Murray was Born in Cape Town, South Africa, Murray became a noted missionary leader. His father was a Scottish Presbyterian serving the Dutch Reformed Church of South Africa, and his mother had connections with both French Huguenots and German Lutherans. This background to some extent explains his ecumenical spirit. He was educated at Aberdeen University, Scotland, and at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. After ordination in 1848 he served pastorates at Bloemfontein, Worcester, Cape Town, and Wellington. He helped to found what are now the University College of the Orange Free State and the Stellenbosch Seminary. He served as Moderator of the Cape Synod of the Dutch Reformed Church and was president of both the YMCA (1865) and the South Africa General Mission (1888-1917), now the Africa Evangelical Fellowship.

He was one of the chief promoters of the call to missions in South Africa. This led to the Dutch Reformed Church missions to blacks in the Transvaal and Malawi. Apart from his evangelistic tours in South Africa, he spoke at the Keswick and Northfield Conventions in 1895, making a great impression. upon his British and American audiences. For his contribution to world missions he was given an honorary doctorate by the universities of Aberdeen (1898) and Cape of Good Hope(1907).

Murray is best known today for his devotional writings, which place great emphasis on the need for a rich, personal devotional life. Many of his 240 publications explain in how he saw this devotion and its outworking in the life of the Christian. Several of his books have become devotional classics. Among these are Abide in Christ, Absolute Surrender, With Christ in the School of Prayer, The Spirit of Christ and Waiting on God.

Brief 1-2 paragraph excerpts from various works by Andrew Murray. Each comes with a short Scripture, and meditation by Murray.

I normally don't go for 'devotionals' as I find them consistently shallow and sentimental. This one, however, I can highly recommend. Each is brief and accessible reading, but at the same time there is real content, depth, and 'meat' to each one. As I've read one per day, Murray has become something of an indirect spiritual mentor and his words are worthy companions to explore the life of prayer.

INSPIRING

This is an excellent book about how we should operate in a more fruitful prayer life, teaching the believers the power of intercession… It’s a collection of daily devotions that are not set to any schedule, but I simply read through them until I found one that inspired a time of meditation about my relationship with Christ. Great book for prayer. RECOMMENDED.

I loved this collection. The excerpts included are brief enough to be a quick and easy devotional, but substantial enough that you can spend a lot of time studying. A great intro to Murray.

Andrew Murray's writing is amazing!! His insights into prayer has changed the way I approach my morning Bible reading. He encouraged and convicted me in equal turns. I did not finish this book, because I felt the devotional was too long. I was ready to start reading something else and decided the start of Lent was a good time to lay this one aside. The length is an editing problem, not an author problem since this is a compilation of Murray's writings.

This is a magnificent collection of readings from one of the foremost authorities on prayer. Taken from a number of Andrew Murray's other works, Power in Prayer provides a short reading for each chapter, suitable for a daily devotion. There are 150-plus readings in the book, making it roughly a half-year's worth, if read every day.

I found this little book to be quite valuable in my daily search for more of what the title promises. It also inspired me to desire to read the full books that these readings were taken from. I have read one or two others of Murray's works, and they are quite powerful, indeed. He was truly a man who understood prayer.

This would be an excellent volume for anyone not familiar with his works, and gives a great sample of what other books bring to our lives.

A very informative book. It is always nice to read about new inspirational books to help you strengthen your relationship with God. The author did a wonderful job.Very good information backed up with biblical scripture. I really liked that. I learned some things that I didn't know before. But as with all things, make sure you verify everything said here with the Bible for yourself.

Excerpts from other books by Andrew Murray on the place and practice of prayer in the life of a Christian. Most were excellent; a few leaned toward the "prosperity gospel".

This book was a great devotional but I wouldn't say it was groundbreaking. It was better used as a daily devotional and kept good reminders regarding prayer.

This is a collection of devotionals drawn from the writings of Andrew Murray. Each piece begins with a Scripture and includes an excerpt from one of Murray's books, the title of which is included at the end of each devotional. He emphasizes the importance of intercessory prayer and the necessity of the intercessor to take on the burden of praying for specific people and needs until the prayer is answered. Often we pray once or a few times for someone and think we've fulfilled our obligation or commitment to pray for them, but the author encourages us to go much further.
