I loved this follow up into to the lives of NHL star, Jason Ryke and the beautiful, Kate Camden. Honestly written, emotional and heartwarming Brenda Rothert has delivered a more than worthy second look into this couple's life. Normally for my reading tastes I can struggle with a continuing series written about the same characters, but this author gave me fresh, engaging writing and pulled me into a storyline that held my rapt attention. This won't be the last time I grab this authors work, I'm well and truly sold, here are my 'Captive' book thoughts ...
What's it all about? Kate and Ryke fell hard and fast in love, after months of being inseparable they decided to make things official and Ryke made the love of his life his forever. Ryke would do anything to keep his sweetheart happy but sometimes life is cruel and after just a few months of wedding bliss they have to start fighting to survive the storms of life. But will they be fighting through the difficulties together or will they be torn apart by the heartache and darkness. 'Captive' is the follow on story to book one 'Bound' in Brenda Rothert's touching story of Ryke and Kate's journey of love.
What did I love? Often times a follow up novel centred around the same couple can often seem like an authors attempt to drag out a series and I have to confess that with some series I can get bored and distracted. But I can gladly say that nothing about this series is unnecessary in fact I felt impressed with the authors planning out of each book and it's content. I loved the fact that Kate is still irresistible to Ryke his love could never be questioned but like most true-to-life couples they find that their true love path takes some knocks. Kate finds herself broken once again and we are taken in on a sensitively written journey of pain, healing and self discovery as this couple navigate even more heart shattering circumstances. As I've said many a time before I can't resist a sports themed romance so I really appreciated the added ice hockey related scenes that were included in book two. Ryke is what romance hero dreams are made of, equal parts gorgeous, alpha and sportsman made him an irresistible combination. I loved his unending love and adoration for Kate and I was glad to see more involvement of his friendship with Luke in the story. Kate was completely relatable, her difficulties never become annoying or over the top instead the author delivered a heart breaking tale with plenty of romance and love. As for a happily ever after, well you'll have to read the series to find that out, but I'll say this I'm in love with the characters and I'm more than happy to give away four huge stars.
Why not five? As much as I applauded this well put together novel, it had times of feeling a little heavy with the topics it was dealing with, some would say this is not a negative aspect but for for me it took away some of the overall enjoyment factor of my reading experience. But I haven't got any major complaints this book is lovingly written, with relatable characters and true to life relationship difficulties.
Final thoughts ... Brenda Rothert was a 'new to me' author before starting this series, and if these books are anything to go by then I've been missing out. Rothert writes her stories with an emotional twist that tugged at my heart strings and I'm so glad that the series is continuing with Luke's story. I can't wait to find out more about this gorgeous NHL star. Nothing is more appealing to my reading tastes than a sports themed romance and I'm already waiting in anticipation of what this author will do next. If you like your romance to be well thought out with a little heart ache then I'd urge you to pick up this series. I'm a firm fan of what this author has achieved so far with this series, and I don't regret meeting these characters one bit. What you waiting for? Go grab this series, readers. Enjoy ... Kisses.

***4.5 Captivating Stars***
Blue or pink.. one line or two lines..yes or no..positive or negative...plus or minus…. the end result of a pregnancy test can either determine future mommy, happiness, sadness, relief, or disappointment. For Kate Ryker, what if the result is what you least expected after so many disappointment and heartbreak. Does it make you a bad person?
Captive by Brenda Rothert is the second installment of the Fire and Ice series. This book chronicles the life of Jason and Kate Ryker as they survive the many ups and downs of married life. So if you haven’t read Bound, then stop, go and one-click it. It is highly recommended that you must read the first book before reading Captive since it picks off where it last left off in Bound where Ryke and Kate are now married two years later.
There comes a time in every couple’s life where they must decide if they want to expand their mini family of two or not. For Jason and Kate, they knew that they wanted a family. So when Kate got pregnant, the couple was so excited. They couldn’t wait for the new bundle of joy that was growing inside of Kate. After what she went through in Bound, Kate finally found happiness with her husband and pregnancy. Well that all changed one horrible night. For any pregnant woman, the worst nightmare became a reality when Kate had a miscarriage.
