Punished

Rate this book
Hope springs eternal for everyone except Bella Kynaston. She survived the rape, but the aftermath is a whole other story. She struggles to figure out who she really is as more truths are revealed about her heritage. With no real anchor, sometimes ending it all seems like the only way out.

David has loved Bella for three years. Too bad he feels as if he no longer deserves a chance with her. Much to his surprise that’s exactly what he gets, but she’s far more damaged than he ever imagined. Still, he’ll do anything to help her even if it means losing himself in the process. Any transgression can be forgiven. Or so he thinks.

Will Bella find the peace she so desperately seeks if the pain permanently ended? Is there someone who can get to her in time? Or will the damage she’s suffered prove too much to bear?

Writers exist because they have a story to tell. Sometimes it’s whatever comes out of our imagination. Other times it’s something that comes from our own experiences. Either way, I believe we can learn from every book we read and every book (as authors) we write. The more I write and read, the better at my craft I become. No school can teach me that, but it can still give me the basics. That is the reason I’ll be finishing my Bachelor’s and moving on to my Master’s.

Punished for those who are into dark reads, is one that you will feel at home with but readers, if you are not a fan of dark reads then this isn't the book for you. Reading this book, I was a little confused as it starts with a girl Bella waking up and having nightmares and further down the reader realises it is due to her survival of a vicious attack that ended in rape. We then jump over to Jeremiah, who has recieved a letter and instructions to keep watch over Bella and to keep her safe but under no circumstances is he to interfere with her life and let himself be seen , he has to remain a ghost. Can a girl suffer more tragedy and agony ? How much can one person take before it reaches just too much for her to want to live another day ? How much torture and pain can one person go through before they just want it to stop ? This part I could reasonate with as the last few years and some more, in my life pain and agony and events just don't stop happening and it's one drama after another and I do wonder what life would be like if I was born into a drama-free house or when I was younger , not as much anymore I had thoughts on how simple it would be if I just ended my life now and then all that pain, tragedy and stuff that make's life suck would just vanish and I wouldn't have to worry about it anymore and how my life would be so much easier- since I would be dead. Back to Bella, she has just found out not only that she was adopted, but that her biological parents were trouble and now the one person she thought she loved and could rely on has dumped her in her time of need. Has Bella been pushed to the edge and decided to take the easy option out of this life or hiding in the shadows, will there be someone waiting on the sidelines as a last hope to save Bella from her troubles and show her that her life is worth saving and living for ?

About: Bella is slipping into a downward spiral. Refusing to deal with her pain and the trauma she's dealt with, she turns to pills and alcohol. The one person she thought she could trust has turned his back on her and she doesn't know how to deal. She finds herself growing closer to David. Nobody is happy about this development because they don't think she's with him for the right reasons. They also feel that David is dangerous.
Plot: I really enjoyed this book. I mean it's very dark and very disturbing. I'm not going to sugar coat things here. But it's worth the read if it won't be a trigger for you. It was a slight trigger for me, but it also helped me cope. I will say that the first book should be read first. It will help this book make a lot more sense. Be prepared to have your emotions hit constantly!
Characters: I really didn't care for Bella at all in this book. I get that she was going through some things, but I wanted to just shake her and tell her to get it together. Her friends weren't really that great of a help either! It was unnerving to see how quickly she was turned on.
Suggestions: I can't think of any
Recommend: Yes! Please read Addicted first.

I received an ARC when I signed up and was selected to host the book tour. I made no guarantee of a favorable review and the opinions expressed are my own.

Bella continues to suffer pain and is crippled by the revelation that she is adopted and who her folks are. I will say that this is not a stand alone book so Destroyed must be read first to avoid any confusion in this the second book. Secondly, I certainly enjoyed this book more than the first one.

This book was darker and emotionally gripped me until the bitter end. I know this is a short review but if I continue to write I will get into spoilers and that is something I do not like to do.

DNF 29% - Unfortunately, it's just not my type of book.

*EDIT 9/22/2015*

For the record, when I originally wrote this review there was only this book in the series (published November 29, 2013 and read in February 2014). A "prequel" (published October 17, 2014) makes sense because this being the first book did not.

*EDIT 3/4/2014*

This was not a content based decision. I have read and thoroughly enjoyed books with rape, murder, and overall devastation as the main concept. The fact that this book also features these issues was actually a bit of a selling point for me. Highly charged book? BRING IT ON.

First of all, before I get into the nitty gritty, I would like to say that I do commend the author for writing and publishing a book. That takes a lot of effort, and I respect that thoroughly. I would also like remind you of the well known fact that different books do appeal to different people. You CANNOT win them all. I wish you could, but there will always be that one person that just isn't satisfied. PLEASE do not get discouraged if some readers do not enjoy the story.

For those reading this review, that may apply to you. If you are interested, do not be scared to give it a try. I've found many books I enjoyed simply by giving it a chance (See Rhinoceros Summer). I encourage you to do the same despite what you might read next. As a matter of fact, if you ARE interested, stop reading this review now. I'm about to give my opinion.

I took notes during the portion of the book I did read. I wanted to be able to come back and give a proper review; full of quotes and gushy scenes. Instead, they started out filled with doubt. I let a friend of mine look at my notes and she noted that they got progressively more and more angry as I went on. THAT was when I decided to put the book down.

I love to read; and I love to read highly emotional books and even controversal/taboo reads. This was different though. I'm not sure how to explain it; I was angry with the whole book, not the unjust events that occurred within it.

I do not wish to share my notes specifically because, as I said before, I got quite angry. I will, however, politely point out the issues that resulted in my (possibly unpopular) opinion. Keep in mind that I was not able (and will not be able) to finish the book; so if my issues completely change at a later time, I'm sorry, but I won't be aware of them.

