Ambition has always been his biggest downfall…until he meets her.
World champion bulldogger Sutton Grant works hard on the road, but his quiet charm has earned the nickname “The Saint” because he’s never been the love ‘em and leave ‘em type with the ladies. When he’s sidelined by an injury, he needs help keeping his horse in competition shape, but he fears trying to sweet-talk premier horse trainer London Gradsky is a losing proposition–because the woman sorta despises him.
London is humiliated when her boyfriend dumps her for a rodeo queen. What makes the situation worse? She’s forced to see the lovebirds on the rodeo circuit every weekend. In an attempt to save face, London agrees to assist the notoriously mild, but ruggedly handsome Sutton Grant with his horse training problem on one condition: Sutton has to pretend to be her new boyfriend.
But make believe doesn’t last long between the sassy cowgirl and the laid-back bulldogger. When the attraction between them ignites, London learns that sexy Sutton is no Saint when that bedroom door closes; he’s the red-hot lover she’s always dreamed of.
The more time they spend together, the more Sutton realizes he wouldn’t mind being roped and tied to the rough and tumble cowgirl for real…
Absolutely loved Sutton and Londin's story! Whenever I am in the mood for some hot cowboys and sassy heroines, Lorelei James always delivers! It's crazy how she is able to make you feel everything in such a short story, can't wait for more!
Roped In is part of the 1001 Dark Nights series… a collection of novellas that are breathtakingly sexy and magically romantic. Some are paranormal, some are erotic. Each and every one is compelling and page turning.
Inspired by the exotic tales of The Arabian Nights, 1001 Dark Nights features 12 New York Times and USA Today bestselling authors.
In the original, Scheherazade desperately attempts to entertain her husband, the King of Persia, with nightly stories so that he will postpone her execution.
In this version, month after month, each of our fabulous authors puts a unique spin on the premise and creates a tale that a new Scheherazade tells long into the dark, dark night.
Personally, I’ve actually not read very many of Lorelei James’ novels although I know of her by reputation as a prolific erotic romance author and neither have I read any of the Black Top Cowboys series so I can assure you all that this one will work perfectly well as a standalone.
Sutton Grant has a badly behaved horse that needs to be trained while he recuperates from an accident and the one person above all others he wants is the girl who very reluctantly and angrily sold him the horse in the first place – London Gradsky. He thinks she is going to be very fiery and resistant to his proposal but she’s recently been rather publicly dumped by text message and her ex is parading around the rodeo circuit with his new trophy girlfriend in tow and London grabs the chance to get Sutton to pose as her boyfriend in an attempt to get back at him. A woman scorned and all that!
What starts as a business agreement for the both of them soon develops into a super-hot attraction and they struggle to resist each other for real. Both of them are a little disillusioned by their lives as they currently are and definitely see something in the other that offers something different and refreshingly honest.
Lorelei James does a fantastic job of bringing to life the rodeo circuit, a world completely alien to me as a British reviewer and deftly combines the super-hot erotic sex scenes with actually a really very tender love story.
I so wanted to enjoy this much more than I did! :( I have loved Sutton from the very first time we met him but wasn't overly keen on London...She came across as so immature and I just didn't feel the connection between them.
Roped In was hot. Again, had no idea I would like a western like this. In it, you will meet London and Sutton. Of course, this whole "relationship" started off with a favor. However, since I'm not new to this whole situation, it was pretty easy to see where things were going to head. Yes, they had obvious chemistry that didn't come to light until they started hanging out with one another. Then things got spicier and hotter between them - which I approved of everything instantly.
In the end, they got their little HEA. It was adorable and kept me intrigued from start to finish. Will definitely look into the rest of the series next year.
Sutton and London relationship may have started out as a favor to the other, but their unexpectedly spicy chemistry took over and phew!! I liked London’s rough edges and sassy humor. I also enjoyed Sutton’s silent efforts to help London, all while trying to keep his libido in check, when he wrongly assumed London wanted to keep their relationship on ‘friends’ status. Hilarious and steamy...Oy this was such a fun read!
