This is a fun story loosely based on 'The Princess and the Pea', but with a twist. An ugly old king wants to marry the princess, but has to be sure she's a real princess first. Meanwhile, the princess sabotages his plans because she has no intention of marrying the old coot. When a pea under a pile of mattresses fails to disrupt the princess's sleep, the king's servants try a range of things all starting with the letter P.
The story and illustrations are fun, though the 8-year-old I was reading it with was concerned that the porcupines were getting squashed. I was more concerned that a pirate and a painter were tucked under the princess's bed, but that's another story!
It's set out for early readers and has a couple of bonus puzzles at the end that relate to the story and help check comprehension. I'll definitely be looking for more in this series (Hopscotch Twisty Tales).

In which a real princess devises a clever plan so she does NOT have to marry the king.

A twist on the original fairy tale - this time the princess is trying to make people believe she's not a real princess so she can avoid an arranged marriage with an old, crotchety king. Clever and fun with lots of things starting with the letter P. It's in an early reader format with a spread of questions/activities to consider at the end. A solid offering as a group read aloud as well.

In an attempt to avoid an arranged marriage with a gross and grumpy old king, a princess tricks the famous "true princess test" by pretending not to feel the bag of frozen peas pushed under her mattress as she sleeps. The king is determined, though, and instructs his servants to continue the test. They resort to trying other "P's," like a panda and a painter, before giving up and deciding the girl must not be a princess after all. Free from the king's odious attention, the princess rejoices - by finally getting some sleep on her stack of lumpless mattresses.

A fun, alternative version of the fairy tale - except this time, the princess takes her destiny into her own hands by deciding not to marry the king and staying stubbornly asleep regardless of what they put under her bed!
