A car trip provides the opportunity to see things for every letter of the alphabet from "ambulance" to "zoom." Detailed, humorous illustrations take the reader from the city to the countryside.
Naomi Howland is an American children's book author and illustrator. Raised in Englewood, New Jersey, she was educated at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Her first book, ABCDrive!, began as an illustration assignment at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. In addition to her own books, Howland has illustrated a number of picture-books written by other authors.
Great for students to learn about different signs and areas through traffic. A letter of the alphabet represents each item someone would see during a drive.
Lots to look at in these colorful pages! This simple ABC was very engaging and had even my 9-year-old asking questions about vehicles and rules of the road!
Theme(s): ABC’s Opening line/sentence: A ambulance B bus
Brief book summary: A car trip lets you see things for every letter.
Professional Recommendation/Review #1: Share this book with your toddlers or preschoolers and the next time you are in the car you'll find them observing much more of their surroundings. The detailed pictures are perfect starting points for creating imaginative stories. The many road signs pictured can help children begin to understand symbols and their meaning.
Professional Recommendation/Review #2: Wheels are the exciting action in this alphabet book. A boy on a car trip with his mother and his dog discovers a whole world of vehicles and driving, from Ambulance and Bus to Headlights and Keys, until they reach the Yield sign and Zoom home. For each letter, one clear image is the focus on each page, and the word is spelled out, but the more you look, the more you see in the busy streets. The detailed, lively scenes in acrylics and colored pencil are set in the San Francisco area and show a rich diversity of people, objects, vehicles, and actions that kids can identify. For example, the illustration for Bus includes buildings, a ballet poster, a baby, a bearded man, a boy reading a book, a girl with a teddy bear, etc. Then there are the less concrete words like both (for twins) and boarding (the bus). The busy streets are full of stories.
Response to Two Professional Reviews: I liked the first professional response. That is a great idea to take this book on a road trip and see how many things can be spotted. This way children can learn the alphabet and things that start with that letter.
Evaluation of Literary Elements: This book is designed for young readers who are learning the alphabet. The book has only the letter, a word that goes with that letter and a picture. The pictures are also very appealing to young readers. I’d love to read this book to young children learning the alphabet.
Consideration of Instruction Application: I think a great activity for this book would be to have the children come up with other things they may find on a road trip. This can get them thinking of things they may see. It can also help them think of letters and what letters certain words start with. Another thing that could be done is send them on a little scavenger hunt around the room and find things that starts with whatever letter they are given.
Howland, Naomi. ABCDrive! (New York; Clarion Books, 1994) ABCDrive is an excellent book for those children that love cars and trucks. Not only does this book give the reader an insight to transportation vehicles, but also a view of the city of San Francisco. This could also be a good book for a unit on communities. ABCDrive goes through the alphabet pointing out vehicles and transportation related items like garbage trucks and no parking signs. The illustrations done, with acrylics and colored pencils, by Howland are colorful and detailed. (ages 3-7)
