make a life together...

The banter between Kit&Romy was beyond remarkable and adorable!!! Love stories where the MCs are great best friends above everything else. Also enjoyed the way they supported each other even when they couldn't figure out right away the other. I expected their differences would work against them but it was the opposite!

Connie Bailey does it again. Top notch characters that I just loved as they wrestled with life that isn't always fair. First rate.

Kit Britten is the proverbial rich kid. He lives off mommy and daddy’s dime, in an apartment owned by their corporation, driving the car they gave him for his birthday and having his groceries delivered by the local supermarket. He fears if he ever told them the truth about his sexuality that they would not only cut him off, but cut them out of their lives. Everything changes when he meets Romy.

Romy O’Keefe is a mechanic that owns his own small shop, lives in a trailer out back and still supports his mom and little brother. His life and liveliehood are at the opposite end of the spectrum from Kit’s. There is something about the surprisingly unspoiled rich kid that quickly gets under Romy’s skin, and soon the two are dating. When dinner at the Britten manner reveals the truth about Kit and Romy’s relationship, Kit’s worse fears are realized as he and Romy go from boyfriends to roommates overnight.

It’s not all sunshine and roses though. Kit has to let go of a lifestyle he has become accustomed to and Romy has to give up a little bit of his independence when Kit moves in. Loving each other is never an issue, but trust and communication doesn’t come quite as easy for two guys that are using to living on their own.

This was just a fast, fun read about the joys of young love. Both men have secrets and they’ve come from vastly different backgrounds, so you spend a good deal of the story trying to figure out if their love for each other will be enough to make them fight for the rest. The writing was youthful and fresh and I thoroughly enjoyed to storyline and the character development. I haven’t listened to a reading by Peter Brooke before and for the most part he did a great job. In the beginning, the changes in tone, inflection and nuances were too subtle. But as the story progressed Brooke really found his footing and I especially loved the rough around the edges tone he chose to use for Romy.

A great listen for anyone that likes stories for hopeless romantics that are well written and well conveyed.

Review both book and audio:
This is a fun, light-hearted book, with very low angst. There is a very slow burn from interest to love. Kit and Romy meet in a garage when Kit’s Ferrari breaks down in front of Romy’s garage, located in the bad part of town. From that moment on, there is only a touch of sexual tension as both are pretty much immediately, and openly attracted to one another. The biggest source of tension actually comes from whether or not Kit will come out to his father to be with Romy. Once that happens, they are forced to go from dating to living with one another and some tensions arise between them, especially in regards to money. But they smooth those out easily, in fact, Ash (Kit’s friend) comments on the ease of their relationship, and Kit tells him “We talk things out”. And they do. Thus, not much tension.
I was very glad I had listened to this rather than reading it, because Peter B Brooke did a great job with the voices, giving Romy a nice, low, and rumbly voice and Kit a light, but not too swishy voice. He also gave Kit’s friend Ash this funny “aristocratic/nasally” voice that was funny to listen to. Since it is set in Texas there were some secondary characters with accents and that was nice. He even sang a bit, which was sweet. Romy’s boss had a fun Brooklyn type accent as well.
The recording had some technical errors and there were times when my ears got blown out when the sound changed suddenly, but there weren’t that many of them. It was distracting though.
As an overall experience, I enjoyed listening to it, the story was easy, low tension, held some funny banter between Romy and Kit. If I had been reading it I may have been a little bored, skimming to see what happens because I was not captured by much tension, but as a listening experience it was very enjoyable.
Overall Impression:

4 stars – I really liked it

I'm almost hesitant to rate this 3 stars because I really thought Kit's characters was inconsistant and Romy's wasn't very interesting. But I did manage to read this straight through so I did find some enjoyment out of the book. I felt like the author wasn't to sure about what he wanted Kit to be. The opening when he meets Romy has him almost flamboyantly gay yet then turns around and has him hiding in the closet. There are times when it feels like Kit is suppose to be naive and innocent but then says he has a revolving door of boyfriends. Yet he was brokenhearted and in in the dating game because of his ex. I don't know but I just felt like the author wanted to fit one too many archetypes into Kit's character.

Audiobook Review:

I honestly only bought this audiobook because of the narrator. Mr. Brooke is one of my favorites and really does a fantastic job with this read. This was a really sweet, feel good read. There is not real drama and a little angst, but overall very enjoyable. Kit is from a rich family and Romy is a mechanic with a wonderful heart and an insecurity complex. A chance meeting leads to a lovely romance.

Enjoyed the book but felt it had the potential to be so much better - the connection between to MCs wasn't as strong as I hoped.

Overall it wasn't my favorite book by Bailey, and I usually adore her work. The dialogue and characters was a little 2D and I just never clicked. Some amusing parts.