Damaged is the second book in the Dark Road series by Krys Fenner, and it picks up where Addicted left off.

Bella is now dealing, or trying to deal, with the events that happened in book one. Unfortunately for her, things aren't getting any easier. In fact, they seem to be getting worse. She's spiraling and struggling, but she pretends she's fine and hopes that somehow, miraculously, everything will work itself out in the end.

With Jeremiah out of the picture, it's time for David, the boy Bella was tutoring, to make his move. Can he bring her out of the darkness, or is she too damaged to save?

I found myself a little more invested in the characters this time around. Addicted was good, but Damaged was a little bit better, at least for me. I was anxious to see if Bella would finally find a healthy way to cope with the awfulness of her past. I wanted to root for her and see her work through everything.

Instead, I found myself frustrated and almost angry at Bella for the way she was acting and behaving. I mean, I truly get that she went through a really awful, traumatic experience, and reacting badly is, I guess, a way of coping, but... I just don't get it. She has loving, caring parents. She has people who would be more than willing to help her. Instead, she shuns them and does whatever she feels like doing to try and stop the pain. She starts down a dark road, and she doesn't seem to care at all about what others might think or feel. She's a bit selfish, at least in my opinion.

I also was angry at Jeremiah. He sort of just let Bella go, and he didn't bother even trying to make things right or find out how she was handling things until it was almost too late.

To be honest, I kinda hated every character in this book, except for maybe Jeremiah's parents. Bella's parents aren't awful, but they could have tried a bit harder, I think.

Plot-wise, the book is definitely emotional in so many ways. Like I said above, I felt a lot of anger while reading this book, but there are also some really sad scenes, too. It's definitely a tough story to get through. Worth the read, though.

I give Damaged 3.5 stars. I'm curious to see where the story will go after all of this.

The writing style / editorial work within this book is hard to stomach. I pushed my way through it because I needed closure for Bellas story. This book does not bring that closure. It ends much like the first book, with a scene end, and random questions that the reader should already be thinking, without them being pointed out. Damaged was a little too over dramatic for my tastes. Where Addicted really hit some hot points for rape victims and addicts, Damaged took it a little too over the top. There were many scenes where I was questioning the realism of it, and why it needed to be soo over dramatic. But that is me basing my thoughts that the author wanted the books to have a real life feel to them.

Another great cover from Krys Fenner! She apparently loves great covers. Addicted is one of my favorites! Damaged is book 2 in the Dark Road series. It picks up right where Addicted left off. I believe this book was orginally written as a standalone; however, I would only recommend reading if you read Addicted first.

This book was even better than the first. The transitions improved greatly this time which was wonderful with so many different POVs. Krys Fenner did a much better job at making the story flow. It was really a much faster read. But... another cliff! Again, I went into Addicted blind and didn't expect a cliffhanger. I went into this book without so much as reading the blurb, but the next installment comes out in March, so the wait will be short despite not realizing it would end on another cliffhanger.

The characters are well-developed and it was inspiring to see Bella finally start making some better choices. I'm anxious to see where the author takes this story, and I think it will really make or break this series. It's really a great dark YA!

I won this book though Goodreads Giveaways

Dark Road Punished is a great book with a heartbreaking story. Bella's life is torn apart in a moment, her world tarnished and her soul shattered. Bella can't figure out how to move on or let go of her devastating attack so instead she lets it break her and change her into someone no one recognizes. While I can never understand Bella's situation I do think Fenner does a great job a representing the aftermath of a horrible act. I'm not saying I agree with all the choices Bella made or actions she took, some I even saw as down right ridiculous, some people break so deeply they are impossible to be fixed. I would defiantly like more answers like what David and Jeremiah's letters say, what the hell happened the night of the shooting and why doesn't she remember, who the other attacker is ( i sadly think its some one she is close to) but mostly how is Bella going to, if she is going to begin to mend? So many unanswered questions, I really hope Fenner plans to continue Bella's story because its far from over.

This is the second book in Bella's story. Bella's story is one of pain and suffering and what extreme's she goes to in order to ease some of it. The amount of pain and heartache a person goes after being the victim of terrible things is shown vividly in this story, it is a palpable one that makes you want to take this young girl and hug it all away for her. That perhaps makes this a hard story to read, but also well worth the read.

Not only is she trying to recover from the violent acts she suffered, but she is trying hard to cope with the news of finding out she was adopted and who her parents are, as well as why her boyfriend who risked his life to protect her dumps her like she is yesterday's news. All this of course is weighing heavy on the young girl's mind and proofs to be quite a read as you travel on the painful journey with her.

It should be noted that the book starts out with a rape scene, it's not extremely graphic, but does need to be mentioned as it could prove to be a trigger for those that have suffered through such a terrible attack.

I received a free copy from good reads first reads.

I found this book hard to put down.
Bella survives a violent attact. It changes her and her relationships with friends and family. She wants to put it behind her and move on but she can't. She finds out she has to testify at the trial and her attacker keeps contacting her from jail.
She discovers who her true friends are and who she loves.
I will definately read more books from this auhor.

Won this in a giveaway.

The book was good. Though it did talk about a touchy subject. This book is centered around rape and the main characters struggle. I don't typically read books like this because I don't care for them. However I was pretty happy with this one. The end left me with some questions but the acknowledgement section hinted that this will be a series. So I'll sit back and wait and hope we find out more!

Overall I did like this book. But my one complaint would be that it left me with questions. I wish it would have wrapped up a little bit better. If this becomes a series, I would be interested in reading the next book.

I received a free copy of this book through Goodreads. (It has been quite a while since I read this book. I had actually reviewed it before but for some reason the review didn't save. Sorry it took me so long to realize.
