Two resilient women separated by over 150 years are linked forever by their challenges, values, and determination.
Amber Prichard is thriving in her role as pastor’s wife, mom, and indispensable church volunteer—until chronic illness threatens to upend everything. Now unable to prove her value, she is forced to reevaluate how she defines herself. Inspired by an ancestor’s faded journal and heirlooms, she must work with her arch-nemesis if she wants to accomplish what is now impossible on her own.
Faced with the turmoil of the civil war, Willow Forrester didn’t intend to illegally enlist in the Union army as a secret female soldier. She only wanted to escape her father’s tyranny and follow her brother into the throes of adventure. When she comes face to face with the leader of a guerilla army, her health and insecurities threaten to shatter her heroism and render her powerless.
As their opposition threatens to overtake them, these two women must find their strength and identity to defeat impossible odds.

Oh my goodness, I AM Amber. How many times have I forced myself out of bed, only to sit in my chair all day long because I HAD to get up for the kids, but couldn't even keep my eyes open? How many times have I had to rest after taking a shower? Not even with the energy to get dressed yet (sorry for that visual)? I mean, I'm not a preacher's wife, but I AM a preacher's kid, so I know all the "right" things to say and be. And when you feel like life's falling apart because your body has betrayed you, you DO wonder what you're being punished for. Goodness knows, that's where my thoughts have been far too many times. And then you feel like maybe it IS all in your head, and you drive yourself CRAZY, wondering what on EARTH is wrong with you!!! You feel like you're wasting this time you have with your children because you're too lazy to get up. And do you know how many times I've wanted to ride in those electric carts at the grocery store, but don't because I don't want people staring at me, judging me, because I don't look sick?
Ok, I'm getting off my soapbox. I obviously have issues I need to work through. Suffice it to say that this book is personal for me. I didn't relate much to the 1800s character, but I certainly did to both Amber and Lily.

Fall Back and Find Me is a raw and engrossing tale of three women in separate circumstances trying to make their way when life feels unfair and out of control. With a lively cast of supporting characters and storytelling that sings, Hanks applies gospel truth to the kinds of fears and trials that are as difficult to untangle as they are relatable. Hanks continues to be an author that I strongly applaud and highly recommend.
Fall Back and Find Me by Author Sarah Hanks was a very well-written story that had solid Biblical truths portrayed throughout, while still being engaging and exciting.
It is Split-Timeline, Amber's story being set in the present and Willow's story being set during the Civil War.
There were many relatable characteristics to each of the women as well as one of the main side characters young Lily.
Author Sarah Hanks told each woman’s individual journey and story in such a thought provoking way.
We get to see Amber's historical connection to Willow and also how God uses young Lily to help Amber on her journey of healing.
The stories mesh together so wonderfully and are a beautiful reminder that when we let go of things that God needs us to let go of, He gives us true contentment, and healing. He fills us with His joy and peace that passes understanding.

I really connected with this book as someone who has POTS syndrome and other chronic health issues. I really felt a lot of what these characters were going through in particular the preacher's wife. This book was very well written. Thank you Sarah for your words.
This dual time novel takes the time of Civil War and current day and shows how God can help each one to overcome the thing that would have brought them down. I enjoyed the stories, partly based on truth, and how the author brought the two stories together, with Love, laughter, life, struggles, and faith.
Fall Back and Find Me is a wonderful book that weaves together two separate time periods: modern day and the Civil War era.
The modern-day protagonist is Amber Prichard, a pastor's wife who is diagnosed with a chronic illness, POTS. Amber has to come to terms with the physical limitations of her condition and it definitely alters her daily activities and puts a strain on her family. She is used to finding her identity in the various roles she plays as a wife, mother and church volunteer. When she has to stop "doing" and start "resting", she learns her true identity as a child of God. His love remains steadfast throughout her struggles to accept this new reality of chronic illness. The author's own personal experience with POTS lead to a rich portrayal of Amber.
The Civil War story centers around the character, Willow. She secretly follows her brother and signs up as a soldier in the war to try and earn the acceptance and praise of her earthly father. I didn't realize the pivotal role that Missouri played in the Civil War, with people fighting on both sides of the cause. After reading the book, I did some of my own research to learn more about the Civil War era in Missouri.
I really liked how Sarah Hanks intertwined these two characters' stories with a powerful message about God's love. His love carries us through life's challenges, regardless of our time in history!