This is one of those times when I wish I had more freakin’ stars to give a book because seriously people I am so pumped up about Roped In. I’ve enjoyed the Blacktop Series from the start but there is something truly special about Sutton Grant and London Gradsky a couple that gives Bran and Harper Turner a run for top couple in my book. Although their relationship started out of necessity; it soon turned in to much more and damn can author Lorelei James heat up a room with just a few words and a well placed ass slap. While Roped In is a novella it reads like a novel and that my friends is the sign of a truly talented author. When bulldogger Sutton Grant has a second life threatening accident he makes a promise to God that if he recovers he’ll never bulldog again and so even though he’s been cleared to go back to his normal routine he hasn’t told his family, his sponsors, or his PR people. Sutton has no intentions of going back to work but until he figures out his life he’s keeping quiet however, his horse Dial needs someone who can work with him and the only other person besides Sutton the horse will obey is London Gradsky, the woman who trained him initially and the woman who hates his guts. Man oh man I so love a story where there is animosity between the hero and heroine right off the bat and London does not like Sutton, not one little bit but there is no denying that that she thinks he’s hot or the fact that he’ll work nicely into her plans to make her ex and his new pretty, pretty princess see that she’s moved on to much better things. Thing is one kiss and they both pretty much realize the heat between them is real and getting to know one another isn’t going to be a hardship. Sutton is one of those good guy heroes that hides a very wicked side, London is sassy and speaks her mind and together they are explosive. I loved how easily these two fell into a routine and into playing house together. Their wicked, hot, insanely sexy moments were passionate and intense. As they both have a little bit of relationship baggage they weren’t very good at sharing their feelings or coming clean about changes in their lives which of course led to them working up to a good mad. Thankfully they had friends and family to help them see the path they needed to take to make things work. Two of my favorite scenes were Sutton meeting up with Tanna and eventually Fletch and London with her Mom; you just have to love straight talking women. I really can’t say enough great things about this story other than I read it cover to cover because I simply refused to put it down for anything, yes it is that good! Roped In is everything you’ve come to expect from a Lorelei James book; a sexy hero with a heart of gold, a spitfire heroine, a well developed plot with a side of supreme sexiness and a need to go back and re-read the whole series all over again!
I Picked Up This Book Because: Needed a short book for #24B4Monday Readathon
The Characters:
Sutton Grant: World champion bulldogger sidelined by injury London Gradsky: Top notch horse trainer
The Story:
Sutton Grant has decided to retire after an accident that almost left him paralized. The problem is he hasn’t told anyone else yet. He recruits London to get his horse back into shape to be sold. London request Sutton to pretend to be her beau so she can make her ex jealous. They discover they have real chemistry, no pretending needed.
Sutton and London askew a good couple. I enjoyed listening to their story. The amount of cursing in this book surprised/bothered me. Not sure why guess I’m getting old.
World champion steer wrestler Sutton Grant was severely injured for the second time. He made a pack with God if he survived, he wouldn't go back, and now he’s trying to figure out what to do with his life and how to tell his ranching family about his decision.
London Gradsky was dumped by her wrangler boyfriend for a Texas beauty queen. Even though he didn't rock her world, she's mad and hurt. When Sutton, the man who bought her temperamental horse, Dial, from her parents, shows up and asks for her help training him, London agrees, only if he’ll pretend to be her boyfriend for the summer circuit.
Roped In is a fun, sexy novella, which can be read standalone from Ms. James’ Blacktop Cowboys series. Sutton and London share an immediate attraction. They are both are very forward and blunt, speaking openly and honestly about their desires, which makes for a fast-paced story and hot and heavy sex. It's refreshing although, sometimes the frank discussions felt almost too much. There were only a few misunderstandings between the pair, but nothing that made my eyes roll. Overall, Roped In was an enjoyable love story.
