This book provides an easy-to-follow roadmap for successfully implementing the Balanced Scorecard methodology in small- and medium-sized companies. Building on the success of the first edition, the Second Edition includes new cases based on the author's experience implementing the balanced scorecard at government and nonprofit agencies. It is a must-read for any organization interested in achieving breakthrough results.
Paul Niven's latest book is BALANCED SCORECARD EVOLUTION (Wiley, August 2014).
He is a noted speaker and writer on the subjects of Strategy, the Balanced Scorecard, and Performance Management. He has delivered keynote addresses at conference events around the world and has published in a number of noted journals.
His first book, Balanced Scorecard Step-by-Step: Maximizing Performance and Maintaining Results has been translated to over a dozen languages around the globe.
I read the Balanced Scorecard to help me with my job as an assistant principal of a large high school. I was hoping that the information would give me some insight in how to better lead my staff and students to making positive changes for the future. Niven does have some strong ideas but I wish he went more into the nuts and bolts in how to do the Balanced Scorecard. I honestly believe that kind of information would have been more helpful especially with finding ways to make this strategy a success in public education.
Really relevant. Working on an interactive strategy for a non-profit arts organization, and this was a fantastic manual. Good to have read the first couple of chapters of Balanced Scorecard first, but not necessary.
Gaining the benefits of the balanced scorecard for your agency
Government and nonprofit agencies are not always familiar with common business management tools. For such organizations, Paul R. Niven defines the Balanced Scorecard and provides a guide on how to adapt and implement it, demonstrating how agency managers can identify and set up the measurements they need. His language is clear and instructive, and he includes illustrations and a summary at the end of each chapter. Nothing in this book is earth-shattering, but it is a solid, useful guide. getAbstract recommends it to public-sector managers who want to professionalize their operations.
Not a book to be read straight through! It's best to use this as a guide to improving practices. While the information it contains seems intuitive, it is the way of organizing it that is most revolutionary. Our agency is implementing the procedure rather avidly, and I believe it will be beneficial.
In many ways, this system is the foundation for all planning and measurement models today. This book is laid in exactly as is advertised, with step-by-step instructions, diagrams, and tables. It may occasionally feel like you're eating your vegetables, just remember that vegetables are good for you. ;-)
