I am a Mother, Nana amd military brat who fell in love with books at an early age. I worked as a youth worker for a number of years so being around kids all my life gave me so much inspiration. Many of my silly stories are based on real life experiences.
This book is just so sweet - The language is simple and aided very clearly with illustrations so can work for children who are learning to read at Reception age. It teaches compassion and understanding for the older members of the family and is also useful for teaching about age for scientific/PSHE topics such as that.
A easy and fun read that will have you smiling and seeing old age in a new way. An easy read for all ages and with great illustrations to keep them interested as they puzzle out the words.

This book is an ode to a non-gumpy grandpa. It is written in rhyme and delivered by an adorable, blonde, ponytailed lassie. She tries to convince all the readers that no, her grandpa isn't really grumpy, he just has a lot to contend with in his life.
She sites happenings like finding his teeth in the toilet bowl, discovering his favourite t-shirt is now obsolete, how embarrassed he feels when he not only needs a hair cut but has to have his eyebrows and ears (and probably his nose hairs too) trimmed ... all contributing factors to him looking and feeling his age. All day long he faces challenges that in his early years would not have bothered him one tiny bit. Her grandpa is surrounded by his faithful, cuddly dog that puts up with his idiosyncrasies, and his grandchildren who can be bothersome at times. Somehow this intelligent little girl has figured out that he is not grumpy at all but only appears that way. She concludes that he acts that way because he has worked for a such a long, long time and he needs his rest.
She is elated when she and grandpa hang out together and he tells her stories of days gone by and they bond over ice cream, bike rides, fishing excursions and movie sharing, just to name a few. Do you know what she loves best to do with her Grandpa? Well I don't want to spoil it for you so you had best get a copy of the book and find out. She knows that she is blessed to have a grandpa so loving and one that wants to spend time doing all sorts of things with her.
The illustrations are colourful, expressive and engaging. They make you wish you had a grandpa just like this lucky wee girl. Their facial expressions say it all towards each other.
Everyone grows old, every one has stories buried deep inside of them to tell and to share. May the young children of the next generation be as wise as this little girl and tune into their grandparents, listen to their stories, and realize what a gift they are to their family. Grandparents need to be acknowledged, respected and treasured.
I loved the intro:
"You don't quit laughing Because you grow old, You grow old because You stop laughing." (Amen.)
I have mixed emotions about this story. Narrated in first person by a little girl, the story is divided into two parts. In the first half, our little narrator presents rhymes of four lines per page with some of the reasons her grandpa might be cranky. While the illustrations are adorable and funny, some parents may feel they are too graphic especially for very young children. For example, losing his teeth in the toilet bowl and falling asleep because it is too difficult to cut his long toenails. The second part of this story relates how the little girl has so many reasons to appreciate her grandpa like how he supports her emotionally, spends time with her, and has unlimited patience. Her conclusion is that he is not grumpy, but just getting old.
The book is targeted for readers ages two through eight. Toddlers and preschoolers won't understand the underlying message. While children might find the situations and illustrations funny, some of the topics chosen are a bit weird. Parents and teachers definitely need to preview the whole book before reading.
This book is so darn funny! I could barely read it to my nephew tonight during our nightly before bed story as I kept giggling at all of the things about grandpa. My nephew says his grandpa isn't grumpy, either!
I wasn’t a fan of this one, and neither was my 4-year-old. I didn’t realise until after we’d downloaded this that we had read 2 books previously by this author and didn’t like them, if I had realised before, we probably wouldn’t have read this.
This book has bright pictures, and the story is told in verse. The story is very repetitive though, fairly long, and a lot of it was just silly. Why would Grandpa’s false teeth be in the toilet? Would he really end up head-first in the toilet just because the seat was left up? And why wouldn’t he just use the toilet whilst Grandma is in the shower? I’m pretty darn sure that he’s seen her naked enough to not bother! This book just didn’t amuse us, and we will definitely not be buying a copy. 4 out of 10
A very fun story to read and share. The rhymes are both funny and true. Grandpas should find it hilarious while the kids enjoy the silliness of it all. Probably be trying to come up with their own rhymes afterwards. Definitely a five stars book.
Unlike other books, each chapter was fun and was presented in a specialized way to teach and ensure the reader knows what steps to take when you're a Grandpa and you're in the presence of your next of kins who are little ones.... Excellent read.

A lovely little girl explains getting old is something we're all going to do and maybe we should try to understand the trials of growing old --- only have love for her grandpa and how wonderful he is to her!