It shouldn't come as a surprise to me or any of you, but Lorelei James has done it again! Here's another couple I have fallen hard and fast for.
You could say this is an enemies to lovers story, which is a trope I love. Sutton "The Saint" had bought his horse from London's family. A fact she wasn't all too pleased about back then. They had some words and weren't each others favorite person. After Sutton has a major accident and swear he won't go back to competing, he needs some help with his horse to get it trained again and maybe find a new home. So who best than London to do it.
London on her part has her own issues. Her ex boyfriend dumped her for the rodeo queen and she's been having to see them showing off their romance around the rodeo circuit, which she's traveling to have her training practice. When Sutton comes looking for her, she seizes the opportunity to exchange favors. He can pretend to be her boyfriend so that she doesn't look pathetic in front of others and she will help with his horse. Things quickly get more serious than that!
I love a good, shy hero. And "The Saint" is that at its best. He's all contained emotion waiting to bubble up! He's a gentleman when he needs to be, adorable and caring. You will find yourself quickly in London's shoes and falling for him.
Although I wanted a bit more sexy, this story had everything I wanted. I got caught up in their story and could've read about them longer than this was. Another great installment in this series that just leaves me craving more! Write faster!! Because I'm greedy like that.

"Seeing that fierceness? For her? Immediate lady boner."
Roped In was a quick read featuring a fake dating romance between an injured cowboy and the woman he hires to train his horse.
Sutton Grant has worked hard to become one of the best bulldoggers in the world only to be sidelined by an injury. Unable to keep up with his horse's training, Sutton decides to hire premier horse trainer London Gradsky. Unfortunately the woman despises him because he bought his horse out from under her. To his surprise, London agrees to help him on one condition. London needs Sutton to pretend to be her new boyfriend to put a stop to the gossip that she's pining for her ex-boyfriend that dumped her for a rodeo queen. It doesn't take long for their fake romance to start to feel all too real. When the attraction that has been building between them comes to a head, Sutton and London will have to decide how far they're willing to take their charade.
Fake dating romances are some of my favorites and I knew I would enjoy this one when Sutton and London had instant chemistry in their first meeting. They both are immediately attracted to one another and their first "pretend" kiss was very steamy. I liked that the pair talked about the fact they were surprised by how intense their attraction for each other was. It took a bit longer than I was expecting for them to give in to their feelings but that primarily had to do with a miscommunication. Once they do though, the scenes are super steamy and I really enjoyed those. My main complaint about the pair's romance is that Sutton has a tendency to hold back and keeps things from London. I don't love communication issues in my romances and this one has quite a bit of them. Other than that though, I did enjoy the romance.
Overall Roped In was an enjoyable read and I'm definitely interested in checking out the rest of the series in the future.
Ms. James consistently brings the power and the passion in her stories. No one can write contemporary erotic western romances like her. Her alpha cowboys always get me riled up and needing a cold shower. The chemistry is ALWAYS there, the steam factor is ALWAYS off the charts, and the emotional pull from each character ALWAYS drags me in and never lets go. Sutton Grant is yet another sexy as sin, delicious cowboy who has been in a rut ever since his injury a while back. London Gradsky is a kick ass cowgirl who has been scorned, and she can't quite let go. Sutton has something London needs and London has something Sutton needs. Sutton needs a trainer for his stubborn horse, and London needs a man by her side to save face. A deal is struck, but no one is thinking of the consequences. When there is no more training to be done, and no more jealousy to be had, where does that leave the two? Do they go their separate ways, or do they cave in to their true feelings for one another?
Roped In is just another example of how Ms. James can capture a reader's heart with just a few chapters. Short, sweet, and hella steamy, Sutton and London's love story will have you blushing and laughing the whole way through.
