Started this Bible study with friends but finished it on my own.
This study is extensive because it breaks chapters down into smaller portions so you can really reflect portions on the text. Study took much longer than I wanted (I stopped along the way and picked it up again) but I’m so glad I finished.
I’m grateful to God for N.T. Wright. His teachings are deeply insightful and I’ve learned a lot.
I love Wright's stuff. We used this book as a study for Sunday School. I wish it had accompanying video to follow up with each chapter. Wright's questions were too broad IMO on this book. Having a video would have been better so Mr. Wright could explain where he was going with some of his questions.
I really appreciated N.T Wright's survey of the book of Matthew. I can honestly say that it helped deepen my comprehension of scripture. He has lots of great discussion questions in the back that would be great for either journaling or group Bible study. I'm interested in checking out more books in this series.
We are using this as a textbook for our adult church school class. It is wonderful. His questions are penetrating, and his remarks are illuminating. We are currently using this book as a primary textbook for our adult church school class, and it has proven to be an excellent resource. The content is engaging and thought-provoking, encouraging meaningful discussions among participants. The author's questions delve deeply into the subject matter, prompting us to reflect on our beliefs and experiences. Additionally, his insightful remarks provide valuable context and understanding, making the lessons both enlightening and enriching for everyone involved.
I got this book to assist me in preparing sessions for a Thursday evening Bible study, in which I was using N. T. Wright's wonderful Matthew for Everyone as my primary guide through the gospel. Because I wanted to work through the book at a faster pace than this study guide outlined, I didn't follow it very precisely. Often Bible study guides for groups fail terribly, because they can't rise above lists of obvious questions (as in, "'God so loved the world.' All right, now let's discuss: What did God so love?" Ugh.). A good Bible study group for adults is something that, in my life at least, has been very hard to come by. I hope that this one that I've been leading over the past year is a bit better, but sometimes I wonder.
Anyway, this study guide is slightly better than most, if only because it directly references Wright's general-audience commentary. For me, it was often helpful to think back through what I'd read in Wright, and suggest questions that would truly be good discussion starters. For that purpose, it worked well for me and our group. If I were to lead another study through another of Wright's For Everyone books, I would probably pick up the related study guide again.
I find myself wanting to rate this book between "okay" and "I liked it". There were a few good thought provoking questions in each section, which I liked being challenged by. However, the other questions in each section were fairly straight forward and simple. I did enjoy the author's historical insight in some of the sections of the gospel of Matthew, which helped me understand more the context of that particular scripture. This book would also probably make a good group study book as well. I would recommend this book to people who are just starting to discover scripture for the first time as well.
