A year and a half ago I sat at one of those blood pressure checkers at Wal-mart and was shocked to see 170/92. Many follow ups proved it wasnt a fluke. I did a lot of research and found this book by Nobel winner Dr. Ignarro. I read it in a day and did everything it told me to. My blood pressure went from a frequent high of 170/93 to a consistent normal 122/80 over 18 months later. My BP dropped like crazy the first two weeks I was on the plan and stayed low. A few specific supplements and easy changes to food and exercise had me at normal levels and sleeping better than ever before. I never had to go on blood pressure meds and this book has helped a couple family members who were alrready on them to lower the amounts they need.
Dr Jouis J. Ignarro won the Nobel prize for his discoveries related to Nitric Oxide which is the NO in his title - a play on words.
While this book represents his attempt to monetize his discoveries I commend him for doing something to get his story out. After all he didn't make a ton of money being reward the Nobel prize.
The book is about several common vitamins and minerals that can be used to increase the levels of Nitric Oxide in the body which is great for not only the heart, it's the natural alternative for Viagra and Cealis with non of their devastating side effects.
A well researched book by Dr. Ignarro, a researcher who was awarded the Nobel laureate in medicine in 1998 along with fellow researchers Robert Furchgott and Ferid Murad based on their discovery of Nitric Oxide (NO) as a signaling molecule in the cardiovascular system.
While this book was published in 2007, Ignarro believes the research to be in its infancy. He draws compelling conclusions from his research as well as the research of others that support focusing on NO production with the use of supplements, nutrition changes and exercise enhancements. I will definitely continue my research for more current protocols and also outline the finer points in the book to present to my doctor for possible inclusion in my own heart health journey.
I only rated it a 4 as I have not tried the protocol so I can’t speak to its efficacy just yet. Right now I’m cautiously optimistic.
Dr. Ignarro's Nobel Prize work on nitric oxide sounds complex, but this book breaks it down so a regular person can understand it and actually apply it. The concept that your arteries need to produce enough NO to prevent clots and control blood pressure is simple enough, but what sold me was the practical plan he lays out.
The supplements, NO-friendly foods, and breath training aren't extreme, they're actually doable. What clicked for me was realizing this ties together a lot of general health advice I've heard (exercise, specific foods, managing stress) into one clear mechanism. It's not just "eat better", it's why certain approaches work at the cellular level.
Already incorporated his recommendations into my routine and feel like I actually understand what I'm doing for my cardiovascular health instead of just following rules. Solid foundation if you care about prevention.

Pretty much a life-changing read. Ignarro won a Nobel Prize for his breakthrough research on Nitric Oxide. This is an easy to read book on how to implement a few simple changes into your diet and lifestyle - changes that will not only give you a dramatically healthier cardiovascular system, but also more energy, drive, and happiness. What he says works (been almost 3 years since I first read this book). Science can be VERY cool, and this book is a must read for pretty much anyone and everyone.

I'm about to start taking some of the supplements suggested by Dr. Ignarro, so if they make a big difference in my health, I'll change my rating. Other than that, his exercise and eating guidelines are no different than any other "diet".