*Gifted copy provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review*
3.5* Sutton and London have a brief history; her parents are horse breeders and Sutton bought his horse (Dial) from them. London trains horses. She was against her parents selling Dial. Fast forward a couple of years (I think). Sutton is coming off a severe injury and rethinking his rodeo career. He hasn't been able to spend time with Dial due to his recovery. As a result Dial is temperamental and misbehaving. He is able to recruit London to help train him and in return, he will be her fake boyfriend. (She's fresh out of a breakup). Nicely paced, I could see them together. For the most part, they did a good job communicating (at least eventually). I haven't read anything else in this series, but felt it stood well on its own.
3.5 stars. An okay novella by Lorelei James who writes erotic cowboy stories. Our hero is a world champion steer wrestler recovering from major injuries and our heroine is the lady that trained his horse and now he needs her to work with the horse while he can't ride. Unfortunately, she doesn't like the cowboy much because she thinks he bought the horse under false premises.
Well, our cowboy doesn't just use his rope on steers and eventually our lovely horse lady sees the light. But this book just didn't live up to other Lorelei James' books I've read. Maybe it was too short, but it as just okay for me.
I found myself laughing so much while reading, but probably not for the reason the author wanted. I thought Sutton and London were perfect for each other right away. It seemed like their verbal sparing was foreplay right from the start. I loved how they got to know each other first, but also how each one had a different definition of what was going on. Things got so much better once they started to actually communicate.
Lorelei James has done it again with her Blacktop Cowboy series. I liked this story because it wasn't all about the rodeo, but about figuring out what you want after the thrill of rodeoing is gone. This is Sutton and London's story. There is dislike, friendship, and possibly love between these two people.
So sad that I didn't like this like I thought I would. The heroine came off as such a brat, know-it-all user. The hero - I couldn't even remember him from all the previous Blacktop books I've read. Should I be wary of the 2nd 1001 Nights novella Ms. James wrote under this series? I think I should. *Sigh* Where have all the good books gone?
loved this story!! i loved this novella, its a awesome story from beginning to end, i love lorelei james books their aways page turners. if you like your romances hot, with alittle bit of kink and awesome deep characters you'll love her black top cowboy tales!!! 5 star must read!!!
This is another of the 1001 dark nights series, which I read because I need something mindless and entertaining before bed. Standards are low and this one failed to meet them.
It starts out harmless enough. This is a rodeo romance with a down-on-his-luck rodeo rider and a loud-mouthed but loveable horse trainer. The writing is simple, straightforward and Kitch. There is a lot of sexual banter, a basic plot line and a fair amount of humor. So far so good. Not my cup of tea, but worthy of the getting-to-sleep, bodice-ripper genre.
Then I was betrayed. If you are sensitive to the combination of violence and sex, stop reading on page 83. I am not sensitive, but I am incensed when authors portray this kind of behavior as completely acceptable. Sex should not involve any activity that leaves you with bruises, bites, or bleeding. If you plan for such activity there should be 1) a discussion, and 2) a consent. Neither were present in this case. If they are not present, the hero is guilty of assault and battery. Our hero, up to this point known laughably as "the saint," decides that is pefectly OK to, after oral sex, bite his partner on the inside of her thigh (twice) hard enough to leave substantial bruises. He also hits her hard enough to leave red areas still present several hours after sex. The authors calls these "spanks" just so we don't get offended early on in the sex scene, and there are no bruises where he hits her, again to make sure we can be squishy in our interpretations of events.
Tellingly, however, in the beginning of the next chapter, the so-called hero is surveying the damage: "She'd twisted the sheeets into a knot, exposing her bare leg allowing him to see the "love bruises" he had "sucked" (really, bitten) on the inside of her thighs. Damn if those red and purple "marks" (bruises) did look sexy against her pale skin."
What kind of mysogenistic asshole gets off on beating his sex parttner, then admiring the bruises? "He'd never been fully able to explore his "kink" with any woman, besides a few slaps on the ass here and there and some limited rope play, one hand tied to the bed sort of thing"...
Are you kidding me? We have another name for this kind of "kink". It's called assault. Don't let anyone tell you any differently. I'm not that familiar with rodeo antics and maybe it's common to tie your partner up and beat them, but none of us have to play that game. A book that does not have a disclaimer on the back about sexual violence should be condemned and ignored.
