Rob Liefeld is an American comic book writer, illustrator, and publisher. A prominent artist in the 1990s, he has since become a controversial figure in the medium.

In the early 1990s, self-taught artist Liefeld became prominent due to his work on Marvel Comics' The New Mutants and later X-Force. In 1992, he and several other popular Marvel illustrators left the company to found Image Comics, which rode the wave of comic books owned by their creators rather than by publishers. The first book published by Image Comics was Rob Liefeld's Youngblood #1.

He is married to actress Joy Creel.

I like this book. I genuinely do. Which greatly surprised me because "Youngblood" is the brainchild of Rob Liefeld, a highly divisive figure in the comic industry to say the least. I've read three other books by Liefeld which were "Supreme: Madness", Youngblood: Baptism by Fire", and "Extreme Sacrifice", all of which are just badly written. So I did some research into why "Youngblood" was so much better than all the other things Liefeld had authored and I found my answer. Rob Liefeld didn't write any of the dialogue in this book, the actual writer was Joe Casey. You see in 2007 Casey was working on the 4th Youngblood series (which is collected in Youngblood, Vol. 1: Focus Tested & Youngblood, Volume 2: Voted Off the Island) and the comic publisher wanted to reignite interest in the Youngblood by releasing the first five issues of the original series. There was just one problem with that. The original series was bad. Dark Age 90s bad. So higher ups had the bright idea of polishing this rusted out beater of a series by remastering it. All of the dialogue was rewritten by Casey, the series was completely recolored, the original two-in-one issues were rearranged to form a coherent story, and an introduction was written by Mark Millar. The resulting remaster was a surprisingly solid and enjoyable product...because the publisher cut almost all of Liefeld's influence...ouch! But on the positive side this book does prove that Liefeld's idea of a government operated team of celebrity superheroes could be fun and enjoyable if properly executed. This book is a remaster done right and I highly recommend it!

You know, Robe Liefeld is villified within the industry more often than not, but I think he helped revolutionize the industry in the early 90s, and has a lot of good ideas. When you combine those ideas with someone who can actually write, you get something like this. I thought this was a rollicking good redo, much of it do to Joe Casey's phenominal dialogue.

Rob Liefeld, why oh why am I drawn to your crappy style?
It's utter shit and has no redeeming qualities to it; yet, I continue to love it just like all of your stunted 30-going-on-14 year-old fans.

What in the name of all the fucks is this shit?!

A joke?!

Self-parody?!

Has the idiot who drew this garbage ever seen an actual human being?!

Fans were always drawn to Rob Liefeld because of his debut work on New Mutants and X-Force. Because of that, comic book speculators went wild and it convinced comic book companies to dig into alternate covers, gimmick covers and to treat comic books as a collector's market of sorts. Rob Liefeld simply has no grasp on the anatomy of the human body, which is why he is so chastised by fans, critics and professionals.

The thing is, Rob Liefeld is a no-talent hack. Has there ever been a deadline that he couldn't make? The only thing he does with any consistently is just cover art. The man has burned more bridges than any professional in the industry. The only good thing about Youngblood is that he no longer owns the rights to the very comic book he created.

He went running back to Marvel, with his tail between his legs because Marvel is the only company who will hire him back. That's because of his recent vitriol remarks aimed at D.C. Comics and I think that was done as a jab at Jim Lee, who is a much better writer and artist than Rob Liefeld.

Rob Leifeld's Image Comics debut. And it's terrible. There are grains of story here that *could* be good, and I feel like that's all Joe Casey, but the execution and art is just so god awful I want to cry.

I loved this. I such an obvious homage to his favourite comics and some of their big stories that I can’t help but enjoy it. Also I thought the art was great overall, sure its focused on style over accuracy but its consistent and fun.

A guilty pleasure, for sure. Not a good story, but good dumb fun! I don’t know why, but I love Liefeld’s work. I enjoyed the new scripting by Casey, and the colors were amazing.
