Chieko, and Other Poems of Takamura Kotaro

Takamura Kotaro (March 13, 1883 - April 2, 1956) was a Japanese poet and sculptor. He graduated from the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1902, where he studied sculpture. He studied in New York in 1906, London in 1907, and in Paris in 1908. He returned to Japan in 1909, where he lived for the remainder of his life.
His sculptural work shows strong influence both from Western work, especially Auguste Rodin, and from Japanese traditions. His father, Takamura K?un, was also a noted Japanese sculptor.
Takamura Kotaro is famous for his poems, and especially for his collection Chiekosho (Chieko's sky) (1941), a collection of poems about his wife Chieko Takamura, who died in 1938. Like her husband, Chieko was an artist and poet.
Takamura Kotaro began by writing haiku and tanka, but what makes him stand out as a poet is his shi. The first two are traditional verse forms with a long history in Japanese literature; the last is a new form developed during Takamura's lifetime by him and other poets under the Western influence.