Not once but two times Kate lost a baby. The heartbreak, emotional and physical loss became so unbearable for Kate that she fell into a state of shock and depression. As any loving husband, it broke Ryke’s heart to witness and see his wife so down and lost. If he could burden and shoulder all her problems, he would happily do it. When Kate became distant and fearful of getting pregnant again, their married life was in this state of in between. Kate found herself focusing more on work and Ryke buried himself with his hockey career. The only place he could take out his frustration was on the ice. The once lively and spirited Kate that he loved was missing.
After what seemed like an eternity for Ryke, he began to notice a little spark of light and hope in Kate’s eyes when she wanted to start a family through adoption. Ryke, being the loving husband, he supported his wife’s decision for adoption. He, too also wanted a family and knew that they both will love this child as if their own. At a good place in their marriage, Kate and Ryke finally rekindled and ignited their love and passion for each other.
Ryke was at an all time high career wise with his team and Kate was over the moon with their plans for adoption, but there was one slight bump the couple at least expected. Kate knew she didn’t want to get pregnant again after two miscarriages but here she was staring at a pregnancy stick that read PREGNANT. For some women, they would have been thrilled and call it a miracle but with Kate, she was battling with her emotions. Could she go through with the pregnancy? What if she has a miscarriage again? Her plan for adoptions would no longer be an option since she was pregnant. The internal battle that Kate goes through is what draws and captivates the readers. It is a REAL as it can get when describing what most women with fertility issues goes through. The struggle of can you do it again...the what ifs…and if it was meant in the cards for you to be a mom.
When Kate tells her Ryke of the pregnancy, the first reaction of Ryke was disappointment. Not disappointment in his wife is pregnant but hurt that she didn’t tell him right away. For Ryke, he wanted nothing more than to be a dad. With Kate being pregnant, she busies herself with work and befriends a little girl in one of her sessions. When the reality sets in that she’s a couple of months into her pregnancy, hope begins to set in with Kate but there still that lingering fear buzzing in the back of her mind. What can I say about Ryke but I absolutely adore and love him. Yes there were times he got frustrated with Kate and her reasons, but he was always there to support her. He showed her how much he loves and cares for her. The man would gladly sacrifice his life for Kate. As Kate and Ryke starts this new journey in their lives, there are uphill battles that they must face. Through this roller-coaster called life that is filled with many twists and turns, the best thing about this couple is that they did it together. There was never a time where one wanted to get off but instead they held onto each other and never let go. They may not have a perfect life but the most important thing that Kate and Ryke learned was that they did it together.
Captive is one of those emotional books for me. Personally, this book captured as real as it can get of what women with fertility issues goes through. Life is not full of rainbows and roses once you get married. Marriage is a testament of two people who are willing to love to each other for better or for worse, through sickness and in health, and for richer or for poorer. Ryke and Kate was a prime example of a couple who loved each other very much. When Kate and Ryke first met each other they were bound by their grief and loss and now their love and trust in each other held them captive as a united front. I thank Ms. Rothert for deciding to write Captive and allowing her readers to witness the love Kate and Ryke had for each other. I highly recommend everyone to read Captive because it truly captures the true essence of real love.
This is the continuation of Ryke and Kate's story and I just couldn't resist reading it because I wanted more for them.
The story picks up after they are married and they are in the making babies / let's have a family phase of their life.
Kate's fear of not being able to carry a baby after what happened to her the first time she was pregnant comes back to the surface as she still struggles with the grief from that experience.
We follow them as they navigate their way through possible parenthood and the heartache that cames along with that.
I just loved Ryke even more after reading this, he is such a sweetheart and dedicated husband to his beautiful wife.
If you enjoyed Bound then I recommend reading this :)
Captive is the story of Jason and Kate Ryker… well Ryke and Kate since this hockey boy lives by his nickname….the book takes place 2 years into their relationship, with them now married. Their story of meeting and falling in love is told in Bound, so I am going to pause and say if you have not read Bound stop reading this and go 1-click Bound and Captive! As Bound and Captive combine to tell an adult story of life, marriage and well the power of true love.
Picking up Captive was like sitting down with old friends, I was so excited to catch up with Rkye and Kate. The prologue brought a huge smile to my face but within minutes Ms Rothert has a lump in my throat the size of a hockey puck. I was hooked and this became the kind of book that I did not want to put down as I so wanted Kate and Jason to have their happy!!
