Half travel tips and half travel memoir, The Slacker Pilgrim Guide to the Camino de Santiago is a humorous book about the famous pilgrim trail across the north of Spain. In April and May 2012, Sunshine Jen walked 550 miles on the Camino Frances to Santiago de Compostela then onto Finnisterre on the coast. She went looking for answers, but she came back with more questions and no blisters.
Jen would have been a fun person with whom to walk the Camino… I appreciated her tips and advice (the first third of the book) and enjoyed reading what was essentially her diary from her time on the Camino. This thing needed a serious copy editor (a lot of inconsistent capitalization, a couple of glaring misspellings—“desert” for “dessert,” “alter” when it should have been “altar”, etc.), but I’m sure that’s just my OCD talking. I’ve been reading quite a few Camino memoirs as I prepare for my own pilgrimage and this was one of the most engaging and entertaining, so: thanks, Jen :-)
Fun, fast read - read this in a couple of hours when I wasn't feeling well and wanted something to divert me. More a travel journal than a guide, though - the guide part is only about 1/3th of the book, the rest is a log of the author's own Camino. But she has a way with words and a sense of humour that shone through, so it perfectly suited my purpose.
I'll be walking part of the Camino soon. I loved this book. It told me what I needed to know. Wardrobe, wine, toothpaste, and chocolate croissants... what else do I need to know? Really, I enjoyed reading a book by a woman about my age doing what I hope to do soon. Thank you Sunshine Jen.
This book was an enjoyable light read. I was planning to walk the Camino in the Spring of 2015, and this book was among those I chose to read before I went. Along with some of the other books I read, this book helped to provide a picture of what it might be like to walk the camino.