Such a amazing story. Having being diagnosed with POTS myself in October of 2022 I related to this book so much and felt seen. The characters in this were so well written I could just imagine all the characters. Also reminded me in my faith to lean into God as is my ultimate Father and will always be there to catch me when I fall.
There's a nice connection between the two threads that isn't immediately obvious. I loved all the history about Missouri during the Civil War. What a difficult time!
In the modern day chapters, pastor wife Amber is struggling with a new medical diagnosis and how to create a new way of living for herself and her family.
Fall Back and Find Me is a compelling, well-executed dual timeline read. Set in Missouri, the story splits its time between Modern Day and the 1860s. While each timeline follows its own journey, they complement and enrich each other keeping the reader immersed in the touching, inspiring story. This fictional narrative, with reflections of the author’s own battle with chronic illness, educates as well as entertains. There are both smiling moments and crying ones. Wonderfully complex, strong lead characters in both timelines drive the story with their physical, emotional, and spiritual struggles along with their personal growth. I greatly appreciate the beautiful faith thread woven into the story. I enjoyed this book and highly recommend it. I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher with no obligation to write a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I love this book! The story of what these women went through and how God worked in them and on their behalf is inspiring. I highly recommend it. It is one of my favorites that I know I'll read again and again. #fallbackandfindme #ChristianFiction #upcomingrelease

A few of my favorite gleaned Sarah Hanks treasures (You're welcome):
“My Father has quite a high opinion of me. It seems He doesn’t create worthless things. ‘Radiant. Stunning. Wondrous. Captivating. Humorous, Faithful.’
“These are all words He has clothed me with. I wear them now like beautiful adornments...I walk forward covered in His words."
“My past defensiveness glares at me now, so obvious. How I’ve tried to prop myself up… How futile. When I’m with Him, I have nothing to prove.”
“Something in them caused them to believe the worst about me. Not something in me. They must have a hurt that Jesus needs to heal. And He will..."
From the very first chapter, I was cheering for Amber to find her worth and identity in Christ, not in her service. Her journey was heartbreaking at times, but so revealing of the many ways I often look to my family or accomplishments for meaning.
As a former Missourian, I was intrigued by the look at the Civil War in that state through the eyes of Willow. Willow too struggles to find meaning and identity, feeling unseen and unloved by her father.
As these women’s stories intertwine and the stakes for each of them rise, readers will be taken on an emotional journey with a beautiful and impactful faith arc.
Excellent! Willow is a young woman in 1860 who sets out to prove her father is wrong about her uselessness. Amber is her descendant, a present-day pastor's wife, who pressures herself to be perfect. Both have lessons to learn about God's love when they are hit with fainting sickness/postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome.
Awesome dual timeline story. I was so excited to get to read Fall Back and Find Me. This is the second book I’ve read by this author. The first, A Battle Worth Fighting, was also a Sisters in Arms novel. The story is told in two different eras, during the Civil War and modern day. The modern day story focuses on Amber Prichard, wife to pastor Mark Prichard and mom to twins Jordan and Victor. She tries to be the model pastor’s wife and servant to those in need, so much so that her focus gets a bit out of whack. She is measuring herself on what she does, instead of who she is in Christ. And focusing a bit much on reward from my point of view, instead of selflessly serving. Then she finds herself diagnosed with a delibitating chronic illness that she does not know how to deal with. No longer is she the one helping others, she finds herself the one in need of help, something she struggles greatly with. In the modern day story there is also another narrator, Lily, a young lady stuck at home helping her mother with her special needs siblings, when she desires to be out on her own, not having to deal with all the stress. I admit, I didn’t realize there were going to be more than two points of view in the story, so I was confused at first when she was introduced. And I wasn’t exactly sure how her story was going to intersect with that of Amber and her family, though I had my suspicions. But even before that was made clear, I found myself enjoying her part of the story and learning more about her and her family, and her frustrations. During the Civil War part of the story, we follow Willow Forester, a strong independent young woman who finds herself following her brother Milo to war in their state of Missouri. I have to say, I discovered there was a lot I did not know about the Civil War while reading Willow’s, or “Will’s” part of the story. Will found herself fighting for the opposite side she thought they would be on, not realizing her brother’s true loyalty. Like Amber, she was looking for her worth in the wrong places. There was also another point of view the story was told from in the Civil War era, though exactly who the character was was not made clear right away. There were some interesting twists in this story. And it was very emotional at times. I found myself in tears more than once. I had trouble putting this book down because I cared so much about these characters and needed to know what was going to happen. I loved seeing their relationship with the Lord grow through their struggles. Here is a quote that stuck with me: “I am loved. Here in my brokenness. Here in the hurt and the not quite and the not yet. I"ve fallen short of who I've wished I could be, who I thought I should be, in a thousand ways, yet none of that matters here with Him. I am fully and completely loved just as I am, without ever having to change.” Definitely a book I recommend.
