Excellent account of the airborne arm of the German army
This is an interesting account of an elite group, that fought with disctintion, during all the war, names like My. Cassino, the rápido river, the Ly Ian Campaign, the Hedgegrow battle as well create an atmosphere of elite and it talks about the professionalism and the elan of such units, always well lead and with great morale and combat spirit. Great read, the photographs are great, truly recommended.
The main strength of the Images of War has always been the photographs, not the accompanying text. Sadly Ailsby tries to give reader a history of German airborne force with end result being that constraints of the book limit how much can be told which in turn eats into how many photos can be included. Thicker books have been written about individual operations (Netherlands, Belgium, Crete, Cassino....) so end result is only very broad and very shallow look.
Still, looking beyond this the photos are excellent and there are plenty of them. Take the book for its pictorial and reference value and read something else for the history.