Throughout Captive the reader get look backs at heartwarming moments in the time between the two books, I love how these were weaved into the story especially because at times they were in contrast to the pain the couple was experiencing at the moment. And no I am not doing to tell you about the pain or the heartache. I am going to try very hard to review this wonderful story without spoilers as I want the reader to experience the books as I did, an unfolding of all that life throws at a couple a couple dealing with their pasts and the life of a powerful and wealthy sports star.
I do want to say I loved many of the secondary characters in Captive, I again feel in love with Luke Hudson, Jason's teammate! In this one Luke opens up just enough to have me wanting to know him more, oh and he is the king of funny moments as he puts up with Ryke and comes back him with some truly humorous lines! Yes, I feel like I should add here that Ms Rothert did a wonderful job with dialogue in this book, not just with Jason and Luke but also with Jason and Kate, happy and sad, loving and argumentative you will often feel like you are right in the middle of their marriage.
Ok back to secondary characters, this books brings the reader new characters to love, characters who truly contribute to this story line and often times especially with Harmony have a character saying things to Kate that you the reader wish you could. Yes, I adored how Harmony was used in this book (no I am not telling you who she is). And I love loved Melody…. both great characters and you will see why when you read this one! Oh and I want to say Stanley was too cute!
Though there was times Kate frustrated me and even times I found her hard to relate to, her emotions and reactions felt true to the character created, to her character, true to her heart and her life experience. To me that is a sign of wonderful writing.
I am not sure if was possible to love Ryke even more but I did, this supportive and kind man truly showed his wife the meaning of true love and family. His devotion to her and their marriage makes him a man I think any woman would love to "snuggle" up to (yes, you will understand that one when you read the book.)
Captive was such a unique story, it a look into marriage and what it means to be family. This one is sticking with me as the journey Kate and Ryke takes is powerful, engaging and sometimes hot look into marriage. And in the end brought a huge smile to my face and warmed my heart!
Thank you to Ms Rothert for allowing the reader to see The Ryker's with a true forever happy!
PS I am dying for Edge (Fire on Ice, #3) Luke's story!
Ooh!! Brenda, you have made my day!! I LOVE LOVED this book!! I had been anxiously waiting for a sequel and you made my wish come true!!
Captive, takes place after Bound and continues the love story of Jason and Kate. Now married, the Rykers now find themselves amidst another devastating loss as well as new trials and challenges that will test their love and faith in one another.
I swear I just LOVED every minute of it!!
An over all, captivating and beautifully done book that initially caught my attention (and won over my heart) with its kindred tragic theme that inspired the series’ background and that I can relate to!!
I now ABSOLUTELY CANNOT WAIT for the next book in the series, Edge, which focuses on Jason’s bestie, Luke’s story!! Yay!! I'm so excited!!

Captive picks up basically where Bound left off and we see Ryke and Kate adjusting to married life and all the trials and tribulations of it. They are happy, in love and looking forward to a bright future when they are once again struck by a loss that not only devastates them both but also puts a big strain on their new marriage.
Honestly Ryke impressed me with his unwavering support and even when he had a few moments of anger towards the situations he was faced with I felt it was warranted. He is one of the good guys, one of those men who will do anything to make those he loves happy, and will sacrifice his happiness for them. I admire him for his strength and dedication and the fact that even though he had some thoughts of taking what was so freely offered by other women he did not because that's not the kind of man he is. There were so many times I wanted to just give him a hug and assure him everything would be okay because he was breaking my heart.
I said it about Kate before but honestly the woman really did need some one on one intensive therapy. I completely understand her grief and even her fears but I hated that she couldn't see what it was doing not only to her but to Ryke and their marriage. She was like trapped in a "Kate" bubble and couldn't see her way out. I did love when she worked with her patients especially one in particular and while I felt that outcome of that came a little too easily for the process in "real" life, it did make me smile to see everyone involved so happy.
What I loved about Bound and Captive both is that while they were a good look at bad things happen to good people; they were realistic for the most part which made the emotions they brought forth so much more but they also showed that while sometimes the journey is hard the results are worth it. I enjoyed this author's style and these books and I look forward to continuing this series.
