Review for the complete series

Sugar Soldier is a great series if you enjoy cute shoujo fluff. The characters are all likeable, the romance is sweet and largely drama-free with both leads treating each other sweetly. There are nice friendships and family relations that don't fall short either. The art is quite typical shoujo but very pretty, definitely one of Sakai's best art-wise.

Although this series does delve into some more serious themes - child abandonment, terminal illness, sibling rivalry and even an implied sexual assault - I found this to be an incredibly light series. It's great as it gives it a nice wholesome feeling without having to over complicate things. But it also means there's no true conflict to overcome which means the series bumbles along a little bit. This is by no means a bad thing as it'll be perfect if you truly just want a cute high school romance with friendships, but it won't pack the same punch as some more complex series. I definitely would recommend for fans of the genre though.

In diesem Band verbringt die Gruppe eine gemeinsame Zeit im Ferienhaus von Nanamis Oma. Wie das Schicksal es so will, hat Shun während dieser Zeit auch noch Geburtstag und die Gruppe plant eine Überraschungsparty für ihn, die beinahe daneben ging… Ich finde es total cute, dass sich Shun und Makoto unbewusst dasselbe schenken wollten und oben drauf hat Makoto ihm gegenüber ihre Liebe gestanden doch wie geht es nun weiter ? Besonders gut haben mir die bonusseiten gefallen wo wir kurze Einblicke sowohl aus Rikas, als auch aus Shuns Vergangenheit bekommen haben.

This volume takes place during the summer break. In this volume, we get to have a sneak peak at Iriya's past and the reason behind his 'perfect' personality. Well, I was hoping for some progression between Makoto and Iriya since the both of them have such good chemistry. Pretty bummed by the end of the volume...

Was, wenn der Shun, in den du dich verliebt hast, gar nicht existiert? Wenn alles an mich gar nicht echt ist, was dann?

Waaas?

Ich bin so enttäuscht von Shun!! Die Clique von Makoto and Shun fährt zum Meer um Shuns Geburtstag zu feiern. Endlich gesteht Makoto ihm ihre Liebe und Shun gibt ihr einen Korb. Traurig!! Aber Makoto ist sehr fröh, weil sie so mutig war.

Am ende gibt es zwei bonusgeschichte, die sehr nett sind. Die erste erzählt, was Rika auf der Schule als Model erlebt. In der zweite geht es um Issei und seine Freundschaft mit Shun.