I'm not into this genre of drivel. I didn't finish the book and shall not be reading any more of Lorelei James. There is just too much good fiction out there to pretend that this comes anywhere close (so to speak).

Book 6.5 in Blacktop Cowboys by Lorelei James. Sutton Grant is the gentleman Bulldogger that got given the nickname The Saint because he was a perfect gentleman and didn’t make his way through the rodeo buckle bunnies. After he’s injured he struggles to decide what to do with his life but know he needs help with his demon horse that is a champion but very badly behaved when not focused on the job. London is a horse trainer and trained Sutton’s horse. So when Sutton turns up at a horse show asking for help London offers a deal. Pretend to be her boyfriend so people don’t pitty her after been dumped by txt and for tiara wearing rodeo queen. I absolutely loved that London is a strong but a little mouthy character that says what she thinks but I adore that Sutton loves that too. Can not find a better cowboy author in my eyes absolutely love LJ and if you want to try read Rough Riders first then Blacktop
I forget the mood of LJ's western romance/smut: cowboys that wear dust and sweat that lingers with their sexy scent and aura; horses, barns, and corrals; rodeos, trucks, and trailers; midwestern sunsets, sprawling land, and wrap-around porches.
And the kicker... Rauchy hot sex, two willful souls getting together, and straight talk.
This novella brought me back to why I like this author, a like that began with the Blacktop Cowboys series.
After a life-threatening injury, bulldogger Sutton Grant knows that his career is over, but his horse, Dial, is another matter. The only one who can help the stubborn gelding is premier horse trainer, London Gradsky. Unfortunately, Sutton and London have a problematic past, but she is willing to put aside their conflict if he does her a little favor - pretend to her ex-boyfriend that she and Sutton are now a couple.
Series note: This novella is part of the 1001 Nights project and can be read as a standalone within the Blacktop Cowboys series.
Sutton and London's "pretend relationship" agreement has potential, but London's reasons for wanting it are childish and even idiotic. Sutton, on the other hand, is a charming hero, and his obvious respect for women in general, and London in particular is a huge turn-on. They have a strong emotional and physical connection despite some questionable dialogue - "lurve", really?
The horse training elements could have been more developed, but this is a novella and there is only so much page space.
Overall, a light and entertaining read despite the somewhat immature heroine and silly dialogue.
#6.5 in the Blacktop Cowboys western romance series
We finally learn Sutton's story--the sensitive rodeo hero who had feelings for Tanna in one of the previous books. I liked his warm softness at that time, but it turns out he's a lot more dominant and kinkier than I had thought. I'm not sure I like this new vision of him as much, but he's definitely a strong MC and is a good match for London. He asks her to work with his horse (while Sutton is recovering from his most recent injury), and, in return, London asks him to help make her ex jealous. They both get what they want, but they also realize that their feelings go a lot deeper than either of them expected. There are some hot and heavy scenes, and there are the usual blips in the relationship because of non-communication and misunderstandings. But it all flowed together nicely, and I liked both characters.
3 1/2 This was good and I bumped it up for the erotic element for those that like a little hotness. I forgot how quickly and much sex is a part of the story even though she puts in the wants of the characters too. We get a new career choice for our male that fits just right but he keeps it from everyone for the longest time and I didn't understand that. Unless he was questioning his decision which didn't seem like it. Or maybe he was flighty in his youth and he didn't want to get people's hopes up. But he didn't sound like that man and he is grown now so doesn't make as much sense. Still it was really good.
Short and hot. These two really burned up the sheets. I can only imagine how London felt when she saw Sutton's indoor gun range. LOL, in today's world I'm sure she thought up all sorts of scenarios! I think my favorite part was London's conversation with her mother. LOL, it was hilarious!!
I also loved that this wasn't necessarily a HEA but a HFN and considering how short this book was I think it was totally perfect.