This is the second book in the Fire On Ice Series and the last book solely about Kate and Ryker. They are happily married and expecting a baby but then the unthinkable happens and Kate miscarries again which is the second loss of a baby for her and the first for Ryke. They are both devastated and Kate plans to take drastic action to prevent a further pregnancy because she just cannot face the trauma of another pregnancy loss. They still pursue their wish for a family and plan to adopt but life throws another curveball and suddenly they are scrambling to readjust again.
Although this novel does contain sad scenes , it also has some really funny , hot and lovely scenes too which balance it out. I loved the threat of the OW too - Ryke just about saves the day and ultimately there is an excellent scene where she gets her marching orders. It was just the right dose of angst without me losing faith in the Hero.
This series is a go to comfort read. In 2024 I read via audio and ebook. Fab narration by Chris Ruen and Kirsten Leigh. Listening time 6hr 37m.
Highly recommend this whole series but please be mindful if you find reading about miscarriage distressing, it features heavily in this book.
HEA? Yes Cheating? No ...though not for the lack of trying by a particularly obnoxious woman.

I loved being back with Kate & Ryke. It was really intriguing to see what happened after their happily ever after. This instalment was much more emotional than the first. Rothert combines the hot & steamy that we’ve come to know and love her for along with heartbreak and intense emotions. There was a lot more sweet infused among the spice in this one. Her vivid descriptions bring everything to life in an exquisite way.
I quite enjoyed the way that we got to know Kate and Ryke better in this one. They grow as individuals and as a couple. I must say, however, that Kate got on my nerves more than once. I loved seeing more of Luke as well. Rothert really takes the time to develop her supporting cast in this one. It gives a greater depth to the story as a whole.
As a whole, this was a well written, emotional tale that held my heart. It was a quick, enjoyable read that followed up from the first in the series quite nicely. I’d definitely recommend it to others and I definitely can’t wait to read Luke’s story in the 3rd story.
Please note that I received this novel free of charge from the author in exchange for an honest review.
3.5 stars A sequel to the first book, where we read what happens after the HEA. To be honest I loved Ryke as always but the heroine really frustrated me, even though her fears were founded but in the process she did shut out the man she loved. I really felt that the hero loved her more. This wasn't so much as a marriage in trouble story but about a heroine who struggled to have a child.
Captive by Brenda Rothert was book two in the Fire on Ice series. It was also the continuation of Jason Ryker (Ryke) and Kate Camden’s story from Bound, book one, and must be read in order. I read it as part of the boxed set, The Complete Fire and Ice series.
Ryke was still a gorgeous, alpha NHL star and Kate was a grief counselor. They had been married about two years as the book began. Rothert took us through an emotional time period in Ryke and Kate’s life where they were working on starting a family. No spoilers so no elaboration, but Kate’s previous loss was an obstacle for her and a big part of this book.
It had been awhile (nine months) since I had read Bound, so I was going in fairly blind until I could remember the details of their story. Once I got into it, I quickly remembered that I loved Ryke, but wasn’t a huge fan of Kate. This second go around wasn’t much different; however, I understood that Rothert may have depicted Kate’s attitude, fears and grief realistically. I still wasn’t a fan, but it did put it into perspective.
All in all, it was well written and took us full circle. I’m looking forward to leaving Ryke and Kate and reading other stories involving some of Ryke’s team mates. Luke is up next in Edge.
Phew. Where to start? Slight spoilers ahead. So I read Bound and it was hard for me as I lost a baby at 31 weeks last year. I knew exactly how Kate was feeling. Then I picked up this book and I kind of freaked out when she had a miscarriage at 10 weeks in the first chapter because I just had a miscarriage at 9 weeks. I had to put the book down and take a deep breath. I mean, did this author write about my life (sans the hot hockey star husband)?! It was almost too eerie. It was so therapeutic for me to read this book because I knew EXACTLY how Kate was feeling. I was frustrated with her at some points of the book, but I 100% sympathized. I had to call my friend and get spoilers before I could continue because if this book didn't have a HEA, there was no way in hell I could finish it. Thank God it did, and it has kept me optimistic for the future. This was absolutely the most perfect book for me to read at this time in my life. Sometimes a book just speaks to you, and this one was perfect for me. 4.5 stars.