I received a free copy of the book from the publisher. and was not required to write a favorable review. These are my own, honest thoughts.
My first thought when Fall Back and Find Me comes to mind, is that we need more books like this! Women's fiction that covers everyday, real life issues like a chronic illness. While I don't have a chronic illness, I completely felt for Amber. You hear real life stories about invisible illnesses, and the author did an excellent job of what that looks like for the person living with the illness, their family, and those around them. And don't even get me started on her mother! hahahaha
I can't tell you how many times I wanted to haul off and give some people the "what for!" We're told not to take up other people's crosses, but in this instance, I was ready to do it for Amber. Living the story through Amber's eyes really gives the reader painful insight to what she deals with on a regular basis. As her role as pastor's wife shrinks in the rearview mirror, she's forced to figure out who she is in Christ. There are times it's hard to watch as she struggles with her identity, her perceived failures, and fear of losing her family. I'm getting all worked up again thinking of the awful people who treat her so terribly. On the flip side, how well she's loved by so many people gives me hope that there are still good people in the world.
Then we meet Willow! What a tenacious gal. Living during the Civil War times, Willow doesn't have a lot of worth in her father's eyes. All she wants to do is prove herself to him and gain his love. When that doesn't happen, she follows her brother into war disguised as a boy.
I loved how she used her skills (which she didn't realize she had) to rise in the ranks and respect of the military. I just felt so bad for her because She just wanted recognition, but it kept alluding her. Watching her brother rise up through the ranks bristles, so she strives even harder. In the midst of it all, she starts to realize there's something wrong with her physically. There's nothing she can do about it except to keep pressing on!
This author knocked it out of the ballpark on every level of this story. It was well written, characters were easy to care for, she stirred up all kinds of emotions in me, and the thread of faith was strong! I'll be diving into more of her books and can't wait!
*I received this book for review. This is my personal opinion.
Fall Back and Find Me by Sarah Hanks is a dual-timeline book. The gist of the two timeline stories is one is about a secret female Civil War soldier and the main character in the other timeline is a pastor’s wife. Oh what can I say to convince you you have to read this. I loved it and it's so good, does not do this book justice. The two stories connect to give you a full view of Amber’s family tree. Amber is the pastor’s wife and is going through some real life struggles not only physically but also mentally as she is battling her heart's true intentions to be the perfect pastor’s wife and also determined to not be like her mother. There were times in her story you just wanted to slap some people. Sarah Hanks really makes the story come to life and does great character development that you are going to be so enthralled in the story you’re either going to feel like you are Amber or you're going through this trial right next to her. Then there is Willow, sweet and strong Willow who signs up to fight in the Civil War. Her desire to fit in, find herself, and prove that she is somebody is something I think in one way or the other we can all relate to. Fall Back and Find Me is a beautiful story with real life application of who we need to turn to even in our trials and the answer of where/who we need to be placing our identity in. Sarah Hanks always weaves a beautiful depiction of Jesus’ love for us even in the midst of some really hard things. I love that she doesn’t shy away from the feelings of anger and frustration that we have towards God when going through things we don’t understand. My favorite verse throughout was Isaiah 40:29 He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.
I loved this split timeline story. Deals beautifully with chronic illness and women during the civil war. I loved hearing Amber’s inner thoughts so much. How she struggled to be the “perfect pastors wife”. Very well done. I love how the timeliness fit together and they find their true identities in Christ. I would have loved to see more of Amber and Mark learning to communicate during her illness and see their marriage grow stronger but, I know that wasn’t the main focus of the book. Super happy with this new book by Sarah Hanks! Will be reading more!!
This book is amazing. I highly suggest you read this. The book sends a powerful message that helps you grow closer to God. I can not express how good this book is. The book is thrilling and impactful. You will not want to put it down. This book is interesting and fun to read. I don't know what else to say but how good it is. If you take the time to read it you won't regret it. I hope you read this book and enjoy it as much as I do.
A dual time-line novel with stories intersecting in shared roots and similar health conditions.
