ROSE IMPEY was born, and grew up, in Northwich, Cheshire. When she first left school she worked in a bank, but soon realised that this was not for her; so she decided to go back to school and then went on to college, where she trained to be a teacher. She later taught in a Junior school in Leicester.
Rose has two grown-up daughters. While her children were small, Rose developed her interest in children's books through reviewing, bookselling, storytelling and giving talks to parents and teachers.
The Impey family have a dog called Holly, which has also become a star. In 1988 Rose was short-listed for the Smarties Children's Book Prize for 'Desperate for a Dog'. Most of her stories are based on her own experiences either as a teacher or a parent. As a family they like jokes, and this often provides Rose with the ideas for her books.
She spends a lot of time visiting schools to read her work. Her books are widely published worldwide, including the United States, Australia, France, Denmark, Germany and Spain. Rose enjoys eating, talking, swimming and reading, although not necessarily in that order!
'The Sleepover Club' series is what made me love reading. I got given a few when I was about 8 or 9 years old and very quickly got hooked, reading the whole series. This meant that I was hooked on reading in general and began widening my horizon in terms of author/genre etc, and I haven't stopped since! Therefore, for me, the series educated me to an invaluable level and was the origin of my thirst for reading, writing and learning. The content is completely appropriate, fun and relatable for young girls of about 8 - 12 years old, and the characters lovable. Each book takes a different theme, so I had my favourites that I re-read countless times. I think its fun that each book follows the same aesthetic design, making them fun to collect as a set and in doing so, encouraging further reading through collecting more books. They also feel rather 'grown-up' to read, meaning that pre-teen girls just love them. Lexis and syntax are easy enough for a 9 year old to read alone, yet simultaneously challenging enough to develop reading skills. Perfect books for pre-teen girls to encourage further reading.
An ok read. The story is about the sleepover club having a sleepover at Kenny's(her real name is Laura and I have no idea why she prefers Kenny... Though I'm having thoughts that she might actually be a dyke not wanting to wear dresses and all). It's Christmas and Frankie and Kenny wants to earn money by washing cars. Seems like a nice theme, but it all goes into a tangent and the story transcends to about Molly, Kenny's sister. I couldn't help but feel that doing pranks on your sister was something to fuss about and was a rather exciting thing to do, even though the pranks never worked and they got told off. I wish I could have seen Molly's point of view as the book just made her look unreasonable and mean. Also, it would have been nice if the book promoted a healthy sisterhood relationship, not by buying each other stuffs, but through conversation and understanding one another. All and all... It's an ok read.