I loved Bound (Fire on Ice #1) but have to say, I was absolutely taken with Captive. This was one for the heart and my heart felt every single moment. I couldn’t move until I finished it. I cried, my heart hurt, the chemistry was sizzling, my emotions were tested and I swooned over Jason Ryker to the ninth degree. Wow! What a guy! Hot Pro Hockey player, devoted, caring, attentive and deeply passionate husband…this guy won me over completely!
“I love you, Kate” “You fill up my heart and make me whole.”
Captive picks up from Bound and takes us, via dual pov’s into some trying and painful moments of Kate and Ryke’s marriage. These two have certainly had their ups and downs and you wonder how much more tragedy they can sustain. These two share a love so soul deep you can feel its intensity and passion on every page. You know, with every fibre of your being, that these two share a deep love and commitment, yet you wonder how far they can be pushed before they crumble.
“It’s hard to see you hurting.” “But seeing you cry rips a hole in my chest.” – Ryke
As Ryke fulfils his Hockey commitments on the road and Kate throws herself into her counselling, their life is balanced and happy until tragedy once again strikes them. It was painful, and it broke my heart as I shared Kate and Ryke’s sadness and agony.
Kate’s suffering made me ache. I understood her actions and her need to find herself in her time. I felt for both of them as each was lost and needed to find their way back. Kate is a much stronger character in Captive. I loved seeing the growth of her and the intensity of their love left me breathless.
“You hold the key. And you can keep it in your hand for as long as you need to. But there will come a point where you’re ready to use that key to break out of the jail you’ve put yourself in. Only you can set yourself free.”
Ryke, oh dear lord, this man is just perfection. He completely MELTED my heart and I was a gonner for him. As the strain of their tragedy tests their relationship, you can feel Ryke’s bewilderment and confusion over Kate’s evasiveness and her suffering. You trudge through feelings of hopelessness with him and every painful step taken is experienced throughout. This man, who is so in control of everything in his life, is at a loss and feels complete desolation as Kate begins to pull away from him.
‘I didn’t pray regularly, but I couldn’t help sending a hope skyward that she wouldn’t have her heart broken again. If miracles were possible, I’d do anything to score one for her.”
Without hesitation, Ryke would take away ounce of Kate’s pain if he could and watching her suffer slowly eats at him as he tries to reach out to her. This woman is his life ,his love, his heart.
“You want your wife to be the dreamer while you’re the one who makes them all come true.”
Healing and hope come in all forms and Brenda Rothert wove a beautiful and heartfelt sub story into Captive that became so powerful, so moving and so poignant to the story that my heart leapt with joy. It was pure beauty and it was during these times the power of their love shone through.
“The thing about loving someone this much is…her pain is like a knife to my chest.” – Ryke
As Kate and Ryke’s resolve is tested and we weave our way through their pain and grief, you feel the strength of their bond deepen, theirs is a love that will prevail, you feel it in your bones
Brenda Rothert made my heart ache, she made it hope, she made it swoon and she made me smile. She delivered her story with passion, heat, humour, warmth, sadness and lots of emotion between a couple who shared a soul searing love and whose story snuck its way well and truly into my heart.
ARC provided by author in exchange for an honest review.
The second book in the "Fire On Ice" series finds Ryker and Kate married! But don't worry folks. We get to find out about their life that occurred between books in a series of flashbacks. And some of my favorite moments in this book happened in the flashbacks.
Unfortunately, Ryker and Kate find themselves once again devastated by loss. Grief finds them and threatens to tear apart what they have created together. How will they cope with this loss? How will they keep their marriage strong through all this with Ryker traveling for the NHL?
I have to say that this book is one of the hardest to review. I have written this review 3 times now. Mainly because I don't want to spoil anything for those who haven't read it or for those that haven't read Bound yet.
So I'm going to focus on the characters. One thing that really stands out in this series is that it has great characters. Likeable. Funny. Sweet. And most importantly, believable. I think I would enjoy reading about these characters doing just about anything. And Ryker and Kate are HOT together. Don't tell my husband but I might be into hockey players now. Shhh....
