A summer drought and epidemic illness in 1847 force Mina, Papa, and his new wife, Lisette, to move on to a larger land grant deep in Comanche territory
1847 near Fredericksberg, Texas / Willow Creek, Texas. 12 year old Mina and her family continue to face hardships as the drought kills their crop. The family decides to take the risk of being attacked by Comanches by claiming a better piece of land to farm near Willow Creek. Partially based on the author's ancestor's experiences.
When Mina was given a horse that had originally belonged to a Comanche, Comanche Indians kept coming and trying to take it back. It made me wonder if maybe they had a more legitimate claim that Mina's family was unaware of.
This story uses real events of early central Texas German settlements (I.e. Fredericksburg). It left me wanting to learn more about the settlers' experiences. An interesting read and the second in a series of three.
