In this fantastic story, Faulkner keeps the reader in darkness until the very last word of the text. We get to witness the life of a respectable old lady who one day dies as everyone else, and when she is buried, people get to enter to her house, which they didn't know, and once inside, they get to know her little secrets, that she kept so private during all her respectable life. A very beautiful story with a grotesque but very well tasted twist (if those two adjectives can ever go together, it is Faulkner who can do it)
This is the kind of reading I like. Great characters, with little going on, apparently. But, at the same time, while time goes through the story, a whole universe changes. Half of a country is dying, decaying, disappearing; and social relationships transforming towards equalitu and freedom. All this turmoil is underlying the apparently disgusting life of a ghostlike and dislikeable creature. A Rose for Emily is a goodbye for aristocracy and segregation. Skilfully written, a beautiful text.