And Ryker's best friend Luke holds a special spot in my heart. Their best bud relationship is priceless. Can't wait for Luke's book.
ok so as soon as I read book #1, I went right to Amazon and bought book #2. I am in such lust with Ryke. he is the perfect book boyfriend. So I ignored my kids today so I could read book 2 in one sitting. (kidding) but I did read the book pretty much in one sitting while trying not to ignore my 3 kids :)
I laughed and cried with these characters. I loved them. I was frustrated at Kate for pushing Ryke away, though I understood what she was going thru. these characters were so real. real life, real problems. it was like Kate was my friend.
of course I may have to read Luke's story. I don't think I can't stay away.... and seriously, when she flew in to surprise Ryke & Luke helped her get the spare key to his hotel room?? talking about how she was his sister Bertha, who has problems with smelly gas? omg hysterical. I loved how their sorry started. ... And I love how it ended. I'm hoping to catch glimpses of them thruought the other books? maybe Luke's?
would recommend books! I may reread them soon myself.
I likes this one a bit better than the first book. Kate was still annoying at times and her reasons for keeping Ryke at arms length on various occasions in the book didn’t make much sense to me.
You're "Bound" to be held "Captive" by this 2nd installment in the "Fire on Ice" series by Brenda Rothert.
Ok, now after the punny icebreaker I can launch into a few thoughts here.
I stumbled upon "Bound" through lucky circumstance and received an ARC of it, so glad I had that opportunity. The thing readers should be aware of, and is a testament to a pleasurable reading experience, often as much as the material itself, is that Brenda Rothert really embraces her reading public/fans/stalkers/fangirls and I'm sure she would welcome fanboys too!
After reading "Bound", I knew there was such rich material for the next story in Kate & Ryke's journey together, plus let's be honest, you have Ryke's best friend, Luke Hudson, just begging for some face time and I now know we will get that in an upcoming book too.
This chapter in the K & R's poignant love story did not disappoint. It it is filled with plenty of laughter, tears, joy and heartache. You will root for them and want to pull your hair out at other times, especially with Kate. She is not selfish, just scared and in spite of the fact she is a grief counselor; she cannot find the strength early on to address her issues. You see the duo take steps forward and backwards, but ultimately you get the HEA.
To dispel any questions for a cliffhanger, NO, there really isn't one but you can see where the plot can easily take off again without leaving you hanging. I thoroughly enjoyed the ride, shed some tears, guffawed a few times and had my heart warmed, wrenched and wrecked too.
Run, don't walk to grab this story. This is a definite one-clickaroo for anyone who enjoys a good love story.
My hat is off to you, Brenda Rothert and thank you for listening to your readers who asked for more. You did not disappoint!
*****5 stars! This book was even better than the first book and what an excellent follow up story. As if I couldn't like Ryke anymore - gosh, I just love this man! He was such an awesome husband and hero. He is without a doubt loyal to a fault and he adores his wife -100%. There is never any doubt. He does get frustrated at times with her, but once you read it you will understand and agree. Kate definitely didn't frustrate me as much in this book as in the last though. She was wonderful and I couldn't imagine being in her shoes but having such a wonderful and caring husband makes it all work. I loved how she grew so much in this book and trusted her husband no matter what. You don't see that a lot in some of these more angsty reads. I adored them and their family and I'm so happy with the ending!!!
Kate and Ryker have been together for 2 years now. And now it's time to take the plunge and start a family. Even though Kate is apprehensive she wants to have a baby. Putting the baby she lost behind her the couple takes a chance.
--SPOILER-- When Kate has another miscarriage can her heart take any more chances. With Kate feeling like she is out of options Ryker and Kate decide to adopt but before they can complete the process Kate is pregnant again. Kate is divistated at having to stop the adoption process and at the fact that she will lose yet another baby.
Kate cuts herself off from the life growing inside her. It is not real until the baby is here and she won't believe it. Ryker hires a very eccentric midwife named Harmony for Kate. Kate is uncertain about Harmony's techniques but goes with the flow knowing that it can't hurt to try the strange ways.
