I ordered this book after I read through the second volume and this is just as insightful and memorable as the other. Reading through stories of nisei soldiers who fought in Europe, were sent to various locations in the Pacific theater, and others who remained in Hawai`i and did their duty on the home front, made me so proud to be from Hawai`i and to be yonsei--fourth generation Japanese-American.
The stories from several Japanese-American Military Intelligence Service soldiers were some of the most interesting to read through. Many were translators and interpreters, extending their service years after the war ended, translating and interrogating Japanese soldiers and spies. Their involvement in WWII wasn't known until several decades after the war was over, but their contribution undoubtedly aided in the war's ending. For some, this is the first time they've sat down and shared their stories with anyone since then. It's amazing, the things they've remembered, and how their involvement in the war changed their lives.
My grandpa was a soldier in the 442nd Combat Regimental Team that fought in Europe. I never got to talk to him about his experience before he passed because I was too young. But knowing him, like many others of that generation, I don't know if he would've shared his stories even if I was able to ask. Many didn't speak of their part in the war, so I'm so thankful to the men who shared their stories in this book. They sacrificed so much and shaped the Hawai`i I was born into and love.
