Overall, Book of Kayal was a good read with a different plot than I typically read. It took be a bit to get into the story, but once I did, I was eager to figure out what happened to our characters.
I did not expect Ganis to be a female warrior, and was pleasantly surprised with her talent and skill. She is a unique protagonist than other female warriors I have read before.
The story line is intriguing and unique. S. Nileson built this world and the characters well. The book was full of detailed history and conflict.
If you enjoy Epic fiction, I would recommend you give Book of Kayal: Strength of Unity a try! :)

Fun, immersive fantasy novel written in the traditional style. There are a lot of neologisms right off the bat, which can be intimidating for some readers, but don't let that deter you from a great read.

I read the first few pages of this before giving up. The writing is stiff and you get no sense of feeling or place from it. The author was obviously told at some point "don't use said"--everyone is suggesting or declaring or sure of their point, but they never say anything.

A friend recommended that I read this book. As soon as I finished I came to look for the next book and was amazed to see that this was a first novel. I would have never guessed! The book was so rich and fully realized. The fight scenes were incredibly detailed...and intense! There is a lot of subtle humor in here too. You definitely feel like you are inhabiting the world that he has created. Extra stars too for lots of powerful female characters. :)

An enjoyable read, some interesting takes. It didn't seem to flow well, but that could just be me.