We met a shy, smart, cute and troubled 5 year old named Melody and fall in love with her. Melody has a horrible past and both parents are dead. She witnessed a murder-suicide and her foster mom brings her to Kate for grief counseling. Kate forms an unexpected bound with Melody and Ryker falls for the 5 year olds charms as well.
With baby on the way Ryker and Kate decide to make the family a 4 some as long as the baby is ok at birth. Melody is thrilled to get her forever family and is instantly spoiled.
I like Kate more in this second book. She struggled with her grief and her past but was able to overcome most of the fear she had about the baby she was having. Ryker was sweet as usual and stood by Kate even when he was frustrated and at a loss of what to do for his wife next.
While the first book about Kate and Ryke ended in a happy ever after, this story takes place two years later. They have been married a year and Kate has just found out she is pregnant. It's not really a spoiler to say she miscarries the baby as it happens early in the book. Kate is obviously devasted she has lost another baby. Althouh she's a Counsellor now herself, she still can't pull herself out of the dark hole losing the baby has caused. She loves Ryke but there is a little distance between them since the miscarriage as Kate doesn't want to get pregnant again and won't have sex until she can go back on the pill. This leads to a lot of sexual frustration for Ryke. Kate then realises that she needs to be with Ryke sexually and then there's no stopping them! Whereas book one had very few sex scenes, this book has a lot!
I found Kate a bit annoying in this story. She makes lots of decisions and her and Ryke don't really talk them through. I could understand why she wanted to make some of the decisions she did, but it seemed a bit rash. My criticism of book one was the timeline of the story and that is the same criticism in this book. Sometimes the story doesn't flow well because of the timeline issues. I loved Harmony the Midwife but then she just disappeared until near the end. I loved little Melody and it was predictable where that story was going but it was a sweet little story although I did wonder near the end about all the things Ryke and Melody seemed to take on all at once!
I loved Ryke! He's such a loving husband. I really like his character. There are also more Hockey scenes in this book which I enjoyed. I enjoyed this book as much as the first one. I have downloaded the boxset and am moving on to book 3 now about Luke, Ryke's friend and team mate.
I felt like I had a book 'hangover' after finishing Captive. I thought I'd read just a little bit of this story before I went to bed and stayed glued to the pages until after 2am. I loved Captive and found it impossible to put down. Captive is a beautiful story and I am certain it will be one of my favourites for 2014.
Kate and Ryke's story starts in book 1 of this series, Bound. They meet at a grief support group and love blossoms between them as they work through their grief, Kate for her stillborn child and Ryke for his late wife. The beginning of Captive sees them married and Kate's apprehension as she falls pregnant with their child. I don't want to give away any spoilers but I will say that life takes the rough road for them.
So many books I read these days are about working through a relationship until we get to the HEA conclusion and, if we are lucky, we get a short Epilogue that tells us about a wedding/babies in their future together. It was really refreshing to read about a married couple and the obstacles they face in the early stages of marriage. I thought that Ryke and Kate's relationship was very realistic.
I highlighted quite a few passages that struck a chord with me, and this is a highlight that I shortened…Ryke asks Kate to ask him what he needs from her.
"Ryke, what do you need from me?" "I need you to have faith." "I have all the faith in the world in you!" she countered, lowering her brows with dismay. "Not faith in me," I said. "In you."
After finishing Bound, the emotional first book by Brenda Rothert which told the story Ryke and Katie, it was a no brainer that I would read this one as soon as I could. Ryke and Katie had met in a grief support group and fallen deeply in love in the first book.
If the first book was about overcoming grief, this one is about overcoming fear, at least on Katie's side. The book takes place a couple of years after the first book and Katie and Ryke are still passionately in love. But the pain of loss hasn't finished with them yet. I don't want to tell too much of the story at the risk of spoilers so I'll focus more on the characters.
I fell even deeper in love with Ryke in this book. He is truly a wonderful hero. Like the first book, this is told in first person with it alternating between Ryke and Katie. In the professional area of his life, his hockey career, things couldn't be better, but his marriage isn't doing quite as well. This isn't a marriage in trouble story, far from it. He is still completely gone for Katie.
I had more issues with Katie. I was impatient with her at times during the story and wanted to smack her, not a good thing to want to do. I thought she made decisions too soon and they were the wrong ones. And here she has this incredible guy willing to die for her and I think she lost sight of that a few times over the course of the book.