Amber is a modern-day pastor’s wife who finds her purpose in church outreach. Willow is a young woman who strives for her father’s approval, but when faced with being shut inside for her own protection, leaves home, and joins the Union army with her brother. When faced with a debilitating disease, both women come to grips with who they are and more importantly, whose they are.
I LOVE this book! The dual time line is so well done, the real life struggles are so relatable and Sarah makes the characters come alive on the page! You won’t regret reading this book! Sarah Hanks has quickly become one of my favorite authors!
This book is one of the most inspiring books I have ever read. The characters are so real and transparent and the struggles and triumphs are relatable. The waiting, the doubting if God really sees or cares and the resolution that He is always working and cares is woven seamlessly into a well done split time novel. This 3 woman’s stories are not something I’m soon to forget!
Fall Back and Find Me is a dual timeline novel with themes of redemption, self discovery, finding true faith, and dealing with chronic illness. I really related to the modern day character’s attempts to earn her place by doing good works. I learned a lot about Missouri’s struggles in the Civil War when the book switched over to the perspective from the past. As a lifelong Missouri resident this was very interesting for me. I enjoyed the stories from both time periods and really liked discovering how they connected.
As someone with chronic illness I am always looking for good stories that involve a main character with some kind of chronic illness and how it helps their faith grow. I guess it gives me a sense of being seen. I was excited to read this one and it did not disappoint! I related so much to Amber and her thoughts and feelings. Some times I still have those. The dual timeline was done well and I found it interesting how the different time periods treated the same disease. I highly recommend this book. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher.
This was a wonderful book but hard for me to read at the same time. To have a friend who not only dealt with POTS but to read about the struggles brought to life in this book it was just eye opening and heart breaking at the same time. Amber was such a trooper and tried to do so much for everyone it was like GOD was using her POTS to make her slow down and rely on HIM and others. Willows search for acceptance and self discovery at a critical time in history made the reader feel like they were IN the story and having to deal with what females felt and had to indoor back then.
This book is a must-read for anyone with interest in:
-The American Civil War -Female Soldiers -German-American History -Chronic illness (specifically POTS) -A great story
I love Sarah's writing and the fact that she is not afraid to tackle modern-day issues like chronic illness, caregiving, and the lack of empathy within the church. I'm also constantly impressed that she is willing to take on war stories and battle scenes while I believe she's never been in combat herself. And she does it all while weaving a split-time story beautifully. Five stars for this book!
I loved this book! What a refreshing, honest, and absorbing read. I was delighted to get two stories in one and have the author bring all the threads of both stories together. God is with us no matter our circumstance and challenges. Thank you for writing such an engaging, inspirational book! I highly recommend to all!
Oh my goodness, this book! Seriously, so good. And not in the cheerful sort of way, but in the sit down and process everything to get through all the emotions sort of way. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, and I’m so thankful Sarah was brave enough to pour her heart and soul, combined with her personal experiences with chronic illness, into this book. I hope many people read this and think about how they reach out and care for others, as well as understanding that their value isnt wrapped up in what they do, but in who they are in Christ. Job very well done!
I have really become a fan of dual timelines, especially when the stories intertwine and the characters learn more about why they are who they are. This story is an amazing story about pain, illness, and finding the meaning in who you are in the eyes of your creator. I loved the storyline and learned so much about a disease I knew little about. Great read.
Fall Back and Find Me is the second book I have read written by Sarah Hanks and I look forward to reading more. This is the second book in the Sisters in Arms series and it can be read as a stand-alone. I have read books two and three in the series. This is a dual-timeline series, and it was so fun. It hooked me in from the very beginning.
The character development was great. Amber is the pastor’s wife and is used to doing everything. Then she comes down with a chronic illness POTS and has to learn how to live with the limitations her body is setting on her. She is having a hard time with that and struggles with God, while also dealing with her mother’s mental illness and her trauma of being in the foster system for a time. Lily is someone at church who comes to help Amber, but she has her struggles she is trying to run away from at home. Willow is a relative who was a woman who fought in the Civil War. Each woman is dealing with something and trying to find God in it all.
The storyline and setting were great. It was a fun dynamic dealing with historical and contemporary. It was fun seeing some of the struggles that occurred during the Civil War. It was also enjoyable to realize some of the difficulties that people with chronic illnesses deal with. The author's note also helped put things into perspective.
Sarah Hanks did a great job intertwining faith throughout the book.
*I received a complimentary copy from the author and voluntarily chose to review it. All opinions are my own.
