The ABCs of Homeschooling

Rate this book
The mothers in her children's play group all attended the same church, had similar interests, and held the same beliefs. Yet when the topic of schooling came up, they had differing ideas that always divided them: Vicki Caruana was the only one choosing to send her children to public school. Vicki now homeschools--the choice that was furthest from her mind all those years ago--and she writes this book not to convince you that there is only one way to educate a child, but to share with you the stories of why various families have chosen to homeschool. While describing the life of a homeschooling family, she helps you discover your own assumptions about education and enables you to decide what method of schooling best matches the needs of your children. If you're struggling with the education choice, this book can help. If you've already decided, this book can confirm--or challenge--your decision. In either case, take the time to read and ponder the possibilities. Your children are worth it.

This was a good overview of some things that are important to know when preparing to homeschool. Vicki Caruana gave some good Biblical reasons why we, as Christian parents, need to be overseeing our children's schooling. This doesn't necessarily mean she that all Christians should homeschool their children, but we are responsible for teaching our children God's word and for some of us the best way to do this may be to teach our children at home. There were parts that were a little redundant or just weren't applicable to me that I skipped. It would also be wise to note that this book was published in 2001 so there are technological advancements that affect homeschooling today.

The rather bland title does little to warn the reader that this book has a strong religious bent. Apparently the author is not just a home educator but also a spokesperson for God, who has entrusted her with some messages to relay to the rest of us. Like "God sees learning as a way to become a strong testimony for Him." And "As a representative of heaven, you have the distinct responsibility to protect to God's reputation and to point others in His direction."

I was looking for more practical sorts of advice.