This kept me from giving it five stars like I did, Bound, but it is still a very good story and still gets thumbs up, maybe just quite as enthusiastically as the first book.
OMG -- I cannot even begin to tell you how much I loved this book!!! If you haven't read Bound first, you need to. I was lucky to be a beta reader for this book. I was constantly telling Brenda to write faster so that I could read more. What an amazing story!!! She told me that she wanted to make the sex scenes even hotter than Bound. WELL SHE DID THAT AND THEN SOME!! Holy Crap!! This book is sooo hot and steamy!! There wasn't anything that I didn't love about it. Ryke may just be the perfect fan. He's patient, heart of gold, loves with his whole heart, doesn't cheat/falter, and treats Kate like a princess.....oh and did I mention that he's a HOT as HELL HOCKEY PLAYER?!?!? I wanna be Kate in my next life!!! Lucky girl!!!
This story has emotion (sobbed many times)and will pull at your heart strings! This also has some funny parts and like I mentioned.....many steamy parts!! I am so glad Brenda decided to make this a series!!! and I soooo cannot wait for Luke's story next!!! I love him!!!
SO GO NOW AND ONE-CLICK! YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!!! But Please read Bound first!!
Another amazing book from Brenda! I normally read books and on to the next one, but these stories deserve for readers to comment. I felt so many emotions reading Kate and Rykes story. What I love the most about Captive, is the way the author stresses the importance of a marriage: family, sex, and honesty. Kate and Ryke overcome so much loss and some how find a balance. I will continue reading Brenda's books because they are so REAL! Of course, I love the knight in shining armour billion books... I won't deny that, but lets be realistic! And that's exactly what these books bring to the table, my husband smells like sweat and wood every night when he gets home. I think after reading that other women appreciate that woodsy smell as much as I do is humbling. Thank you to the author again for making me hang to the edge of my seat, cuss under my breath, giggle to myself, and she'd happy tears!
When I started reading Bound I had no idea that the story was to be continued in this book. There was a lot of pushing away in Bound by Kate and to be honest it irritated me a little. She was a little better in this book, but only marginally and it was Ryke that saved the book for me. He's a total 5 star hero. His patience, tenacity, strength, caring and love for Kate was beyond amazing. He too suffered not one loss, but two yet Kate - a grief counsellor - made it all about her. I'm not liking that so much. He deserved so much more.
That said, I am really enjoying BR's writing, it flows really well. It's not often an author that writes in the 1st POV can suck me in, BR certainly has and does it well.
**Thank you Brenda for sending me the ARC of this book!!** After finish reading book one I was content with the ending. No cliffhangers but I of course didn't mind reading more of Ryke and Kate. I am so glad that Brenda gave me more... gave us all more of that sweet couple. Captive, continues the story of Ryke and Kate... I didn't expect the story to take me where it did. It seems like Kate had her ups and downs and as strong as she wanted to be, there was always that little bit of her that was weak. Ryke like always was there for her. I LOVE RYKE!!!! This book is amazing.... go get your copy and read.
I loved this book from the first page to the very end!! This couples love is amazing. Brenda writes about real life hardships that happen to couples who have miscarriages and adoptions. I didn't think I could love Ryker anymore than I did in the first book but I was wrong. This mans love for his wife is amazing and makes you fall in love with him more and more with each page read. Tragedy strikes and miracles happen several times in this book and leaves you wanting more!! The epilogue leaves you with the best feeling so make sure to read it as well. Can't wait for the next book "the edge" out in March which is Luke's (Rykers best friend) book. Great job Brenda
After Bound, just like many others, I had to ask Brenda for more Ryke and Kate...their story could not be finished. Well, Brenda, you sure did deliver! I LOVED this book. The male POV with Ryke is just so perfect, he is the absolute athlete, and definitely all MAN (some of his phrases are just so crude but so believable)and yet, an absolute sweetheart with Kate, the woman he loves.
"I love the way you love me."
I got my Ryke fix - thanks, although, I am already going through withdrawal!
This story was the perfect mix of angst/turmoil, love, friendship, trust and sex. LOVED EVERY WORD.
